Before you start streaming, open Settings > Preferences > Privacy Settings on every Fire TV device you use. Review Device Usage Data, Collect App Usage Data, and Interest-based Ads. If you use a Fire TV smart TV with an antenna, check the over-the-air viewing-data option. If your device has a Continue Watching row, also review Manage Sharing From Apps.
These switches control different kinds of information. Turning one off does not create a blanket stop to all data processing: some processing remains necessary for device features, Amazon services have their own controls, and each third-party streaming app may collect data under its own privacy policy.
Open the Fire TV privacy menu first
Using the Fire TV remote, open Settings, choose Preferences, and select Privacy Settings. Amazon documents these labels for Fire TV Products, but menus can vary by model, software version, and device type. If a label is slightly different, look for the closest equivalent under Preferences.

If you have two Fire TV devices, review the menu on both rather than assuming a change on one applies everywhere. The following order gives you the broadest control before you begin watching.

- Review Device Usage Data.
- Review Collect App Usage Data.
- Review Interest-based Ads.
- On a Fire TV smart TV, review over-the-air viewing data.
- On devices with Continue Watching, review Manage Sharing From Apps.

1. Turn off Device Usage Data if you do not want operating-system activity used for personalization
How to change it
- Open Settings.
- Choose Preferences.
- Select Privacy Settings.
- Open Device Usage Data.
- Set the option to off, then confirm if Fire TV asks.
Amazon says this opt-out stops processing of operating-system device-usage data for customized marketing offers and product improvement. The information can include activity such as moving through the home screen, changing device settings, and opening or closing apps.
What remains active
This is not a master “stop all collection” switch. Amazon says some processing continues when it is needed to provide device features, including Parental Controls and the Recents row. You may still see marketing offers; Amazon says they may simply be less relevant after this opt-out.
Use of Amazon services, such as Prime Video, is outside this particular setting. Interest-based advertising is controlled separately, and third-party apps can have their own collection practices. If your goal is to reduce personalized advertising, change both Device Usage Data and Interest-based Ads rather than assuming the first switch covers both.
2. Turn off Collect App Usage Data to limit Amazon’s record of third-party app use
How to change it
- Return to Settings > Preferences > Privacy Settings.
- Select Collect App Usage Data.
- Turn the setting off and accept the confirmation, if shown.
This control concerns Amazon’s collection of information about third-party apps on Fire TV Products: when an app is opened, when it is closed, and how long it is used. It is distinct from Device Usage Data, even though both involve activity on the device.
Turning it off does not change what an app itself may collect. For example, a streaming service can maintain its own viewing history, account activity, diagnostics, or advertising choices under its privacy notice. To change those practices, use the service’s account or privacy controls rather than relying on Fire TV’s menu.

3. Turn off Interest-based Ads to restrict use of the advertising ID
How to change it
- Open Settings > Preferences > Privacy Settings.
- Choose Interest-based Ads.
- Turn off the option and confirm if prompted.
Amazon describes the advertising ID as a resettable identifier made available to apps on certain Amazon devices for advertising and analytics. This setting instructs apps using that ID not to use it to build advertising profiles or target you with interest-based ads on the device.
What you should expect afterward
Turning off Interest-based Ads does not promise that every advertisement disappears. It also does not guarantee that every advertising-related data practice stops, because apps can use other identifiers or operate their own advertising systems. The practical change is narrower: participating apps that rely on the advertising ID are told not to use that ID for interest-based profiling and targeting on the device.

4. Opt out of over-the-air viewing data on a Fire TV smart TV
When this option applies
On supported Fire TV smart TVs, Amazon provides a control for information about over-the-air content received through an antenna connected directly to the television. Open Settings > Preferences > Privacy Settings and look for the over-the-air viewing-data option.
This setting is not documented as a universal option on every Fire TV product. A Fire TV Stick or another external streaming device may not show it, and an antenna connected to a separate television tuner is not the same setup as an antenna connected directly to a supported Fire TV smart TV.

