Choose the Google TV Streamer if you want a set-top box, built-in gigabit Ethernet, 32 GB of storage, and Google Home, Matter, or Thread features. Choose the Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Gen, 2023) if you prefer a compact HDMI stick, have a Wi-Fi 6E network, and use Alexa and Fire TV. Both list 4K HDR, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, HDR10+, and HLG support, so the deciding factors are installation, networking, storage, ecosystem, and the price you can actually find locally.

At a glance

This is a feature-match decision rather than a proven speed contest. Neither manufacturer’s specification page establishes a real-world performance winner, and no comparable hands-on testing or current cross-market price survey is available. Amazon’s product is specifically the Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Gen), released in 2023; the Google product is the current Google TV Streamer (4K).

Picture and sound: both cover the major 4K formats

Both products list 4K HDR output, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, HDR10+, and HLG capability. Google specifies output of up to 4K HDR at 60 frames per second. Amazon’s specification identifies 4K Ultra HD support but does not establish a comparative frame-rate advantage.

Google TV Streamer 4K - Fast Streaming Entertainment on Your Device with Voice Search Remote - Watch Movies, Shows, Live, and Netflix in HDR - Smart Home Control - 32 GB of Storage - Hazel
  • The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
  • HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
  • See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
  • Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
  • Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound

A format appearing on a device’s specification does not guarantee that you will see it. The television must support the format, the sound system must decode the selected audio track, the streaming app must implement it on that device, your subscription must include the relevant quality tier, and the particular film or episode must be encoded in it. A title mastered in HDR10, for example, will not become Dolby Vision simply because the streamer supports Dolby Vision.

What this means for a typical 4K television

  • Either device can be a sensible choice for 4K HDR streaming when your television and services support the same formats.
  • Dolby Vision support is listed on both, but app-by-app availability still controls what plays.
  • Dolby Atmos is also listed by both; an Atmos-capable television, receiver, or soundbar and an Atmos-encoded title are required for Atmos playback.
  • Do not use the shared format list as evidence that menus, advertising, app selection, or playback quality will be identical.

Network choice: Wi-Fi 6E versus built-in gigabit Ethernet

Fire TV Stick 4K Max: newer Wi-Fi, adapter-based Ethernet

The 2nd-generation Max supports Wi-Fi 6E across 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz bands. Wi-Fi 6E can provide a less-congested 6 GHz option when you have a compatible router, the stick is within suitable range, and local regulations and router settings permit its use. A Wi-Fi 6E label alone does not guarantee higher throughput through walls or at long distance.

Amazon lists Ethernet support at 10/100 Mbps through an external dongle. That means wired networking is possible, but it adds an accessory, a cable, and another connection near the television. The cited specification does not make the stick’s Ethernet path a gigabit connection.

Google TV Streamer: older Wi-Fi standard, faster built-in wired option

Google lists Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) at 2.4 and 5 GHz, plus an Ethernet port rated up to 10/100/1000 Mbps. The integrated port is the cleaner choice if your router or network switch is near the television and you want a cable that avoids wireless interference. “Up to” 1000 Mbps is a port rating, not a promise that your internet plan, switch, cable, or streaming service will deliver that speed.

Which network design fits your home?

  • Pick the Fire TV Stick’s wireless approach when your router supports Wi-Fi 6E, the television is in a good wireless location, and keeping the hardware small matters more than a wired connection.
  • Pick the Google box when the television is near a router or switch, you need dependable wired connectivity, or you do not own a Wi-Fi 6E router.
  • Use the Fire TV Ethernet dongle only if its 10/100 limitation and extra hardware suit your installation; it is not equivalent to the Google device’s built-in gigabit port.

Storage and memory: Google gives you more listed headroom

Fire TV Stick 4K Max: 16 GB

Amazon lists 16 GB of storage for the 2023 second-generation Max. That is the figure to use when identifying this model; do not substitute storage numbers from the first-generation Max or from later Fire TV products. Amazon’s cited specification does not state a memory capacity, so a direct RAM comparison is not established.

