Amazon’s announced Kids Tablet 8 and Kids Tablet 11 are a new product line, reported as Android-based, but their release dates are still in the future as of October 11, 2026. They are not the same devices as Amazon’s existing Fire Kids tablets, which Amazon’s September 2026 guide still lists. The new models’ exact Android version and app-store compatibility have not been specified in Amazon’s posted Kids Tablet 8 specifications.
Are Amazon Kids tablets Android now?
Not all of them. October 2026 reporting describes the newly announced Amazon Kids Tablet 8 and Kids Tablet 11 as Android-based successors or rebrandings. That is a reported platform shift, not confirmation that the existing Fire Kids family has changed operating systems. Amazon’s September 2026 guide continues to list Fire 7 Kids, Fire HD 8 Kids, Fire HD 10 Kids, Fire HD 8 Kids Pro and Fire HD 10 Kids Pro. Amazon’s Kids Tablet 8 specification table leaves both its Android version/API level and OS version as “n/a”; it does not establish a specific Android release, Google Play availability or compatibility with particular apps. Tom’s Guide’s October 8 report is the source for the Android-based description.
What changed in Amazon’s 2026 kids tablets?
A separate Kids Tablet line was announced
The Kids Tablet 8 and 11 are distinct from the Fire Kids models still listed in Amazon’s buying guide. The name change can make the products sound like refreshed Fire tablets, but the available specifications and reporting do not justify treating them as the same lineup.
The Kids Tablet 8 has its own published hardware specifications
Amazon lists the 2026 Kids Tablet 8 with an 8.7-inch, 1340 × 800 IPS display, 4GB LPDDR5 RAM, 64GB or 128GB storage, Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3. Its specification page does not identify an Android version or OS version. Amazon Developer’s specification table

The Fire HD 8 also received a separate refresh
Amazon separately announced a 50% RAM increase for the Fire HD 8 lineup, including its Kids and Kids Pro editions. That is a change to the Fire HD 8 family, not evidence that the new Kids Tablet 8 is a Fire HD 8. For reference, Amazon’s specifications for the Fire HD 8 (2024, 12th Gen) list Fire OS 8, Android 11/API 30, 3GB or 4GB RAM, 32GB or 64GB storage and microSD expansion up to 1TB. Those are specifications for the 2024 Fire HD 8 only, not the 2026 Kids Tablet 8. Amazon’s Fire HD 8 (2024) specifications
How much are the new Amazon Kids tablets?
Tom’s Guide reported starting prices of $229.99 for the Kids Tablet 8 and $329.99 for the Kids Tablet 11. These are reported launch prices, not guaranteed live checkout prices; regional pricing and configurations may differ. Its October 8, 2026 report said sales were expected to begin October 14 in the United States, Mexico and Canada, and October 19 in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy and Spain. Those dates had not arrived as of October 11. Tom’s Guide, October 8, 2026

Amazon describes Fire HD 8 Kids and Fire HD 8 Kids Pro as 8-inch-class options. The model names therefore require care: Fire HD 8 Kids Pro is an existing Fire tablet, while Kids Tablet 8 is the separate 2026 product. Amazon Kids guide
What does Amazon say about security updates?
Amazon’s policy says qualifying Fire tablets receive security updates for at least four years after purchase new from Amazon as seller on Amazon.com, or until a later model-specific date listed by Amazon. The policy page lists December 31, 2029 for Fire HD 8 Kids (2024) and Fire HD 10 Kids/Pro (2023). It also notes technical limitations and does not guarantee a device’s lifetime. Those legacy-model dates do not establish an update deadline for the 2026 Kids Tablet 8. Amazon Fire Tablet Device Software Security Updates