What it does not change
The opt-out concerns antenna-delivered viewing information. It does not serve as a general streaming-history control for apps, and it does not replace the privacy settings offered by individual streaming services.
5. Review Manage Sharing From Apps when Continue Watching is present
Check whether your device supports it
Amazon documents Manage Sharing From Apps for Fire TV devices that have a Continue Watching row. If you do not see Continue Watching or the menu item, the control may not be available on that device or software version.
How to open the controls
- Open Settings.
- Choose Preferences.
- Select Privacy Settings.
- Open Manage Sharing From Apps.
Three choices inside the menu
- Manage participating apps individually: Review which supported apps may share viewing and content information, then change them one at a time.
- Control sharing across supported apps: Turn sharing of app viewing and content information on or off for participating apps.
- Stop syncing activity across Fire TV devices: Turn off synchronization of viewing activity between your Fire TV devices.
Sharing can support convenience features such as resuming a program and populating recommendations. Amazon’s developer documentation describes Content Personalization as opt-in and says shared viewing activity and watchlist data can support resume and recommendation features. Decide whether those conveniences outweigh the cross-app or cross-device sharing you want to allow.
How these settings fit together
The privacy menu is easier to understand when each switch is matched to the data type it addresses:
- Device Usage Data: operating-system and device-feature activity used for product improvement and customized marketing offers.
- Collect App Usage Data: Amazon’s record of third-party app opening, closing, and duration.
- Interest-based Ads: an instruction to apps using the advertising ID not to use it for interest-based profiles and targeted ads on the device.
- Over-the-air Viewing Data: antenna-delivered television viewing information on supported Fire TV smart TVs.
- Manage Sharing From Apps: viewing and content information shared among participating apps and, optionally, across Fire TV devices.
No single control covers all five categories. For example, turning off Collect App Usage Data does not turn off Interest-based Ads, and turning off Device Usage Data does not erase an app’s own viewing history.

After changing Fire TV’s switches, review each streaming app
Amazon’s Fire TV controls do not replace the privacy settings and notices for individual services. Apps and services may collect information separately from Amazon’s operating-system data. Open each service’s account, privacy, advertising, and playback-history controls when available, and review the provider’s current privacy notice.
This matters even if you turned off every switch that appears in Fire TV’s Privacy Settings. The Fire TV menu governs the scopes described above; it cannot rewrite the data practices of an app provider.

- Open Privacy Settings on every Fire TV device you use.
- Turn off Device Usage Data if you do not want operating-system activity processed for customized marketing offers and product improvement.
- Turn off Collect App Usage Data if you do not want Amazon collecting third-party app open, close, and duration information.
- Turn off Interest-based Ads if you do not want participating apps using the advertising ID for interest-based profiling and targeting on the device.
- If you use a supported Fire TV smart TV with a directly connected antenna, review the over-the-air viewing-data opt-out.
- If Continue Watching appears, decide whether to allow app viewing and content sharing and whether to sync activity between Fire TV devices.
- Review privacy and history controls inside each streaming app.
- Recheck the menu after a device reset, replacement, or major software update.
Troubleshooting missing or different options
A setting is not listed
Availability depends on the Fire TV product and its software. Over-the-air viewing data is documented for supported Fire TV smart TVs, while Manage Sharing From Apps is documented for devices with Continue Watching. External streaming devices may therefore show fewer choices than a Fire TV smart TV.
The switch changed on one device but not another
Amazon states that these settings are device-specific. Repeat the walkthrough on each Fire TV device rather than expecting a household-wide change.
You still see ads or recommendations
Turning off Device Usage Data can make marketing offers less relevant rather than remove them. Turning off Interest-based Ads does not remove every advertisement, and recommendations can use information outside the particular switch you changed. Check the relevant app’s controls as well.

You still see viewing activity in an app
Manage Sharing From Apps governs supported sharing between participating apps and Fire TV devices. An app’s own account history can remain because it is controlled by that provider. Use the app’s settings or privacy page for deletion and history options.
What to change if you want the least cross-service sharing
For the most restrictive configuration supported by these menus, turn off Device Usage Data, Collect App Usage Data, and Interest-based Ads. On a supported smart TV, opt out of over-the-air viewing data. On a device with Continue Watching, disable sharing for participating apps and turn off cross-device syncing. Then review each service separately.
This configuration can reduce personalization and convenience. Features such as relevant marketing, recommendations, resume information, or a synchronized Continue Watching experience may become less useful. Device functions that Amazon says are required for operation, such as Parental Controls and the Recents row, can still process necessary information.

What to change if convenience matters more
You can leave settings enabled when you value personalized offers, recommendations, and seamless resume features. Even then, inspect the participating-app list in Manage Sharing From Apps and allow only the apps whose sharing you understand. The decision is not all-or-nothing: Amazon provides separate controls so you can permit one type of use while declining another.
