Choose the Roku Streaming Stick 4K (model 3820) if Dolby Vision matters to you and your television supports it. Choose Amazon’s Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd Gen, 2026) if you prefer Alexa and Amazon integration, or if your network can take advantage of its listed Wi‑Fi 6 support. Neither is universally “faster” or easier: the right choice depends on your TV’s HDR formats, the apps you need on the exact generation, your home-network equipment, and the remote and voice ecosystem you prefer.
There is an important generation mismatch in this comparison. Amazon’s current product specification identifies a third-generation Fire TV Stick 4K released in 2026. Roku’s support documentation identifies the Streaming Stick 4K as model 3820. Retail listings can mix these products with the older Fire TV Stick 4K (2nd Gen, 2023), Fire TV Stick 4K Plus, Fire TV Stick 4K Select, or Roku Streaming Stick Plus. Verify the generation or model number before ordering.
The exact devices being compared
This is not a comparison of every similarly named streaming stick. The Amazon device is the Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd Gen, 2026); the Roku device is the Roku Streaming Stick 4K, model 3820. Amazon’s Device Specifications page was updated September 30, 2026, and Amazon’s Fire TV OS overview lists Vega OS 2.0 for the 2026 stick. Roku’s support page uses model number 3820 for the Streaming Stick 4K.
When checking a listing, look for the full generation or model identifier rather than relying on a search-result headline. A listing that says only “Fire TV Stick 4K” may describe the 2023 second-generation model, while “Roku Streaming Stick” may refer to the Plus model rather than model 3820.

Picture quality: Dolby Vision is the clearest difference
Roku’s listed Dolby Vision support
Roku lists Dolby Vision and HDR10+ for model 3820. If your television has a Dolby Vision mode and you watch titles mastered in that format, the Roku is the safer choice on the specifications available for this comparison. Dolby Vision still requires all three parts of the chain: a compatible Roku player, a compatible television, and a streaming title or source encoded in Dolby Vision.
Fire TV’s listed HDR formats
Amazon’s 2026 specification page lists 4K and HDR10+ for the Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd Gen). Its current HDR row does not list Dolby Vision. That does not make the Fire TV unusable on a Dolby Vision television; it means the published specification does not establish Dolby Vision output for this exact stick. If Dolby Vision is a deciding requirement, do not assume support based on an older Fire TV model or on a retailer’s generic “4K HDR” label.
Your television remains the limiting component
A streaming stick cannot add 4K or HDR capability to a television that lacks it. Roku explicitly says that its player will work with a TV without 4K or HDR, but the viewer will not see 4K or HDR picture quality. The same practical limitation applies to the Fire TV: a 4K stick connected to a 1080p television produces the best format that the TV accepts.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Check the TV manual or manufacturer menu for 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision support.
- Use an HDMI input that supports the TV’s advertised 4K/HDR features; some older sets provide enhanced formats on only one or two ports.
- Confirm that the subscription service and specific title offer the format you want. A compatible player and TV cannot create Dolby Vision or HDR10+ metadata that a title does not contain.
Apps and operating systems: verify the exact generation
Why Fire TV app checking is especially important
Amazon lists Vega OS 2.0 on the 2026 Fire TV Stick 4K. Because this is a newer platform designation, do not assume that an app available on an earlier Fire TV generation is available, current, or identical on this model. Before buying, make a list of must-have services—live television, sports, local news, music, cloud gaming, accessibility tools, and region-specific services—and check each one for the 2026 Fire TV model in your country.
Roku channel availability is also regional
Roku identifies model 3820 as a Roku streaming player and directs users to its Channel Store for services. Channel availability varies by country, account region, app licensing, and sometimes the device or television software. Check the Roku Channel Store for your location rather than relying on a US-only review or an older channel list.