Google TV Streamer: 32 GB storage and 4 GB memory

Google lists 32 GB of storage and 4 GB of memory. The extra listed storage gives more room for installed apps and local app data, although usable space is lower than the headline capacity because the operating system and preinstalled software occupy part of it.

More storage and a published memory number describe capacity, not measured interface speed. They do not prove that the Google device opens every app faster or that the Fire TV Stick will perform poorly. Choose the Google model for the additional capacity itself, not for an unsupported benchmark claim.

Physical design and installation

Installing the Fire TV Stick 4K Max

  1. Confirm that the package is labeled Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Gen) and identifies the 2023 model.
  2. Plug the stick into an available HDMI input on the television. Its stick form factor is useful when you want the player hidden behind the display or have limited shelf space.
  3. Connect its included power equipment as directed by the package, then select the television’s matching HDMI input.
  4. Follow the on-screen Fire TV setup prompts, connect to your Wi-Fi network, and sign in to the requested Amazon account.
  5. Install the streaming apps you use and test a known 4K HDR title. If you choose wired networking, add the applicable Ethernet dongle and cable rather than assuming the stick has an integrated port.

Amazon also describes this model as its most powerful streaming stick with Wi-Fi 6E and Ambient Experience. That is Amazon’s product description, not an independent benchmark.

Installing the Google TV Streamer

  1. Place the box where it has ventilation and access to your television and network equipment.
  2. Connect it to an HDMI input with a certified HDMI 2.1 cable. Google says the cable is required and sold separately, so check that you have one before installation.
  3. Connect power, select the correct HDMI input, and complete the on-screen Google TV setup.
  4. Join Wi-Fi, or connect Ethernet directly to the built-in port if your router or switch is nearby.
  5. Sign in, install your services, and test 4K HDR playback. Pair the remote and configure its customizable button if you want a shortcut to a preferred function or app.

The box needs more visible space and an extra cable than a stick, but it avoids the dangling adapter arrangement that wired networking can require on the Fire TV model.

Remote, operating system, and smart-home ecosystem

Why choose Fire TV and Alexa

Fire OS 8 and the Fire TV interface are the natural fit for a household already using Alexa devices and Amazon’s television ecosystem. Alexa voice control can be the deciding convenience if you want your streaming player to participate in the same assistant routines and device controls. The stick format also minimizes the visual footprint.

Ambient Experience is listed for this Max model. Treat it as an ecosystem feature rather than evidence of faster streaming, lower latency, or better picture quality.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why choose Google TV and Google Home

The Google TV Streamer runs Android TV OS and adds features aimed at a Google Home-equipped household. Google lists a customizable remote button, Find My Remote, Google Home and Matter hub functions, and a Thread border router. Matter support can help the box act as a home-control hub, while Thread border-router capability is relevant to compatible low-power smart-home devices.

  • One place for all your favorite streaming apps. TiVo Stream 4K includes Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, Peacock plus many more, so you can get to your shows fast.
  • TiVo Stream 4K is one of Time Magazine’s “2020 Best Inventions, Special Mention” and PCMag hails it as “an excellent media streamer for TV lovers.” Operating Temperature 0˚C - 40˚C

Those capabilities matter only if you use, or plan to use, compatible Google Home, Matter, or Thread equipment. They should not be treated as universal advantages for someone who simply wants to open a streaming app.

Remote differences that can affect daily use

  • Choose the Fire TV remote experience when Alexa and Fire TV conventions are already familiar in your home.
  • Choose Google’s remote when a customizable button and Find My Remote solve a real household annoyance.
  • Neither listed specification establishes which interface has fewer advertisements, the better recommendations, or faster navigation. Those are software experiences that can change over time and should not be inferred from hardware numbers.

Which device should you buy?

Buy the Google TV Streamer when these priorities dominate

  • You want a box rather than a device hanging from the television’s HDMI port.
  • You can run Ethernet and want a built-in connection rated up to 10/100/1000 Mbps.
  • You want 32 GB of listed storage and 4 GB of listed memory.
  • Your smart home uses Google Home, Matter, or Thread, and a border-router or hub function is useful.
  • You prefer Google TV and its remote features, including Find My Remote and a customizable button.

