A public proof of concept (POC) reports kernel-level root access on the second-generation Amazon Fire TV Cube by exploiting CVE-2022-38181, a use-after-free flaw in Arm Mali GPU drivers. The result is significant, but narrowly scoped: the code targets a specific Fire OS userspace, GPU driver branch and kernel configuration, and the available evidence does not show that it works on every Cube generation, firmware build or currently sold device.

What was exploited

CVE-2022-38181 is a memory-safety vulnerability in the Arm Mali GPU kernel driver. The National Vulnerability Database describes the underlying problem this way: “The Arm Mali GPU kernel driver allows unprivileged users to access freed memory because GPU memory operations are mishandled.” In practical terms, code running without root privileges can trigger the driver to reference memory after it has been released, creating a path toward corruption and escalation.

NIST assigns the vulnerability a CVSS 3.1 base score of 8.8 (High). Its affected-version record covers several driver families: Bifrost r0p0 through r38p1 and r39p0, Valhall r19p0 through r38p1 and r39p0, and Midgard r4p0 through r32p0. The driver-family ranges describe Arm software versions, not a list of every consumer product that can be exploited.

Which Fire TV Cube is involved?

The POC repository identifies its target as the second-generation Fire TV Cube, using the codename raven. Amazon’s published specification identifies that retail device as the 2019 Fire TV Cube, build model AFTR. It runs Fire OS 7 on an Amlogic S922X system-on-chip with an ARM Mali G52-MP2 GPU.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Those identifiers should not be collapsed into one claim. “AFTR” is Amazon’s published model identifier; “raven” is the name used by the POC repository. The repository also records a particular software fingerprint and says its adaptations account for a 32-bit Fire OS userspace, a Bifrost r16p0 driver and Linux kernel 4.9.113. A Mali GPU name by itself does not prove that another device, Cube generation or firmware is vulnerable.

How the reported root chain works

The repository author reports that the exploit obtains arbitrary kernel code execution, disables SELinux and then gains root. That is an author-reported result from the public implementation, not an independently reproduced test of retail Cubes.

The README advises running the program 30 to 90 seconds after boot “for greatest reliability.” This is timing guidance from the repository, not a guarantee. Differences in boot state, firmware, driver build or kernel configuration can change behavior, including causing the POC to fail or crash.

Why the flaw is described as four years old

Arm’s remediation timeline predates the 2026 publication context by roughly four years. GitHub Security Lab’s disclosure record says Arm accepted the issue as a security vulnerability on August 15, 2022. CVE-2022-38181 was assigned on October 3, 2022, and Arm driver version r40p0 was released to address it on October 7, 2022.

That timeline establishes when Arm fixed the driver line; it does not establish the exact Fire OS release in which Amazon incorporated the fix, whether a particular Cube received that update, or whether a device still running a named build is exploitable today.

What CISA and NIST mean for owners

CISA added CVE-2022-38181 to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog on March 30, 2023. Its listed action is to apply vendor updates, with a catalog due date of April 20, 2023. KEV inclusion is a warning that exploitation has been observed or is considered credible at the ecosystem level; it is not proof that every Fire TV Cube is vulnerable.

For a Cube owner, the defensible conclusion is to install all available Fire TV updates and avoid treating an old firmware build as automatically rootable. The available evidence does not provide a complete mapping between Amazon firmware versions and Arm’s fixed or affected driver versions. Check the device’s exact software build before drawing conclusions, and do not assume that a second-generation label alone matches the POC target.

Compatibility boundaries at a glance

Factor What the evidence identifies Why it matters
Retail device Fire TV Cube 2nd Gen (2019), model AFTR Amazon’s hardware specification identifies the product, but not exploitability of every unit.
POC target name raven The repository’s device naming must be matched to the target software configuration.
GPU ARM Mali G52-MP2; repository context specifies Bifrost r16p0 Driver family and exact revision are more informative than the Mali brand alone.
Userspace and kernel 32-bit Fire OS userspace and Linux 4.9.113 in the POC adaptation Changes in ABI, mitigations or kernel configuration can break the exploit.
Firmware patch state Not established for individual Amazon builds An updated device may no longer contain the vulnerable driver behavior.

What has not been demonstrated

  • That the POC works on the first-generation Cube, third-generation Cube or other Fire TV products.
  • That it works on every second-generation Cube firmware, including current retail software.
  • That Amazon shipped Arm’s r40p0 fix in one specific Fire OS build identified by the available evidence.
  • How many Cubes or users are affected; the vulnerability records list driver versions, not a device-population count.
  • Independent reproduction of the repository author’s root claim on a retail unit.

Practical implications

For security researchers, the report shows how an old GPU-driver flaw can become a device-specific privilege-escalation chain when the exploit is adapted to an embedded Android-derived environment. For ordinary owners, it is not a buying guide or a promise that purchasing a used Cube enables rooting. Compatibility depends on the exact model, build fingerprint, driver revision, kernel and patch state.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

Root access also changes the device’s security model: disabling SELinux and executing kernel code can expose credentials, streaming data and other applications to software that would otherwise be sandboxed. Anyone investigating the POC should use hardware they own, preserve a recovery path and understand that a failed kernel exploit can leave a device unusable.

The Bottom Line

The public exploit is best understood as a targeted demonstration against the second-generation Fire TV Cube configuration called raven, not as proof that all Fire TV Cubes can be rooted. CVE-2022-38181 is real and high severity, Arm released driver r40p0 in 2022, and CISA recommends vendor updates; the decisive question for any individual Cube remains its exact firmware and driver state.