Do not use a previous-generation app list as proof
App catalogs change independently of hardware. A service can be removed, renamed, restricted by region, or released first on one operating system. The practical buying test is simple: verify the exact app on the exact model, in the country where the stick will be used, before you purchase.
Wireless networking and streaming reliability
Fire TV: Wi‑Fi 6 is explicitly listed
Amazon lists Wi‑Fi 6 for the Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd Gen, 2026). Wi‑Fi 6 can be useful when your router supports it and several devices compete for airtime, but the label alone does not guarantee higher streaming quality. Your internet plan, distance from the access point, walls, interference, router configuration, and the streaming service’s available bitrate still determine playback.
Roku: long-range receiver, unspecified generation
Roku describes model 3820 as having a long-range Wi‑Fi receiver. The cited Roku product page does not specify whether it uses Wi‑Fi 5, Wi‑Fi 6, or another generation, so do not infer a wireless standard from the “long-range” wording.
Choose based on your actual network
- If your router supports Wi‑Fi 6 and you want the Fire TV to use that standard, the Amazon specification gives you a clear compatibility point.
- If the stick will sit behind a wall-mounted TV or far from the router, receiver placement and signal quality may matter more than the Wi‑Fi generation. Test the intended HDMI location with a phone or laptop before deciding.
- For either device, place the router or mesh node where it has a clear path to the TV, update its firmware, and avoid hiding the stick behind dense metal or a crowded bundle of cables.
Remote controls and voice ecosystems
Fire TV’s Alexa approach
Amazon describes a redesigned Alexa Voice Remote for the 2026 Fire TV Stick 4K. It is the natural fit for a household already using Alexa devices, Amazon accounts, or Alexa-based smart-home routines. Confirm the exact buttons and included remote in the regional product listing; remote bundles can differ by market.
Roku’s TV controls
Roku’s included Voice Remote provides TV power and volume controls. That can reduce the need to keep a separate television remote for ordinary viewing, provided your TV is compatible with the remote’s control method. Roku’s voice features and channel behavior are tied to your Roku account and regional service availability.

Make the choice by daily tasks
Choose the Fire TV remote if voice requests and Alexa integration are central to how you operate your home. Choose Roku if you value a Roku-centered interface and the supplied remote’s direct TV power and volume controls. Neither choice proves that one interface is objectively easier; ease depends on your habits and the services you use.

Amazon’s specifications list Dolby Atmos support for the Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd Gen) when compatible content and equipment are used. The signal must pass through an Atmos-capable television, soundbar, AV receiver, or other audio chain, and the streaming title must carry an Atmos track.
The cited Roku product page does not establish Dolby Atmos support for model 3820. If Atmos is a purchase requirement, verify Roku’s current model-specific audio specifications and your sound system’s supported formats before selecting it. Do not infer support from a different Roku model or from a retailer’s generic “surround sound” description.
- Connect the stick to an HDMI input that supports the television’s audio pass-through features.
- Set the TV’s digital-audio output to the mode recommended for your soundbar or receiver, such as passthrough or bitstream when applicable.
- Test with a known compatible title and check the receiver or soundbar’s format indicator; a stereo result can indicate a title, app, TV setting, or equipment limitation rather than a faulty stick.
How to set up either streaming stick
Before you begin
- A television with an available HDMI port
- Reliable internet access and the current Wi‑Fi password
- The supplied power adapter and USB power cable, unless your TV manufacturer explicitly provides sufficient USB power
- An account for the chosen platform and accounts for any paid streaming services
- The television remote, needed to select the correct HDMI input and complete some display settings
Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd Gen, 2026)
- Insert the Fire TV Stick into an HDMI port. Use an HDMI extender only if the stick cannot physically fit, neighboring plugs obstruct it, or the wall mount blocks the port; it is not a mandatory accessory for every installation.
- Connect the supplied power cable and adapter. TV USB power can be insufficient or unstable, so use the supplied adapter when possible.
- Select the matching HDMI input on the television.
- Pair the redesigned Alexa Voice Remote when prompted, then connect the stick to your Wi‑Fi network.
- Install system updates and sign in with the account requested by Fire TV.
- Open the app store and verify every must-have service on this exact Vega OS 2.0 device. Install only the apps you intend to use and set parental or purchase controls before handing over the remote.
- Open display and audio settings and confirm the highest modes your television and audio equipment actually support. Do not force a format that causes blank screens or audio dropouts.
Roku Streaming Stick 4K (model 3820)
- Connect the stick to an HDMI port and attach power with the supplied cable and adapter. Use an HDMI extender only when the physical installation requires it.
- Choose the matching HDMI input on the television.
- Pair the Roku Voice Remote, connect to Wi‑Fi, and allow the player to check for software updates.
- Sign in or create a Roku account and set the display type. Let the player detect 4K and HDR capabilities, then review the result rather than assuming every title will use HDR.
- Open the Roku Channel Store and check each required service for your country. Add channels and sign in to the individual services.
- For Dolby Vision, play a known Dolby Vision title and confirm that the television switches to its Dolby Vision picture mode. If it does not, check the TV input setting, cable path, title availability, and account plan.
Which one should you choose?
Choose Roku Streaming Stick 4K model 3820 when…
- Your television supports Dolby Vision and you want the player whose official specification lists it.
- You prefer Roku’s platform and are satisfied that the Roku Channel Store has your required services in your region.
- You want a supplied voice remote with TV power and volume controls.
- Your network needs a receiver described as long-range, and the Roku’s unspecified Wi‑Fi generation is not a concern.
Choose Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd Gen, 2026) when…
- You use Alexa or Amazon services and want that ecosystem integrated with the streaming device.
- Your router supports Wi‑Fi 6 and that specification is meaningful for your home network.
- You need the Amazon-listed Dolby Atmos capability with compatible content and audio equipment.
- You have confirmed that every essential app is available on Vega OS 2.0 for the 2026 model in your country.
Choose neither until you check compatibility when…
- Your must-have service is region-specific or newly released.
- Your television is older, has limited HDMI ports, or lacks 4K/HDR support.
- Your sound system requires a particular Atmos or passthrough format that the product page does not clearly establish.
- The retailer listing does not identify Amazon’s 3rd Gen 2026 model or Roku model 3820.
Common buying and setup mistakes
Buying the wrong generation
Search results often collapse several products into “Fire TV Stick 4K.” Confirm “3rd Gen, 2026” for Amazon. For Roku, confirm “Streaming Stick 4K” and model “3820,” not Streaming Stick Plus.
Expecting every 4K title to be HDR
4K describes resolution; HDR10+, Dolby Vision, and other formats describe HDR presentation. A title, app plan, TV, HDMI path, and player must all support the same format. A 4K title can play without HDR, and an HDR-capable stick cannot upgrade a title that is supplied only in standard dynamic range.