Buy the Fire TV Stick 4K Max when these priorities dominate

  • You want the smallest installation and a compact HDMI stick.
  • You have a Wi-Fi 6E router and a location where its 6 GHz capability can be useful.
  • You prefer Alexa and Fire TV integration.
  • You are comfortable using an external Ethernet dongle if wired networking becomes necessary.
  • You specifically want the 2023 second-generation Max and have confirmed that listing, rather than assuming every “4K Max” product has the same specifications.

When both are effectively tied

If your only requirement is access to 4K HDR, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, HDR10+, and HLG where supported, neither specification sheet creates a decisive advantage. Compare the installation shape, network path, storage, remote ecosystem, and the prices available in your country on the day you buy.

Price and value: check the listing you will actually purchase

Google’s comparison page displayed $99.99 for the US Streamer model when it was accessed, but that figure is a listed reference price, not a guaranteed current price, discount, bundle, or price for another country. A comparable current Fire TV Stick 4K Max price was not established here.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before deciding on value, verify:

  • the exact model and generation in the product title;
  • whether the listed price is a temporary promotion or recurring price;
  • whether the box includes the accessories you need;
  • the cost of a certified HDMI 2.1 cable for the Google box if you do not already own one;
  • the cost and availability of an Ethernet dongle if you plan to wire the Fire TV Stick; and
  • local taxes, shipping, warranty terms, and stock.

A cheaper listing can cease to be cheaper after adding an HDMI cable, Ethernet hardware, or delivery charges. Conversely, a sale can change the value calculation without changing either device’s capabilities.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Confusing generations of the Fire TV Stick 4K Max

Amazon’s cited product is the second generation from 2023. Check the generation before relying on the 16 GB and Wi-Fi 6E figures. Do not transfer specifications from the first-generation Max or another Fire TV model.

Assuming every app delivers every listed format

Device support is only one part of the playback chain. Confirm the title, app, subscription, television, and audio equipment when Dolby Vision, HDR10+, or Atmos is important to you.

Treating Wi-Fi or Ethernet ratings as streaming-speed guarantees

Wi-Fi 6E describes the Fire TV radio’s capability, while 10/100/1000 Mbps describes the Google Ethernet port’s maximum link rating. Neither number measures your actual internet throughput, wireless signal, congestion, or an app’s delivery rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Forgetting the Google box’s cable requirement

Google says a certified HDMI 2.1 cable is required and sold separately. Include that cable in your setup plan rather than discovering the requirement after opening the device.

Buying for memory numbers alone

The Google device’s 4 GB memory and 32 GB storage are useful capacity figures, but no comparable benchmark is established. They are not proof of superior menu responsiveness or app performance.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Write down whether the television is beside a router or must use Wi-Fi.
  2. If wireless, check whether your router supports 6 GHz Wi-Fi 6E and whether the television’s location receives a useful signal.
  3. If wired, compare the Fire TV dongle’s 10/100 Mbps path with Google’s built-in up-to-1,000 Mbps port and account for accessory costs.
  4. Choose stick or box based on available space, cable visibility, and whether buying a certified HDMI 2.1 cable is acceptable.
  5. Count your likely installed apps and decide whether 16 GB is sufficient or 32 GB provides worthwhile headroom.
  6. Choose Alexa/Fire TV or Google TV/Home based on the devices and routines already in your household.
  7. Confirm the exact model, current local price, included accessories, and return policy immediately before ordering.
  8. After installation, test one known 4K HDR title and verify that your television and sound system report the format you expect.

Bottom line

The Google TV Streamer (4K) is the better match for a box-style installation, built-in wired networking, more listed storage, and Google Home, Matter, or Thread integration. The Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Gen, 2023) is the better match for a compact stick, Wi-Fi 6E, and Alexa-oriented Fire TV use. Since both list the core 4K HDR, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos capabilities, verify the exact local prices and your existing network and smart-home setup before choosing.
