Choose an Amazon Fire tablet for lower-cost entertainment and Amazon’s child-focused features; choose an iPad if you need a broader app ecosystem and more general-purpose flexibility. Kindle books do not require a Fire: Amazon’s Kindle app is available for iPad. The right choice depends on the apps, screen size, and family features you need—not a universal winner.
Reading: Kindle books work on either device
A Fire tablet is a natural option if you mainly read through Amazon’s services, but it is not required to access a Kindle library. The Kindle app for iPad supports adjustable text and layout, notes, highlights, reading-progress tracking, and syncing between devices, according to its App Store listing.
For a reading decision, check whether the specific apps and services you use are available on the device you are considering. The key distinction is not Kindle access alone: it is the wider selection of apps and services you expect to use alongside reading.
Streaming and everyday entertainment
Amazon positions its Fire HD tablets for entertainment, and TechRadar describes the Fire HD 10 as a no-frills choice for streaming and light gaming. That is a reviewer’s assessment, not the result of a like-for-like laboratory comparison against an iPad. TechRadar also characterizes Fire OS as more constrained in app choice and says the reviewed HD 10 trails current competing tablets in performance. Those conclusions apply to the model and comparison in its cheap-tablet guide, not necessarily every Fire tablet or future release.

- Ready when inspiration strikes — With 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity, the Made for Amazon Stylus Pen (sold separately) offers a natural writing experience that responds to your handwriting. Use it to write, sketch in apps like OneNote, and more.
Screen size and battery claims
Amazon’s Fire HD specifications list the 2024 Fire HD 8 (12th generation) with an 8-inch, 1280 × 800 display, and Amazon describes the Fire HD 10 with a 10.1-inch 1080p display. A larger screen is a practical fit for shared video viewing, while the smaller HD 8 is easier to carry; those are inferences from screen size, not comparative test results.
Amazon claims up to 13 hours of battery life for both models. Separately, TechRadar reports a 13-hour result in its Fire HD 10 testing; its accessed guide does not state the test’s publication year. The Amazon figure is a manufacturer claim, while TechRadar’s is a reviewer-reported test result.
Check apps before buying
Do not assume a particular streaming service or reading app works on every Fire generation. Confirm availability for the exact model and your region, and check whether the apps your household needs are available before choosing a device.

Family use: Fire offers child-focused features with an important caveat
Amazon’s standard Fire parental controls can restrict web browsing; Email, Contacts, and Calendar apps; store purchases; Prime Video playback; content categories; wireless connectivity; camera use; and location-based services. A password is required for many activities. Amazon says these standard controls are designed for adult profiles and directs parents of children under 13 to use child profiles. Its parental-controls guidance also warns that enabling controls does not remove mature or adult-rated material from every app, store, or search result.
Kids editions and Kids+
Amazon’s family-device guide, updated September 1, 2026, describes Fire HD 8 Kids Pro and Fire HD 10 Kids Pro as offering built-in controls to filter inappropriate websites and allow app downloads with parental approval. Parents can adjust a child’s web access through Parent Dashboard. Amazon describes Kids+ as offering books, games, apps, podcasts, videos, and Alexa skills on supported Echo, Fire tablet, Fire TV, and Kindle devices.
These are Amazon’s product descriptions. Verify the exact model bundle, subscription eligibility, trial length, and included content at purchase; offers and terms can change. Consider the child’s age, which apps need approval, what web access is appropriate, and whether the included case and family features suit your household.

Cost, apps, and model age: what to verify
Fire is the more compelling direction when low-cost access to basic entertainment and Amazon’s family features are the priorities. An iPad is the stronger general-purpose choice when broader app availability and flexibility matter more. This comparison does not establish a single current price advantage for every configuration: prices, storage tiers, bundles, and availability change, and the sources here do not establish current iPad prices or specifications.
The Fire HD 8 listed in Amazon’s specifications is the 2024, 12th-generation model, with 3 GB or 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB or 64 GB of storage. Amazon lists the Fire HD 10 with 32 GB or 64 GB of storage. TechRadar’s guide says the HD 10 had not been updated since 2023 when that guide was accessed. Check the exact Fire SKU and iPad generation available in your region rather than assuming every model in either product line has the same capabilities or age.
Quick Recap
A practical checklist before choosing
- Price and total cost: Compare live prices for the exact storage configuration, plus any case, subscription, or Kids+ offer.
- Screen and handling: Decide whether an 8-inch portable screen or a 10.1-inch Fire HD 10 screen better fits reading, travel, and shared video use. Compare the exact iPad model separately.
- Apps: Confirm that your must-have streaming, reading, school, and communication apps are available on the specific device and in your region.
- Reading library: If you use Kindle, remember that the Kindle app is available on iPad; check your other reading services too.
- Child setup: Check the child’s age, whether you need a child profile, app-download approval, web-access settings, and what the chosen Kids edition includes.
- Storage and age: Verify the exact storage tier and generation, especially if comparing a current iPad with an older Fire model.
