For a child under 13, set up an Amazon Kids child profile on the Fire tablet; do not use the adult-profile restriction toggle as a substitute. On the tablet, go to Settings > Profiles & Family Library > Add a child profile, enter the child’s information, and select Add Profile. Then manage the child’s content and permissions in the profile settings or Amazon Kids Parent Dashboard. Creating a compatible-device child profile is free; Amazon Kids+ is optional.
Set up a child profile on a Fire tablet
Amazon’s device-specific instructions give this path: open Settings, select Profiles & Family Library, select Add a child profile, enter the child’s information, and select Add Profile. See Amazon’s Fire tablet profile instructions for device guidance. Menu labels can vary by Fire model generation and software version.
- Open Settings on the Fire tablet.
- Select Profiles & Family Library.
- Select Add a child profile.
- Enter the child’s information and select Add Profile.
- Select or switch to the child’s profile, then configure its settings on the tablet or in Parent Dashboard.
Amazon says compatible devices can have up to four separate child profiles. Its Quick Start Guides list Kids models including Fire HD 10 Kids and Kids Pro (13th Generation), and Fire HD 8 Kids and Kids Pro (12th Generation, 2024 Release).
Do you need Amazon Kids+?
No. Amazon says creating a child profile on a compatible device has no additional cost. Amazon Kids+ is an optional subscription for premium kid-friendly content, not a requirement to create a profile or use the setup steps. See Amazon’s child profile and Kids+ information.

Manage the child’s profile in Parent Dashboard
Amazon describes the dashboard this way: “Amazon Kids Parent Dashboard allows parents to manage their child’s profile settings, access digital content, and stay connected to their kids’ digital activities.” Amazon says it is available in a browser and mobile app to customers with at least one child profile. The controls vary between the app and browser. See Amazon’s Parent Dashboard overview.
Time, access, and filters
- Set daily screen-time limits and device-access controls.
- Set age and language filters for Amazon Kids+ content.
- In the browser dashboard, manage weekday and weekend access, educational goals, screen-time limits, and recent activity.
Choose which content is available
- Open Parent Dashboard in the website or app.
- Select Content, then choose the child’s profile.
- Choose a content category and toggle individual items on or off.
Purchased Amazon content and Amazon Kids+ subscription content are separate categories. To let a child request titles from the store, Amazon says to enable Store access in that profile’s settings. For details, see Amazon’s instructions for managing a child’s content.
Understand content and web limits
Amazon’s documented content workflow does not allow personal documents, music, Prime Video rentals, or Prime-included videos to be added to a child profile. Some apps may contain ads, external links, in-app purchases, or requests for personal information. Amazon also notes that turning off web access in a child profile may not remove access to every website embedded within content.

These are distinct setups. Amazon directs parents of children under 13 to use a child profile. Its separate Fire Tablet Parental Controls are designed to restrict access on an adult profile for users 13 and older. Do not treat the adult-profile restriction as the normal way to configure a young child’s account. See Amazon’s adult-profile Parental Controls instructions.
Restrict access to an adult profile
- Swipe down twice from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings.
- Select Settings > Profile and Parental Controls.
- Switch on Restrict access to current profile.
- Enter and confirm a password, then select Finish.
A lock icon appears when the restriction is enabled. This parental-controls password is different from the tablet’s lock-screen password. Amazon’s adult-profile instructions say forgetting it requires a factory reset to restore full access. A separate Parent Dashboard help page gives a deregister-and-reregister recovery path for a forgotten parental-controls PIN. Follow the recovery instructions for the exact control and interface you used; password and PIN are not interchangeable terms. See Amazon’s adult-profile password guidance and Amazon’s Parent Dashboard PIN recovery guidance.
Manage or remove a child profile
Amazon says profiles can be created or managed through Parent Dashboard or Amazon Family. Its profile-management page states that a child profile inactive for more than 18 months is removed automatically. The page distinguishes removing a profile from Parent Dashboard from removing it from the Amazon account; use the option that matches what you intend to remove. See Amazon’s profile-management instructions.