Assuming a speed winner without matching tests
No controlled head-to-head speed test for this exact pairing was identified. A May 10, 2025 Tom’s Guide comparison covered Roku Streaming Stick Plus and an earlier Fire TV Stick 4K, not model 3820 versus the 2026 Fire TV. Its observations should not be treated as performance results for these devices.
Using inadequate power
Intermittent reboots, black screens, and failed updates can result when a stick is powered from a television USB port that cannot supply stable power. Use the supplied adapter and cable first, then replace them only when a compatible replacement is confirmed.
Troubleshooting by symptom
Black screen or “no signal”
- Confirm that the television is on the HDMI input where the stick is connected.
- Reseat the HDMI connection and power adapter.
- Try another HDMI port, especially one labeled for 4K or enhanced format.
- Temporarily disable advanced HDR or resolution settings if the TV cannot display the selected mode, then let the stick detect the display again.
Buffering or low picture quality
- Run the platform’s network check and compare signal strength at the TV, not beside the router.
- Move a mesh node or router closer, reduce interference, or use the strongest available band.
- Restart the router and stick, then install pending system and app updates.
- Test another service. If only one app buffers, its service or account may be the limiting factor.
Dolby Vision or HDR does not appear
- Confirm that the TV model and HDMI input support the format.
- Use a title and subscription tier that actually provide Dolby Vision or HDR10+.
- Check the stick’s display setting and the TV’s enhanced-HDMI setting.
- Remove an intermediate switch, receiver, or soundbar temporarily to identify whether it is blocking the format.
Remote will not control TV volume or power
Replace or recharge the remote batteries, pair the remote again, and run the platform’s equipment-control setup. Verify that the TV brand and control method are supported. You can still use the TV’s original remote if the included voice remote cannot control a particular set.
What the specifications do—and do not—prove
The official pages establish model identity, listed video formats, wireless descriptions, remote features, Fire TV’s Vega OS 2.0 designation, and Amazon’s stated Atmos support. They do not establish a universal interface ranking, a measured loading-time advantage, or a guaranteed performance lead. Those outcomes vary with software versions, app behavior, router conditions, television processing, and audio equipment.

Use the specifications as a compatibility filter, not as a promise that one stick will transform every television. For most buyers, the decision becomes straightforward after four checks: identify the exact model, confirm the TV’s HDR formats, verify required apps in the buyer’s region, and match the remote, network, and audio features to the household.
