For U.S. shoppers, there is no single winner for both returns and clothing selection. Nordstrom’s stated free in-store and mail options are the clearest convenience advantage in this comparison. Zara offers free store returns but charges a fee for courier drop-off, while ASOS allows eligible returns within 28 days but deducts $4.95 from guest-checkout refunds. Amazon.com requires the most listing-level checking because its U.S. source is a general policy with seller- and item-specific exceptions, not one fashion-wide promise. Selection also has no defensible universal winner: compare the exact brands, sizes, fits, styles and prices you need on the product page.
What this comparison can—and cannot—tell you
This is a practical comparison for online clothing orders delivered in the United States. A return policy applies to a particular country, retailer, item, seller and order route. “Free returns” is therefore not a safe general description unless the exact listing and checkout page confirm it.
The available policies do not provide comparable apparel-inventory counts, independent size-range audits or like-for-like measures of category breadth. Amazon operates a marketplace alongside its own retail inventory, while Nordstrom, ASOS and Zara present more fashion-focused storefronts. That difference does not prove which site has the most useful selection for your wardrobe. The useful question is whether the exact item you want is available in your size, preferred fit, color, price range and delivery window, with a return route you can accept.

Amazon Fashion: why the U.S. listing matters more than a headline promise
Amazon’s U.S. general return policy says some returns may have variable shipping fees determined by factors such as size, weight and handling. It also notes that additional fees may apply when an item is returned to a third-party seller. Because this policy covers many categories, it does not establish one clothing-specific return period or guarantee that every apparel listing has free returns.
Check these fields before buying
- Open the exact clothing listing rather than relying on a retailer-wide assumption.
- Identify whether the item is sold and fulfilled by Amazon or by a marketplace seller.
- Record the return-by date shown for your order; do not infer it from another item’s date.
- Read the fee and method disclosure, including any size, weight, handling or seller charge.
- Save the order confirmation and the return instructions in case the listing changes.
Amazon’s fashion-specific page retrieved for this comparison is for the United Kingdom, not the United States. It says eligible clothes, shoes, handbags, jewellery and watches can be returned within 30 days, with free-return eligibility marked on the individual product page; seller-fulfilled products are returned directly to the seller. Those details illustrate why listing-level checks matter, but they must not be presented as U.S. terms.
Do not plan around Try Before You Buy
Amazon ended its Try Before You Buy fashion program in 2025; Associated Press reported January 31, 2025, as the last day eligible customers could place orders. An Amazon spokesperson, quoted by Associated Press, said the option was being phased out as the company emphasized virtual try-on, personalized size recommendations, review highlights and improved size charts. The program is not a current way to receive apparel, try it and pay only for what you keep. A dated report that apparel returns would remain free also does not establish that every present U.S. clothing listing has a free return.

Nordstrom’s U.S. returns page describes free returns in stores or by mail. For a mailed return, the page states that processing takes 8–12 business days; after processing, a refund is expected in 3–5 business days. Those are processing expectations, not a guarantee that money will appear immediately after the carrier accepts your parcel.

Limits that matter
- Nordstrom handles returns case by case and says it cannot accommodate every return.
- A third-party seller product has a specific return-by date assigned by that seller in your order history.
- International Nordstrom.com orders placed through Borderfree or ESW use a different process and do not qualify for free returns or merchandise exchanges.
For a U.S. shopper who values a stated free mail option, Nordstrom is the most straightforward policy in this set. You still need to verify who sold the item and the date attached to your order.
ASOS: a defined window with a guest-return deduction
The ASOS U.S. policy allows an unwanted item to be returned within 28 days of delivery or collection when it is in original condition and is not marked Final Sale. ASOS says guest-checkout returns cost $4.95, deducted from the refund, so ASOS returns are not uniformly free for U.S. shoppers.
Condition and seller rules
- Fair Use requirements apply in addition to the 28-day deadline.
- Final Sale merchandise is generally excluded.
- Hygiene-sealed goods can be non-returnable after the seal or label is broken.
- Items sold and shipped by ASOS Brand Partners may follow the partner’s own return policy.
ASOS says it aims to issue a refund within 14 days after the returned item reaches its warehouse. That is a stated target measured from warehouse receipt, not from the date you hand the parcel to a carrier.

Choose the route carefully
- Return the qualifying online purchase at an eligible U.S. Zara store at no additional cost.
- Use the prepaid label and drop the parcel at the courier location, but expect a shipping fee for that route.
Because the available terms are dated, open Zara’s current U.S. terms and the order’s return instructions before purchasing. The same 30-day wording should not be assumed if the retailer has revised its policy.
Which store has the better clothing selection?
No evidence in this comparison supports naming Amazon, Nordstrom, ASOS or Zara as the objective selection winner. There are no comparable current counts for apparel listings, brands, categories, sizes or in-stock colors, and a raw listing count would not measure whether the clothes fit your needs.
Amazon’s marketplace model can place many independent sellers and fulfillment arrangements beside Amazon’s own inventory. The other retailers organize their sites as fashion destinations. That structural difference is useful context, but it is not proof that one has a broader or better assortment for every shopper.
Measure selection against your actual brief
Write down the requirements that would make an item useful, then compare the same fields on each retailer’s product page:

- Brand and line: Search for the exact label or collection rather than the broad word “dress,” “jeans” or “jacket.”
- Size and fit: Check whether your size is in stock now, whether the garment uses numeric, lettered or extended sizing, and whether measurements are supplied.
- Style and construction: Compare cut, fabric, rise, sleeve length, closure, lining and care instructions.
- Color and availability: A retailer may list a style but have your preferred color unavailable.
- Price after delivery: Include shipping, taxes and any return deduction before calling one option cheaper.
- Delivery estimate: A nominally available size is less useful if it arrives after the event or trip for which you need it.
- Seller identity: On marketplace listings, confirm who is responsible for fulfillment, customer service and returns.
A simple side-by-side method
- Choose two or three identical search requirements, such as a black women’s medium wool coat under a specific budget.
- Open the same number of results at each retailer and discard items that fail your size, color or delivery requirement.
- For the remaining candidates, record the full price, seller, delivery estimate, return deadline, route and fee.
- Buy from the retailer whose qualifying item meets your priorities, not from the site with the most search results.

Pre-checklist before you place a clothing order
- Set your deadline. Count backward from the date you need the item, allowing time for delivery, fitting and the return trip.
- Capture the policy. Save the product-page return statement, order return-by date and any fee disclosure.
- Check condition rules. Look for Final Sale language, hygiene seals, tags, unworn requirements and Fair Use limits.
- Confirm the responsible seller. A marketplace or Brand Partner item may not follow the host retailer’s standard policy.
- Price the complete transaction. Add delivery, taxes and a possible return deduction such as ASOS’s $4.95 guest fee.
- Choose the return route you can actually use. A free store return is less convenient if the nearest eligible store is far away; a paid courier route may be preferable to a long drive.
What to do when a return goes wrong
The date or fee changed after checkout
Use the order confirmation and the return terms attached to that order, not a generic policy page opened later. Contact the retailer with the order number and a saved copy of the original disclosure before sending the item.
The item is marked non-returnable
Check whether the restriction comes from Final Sale status, a broken hygiene seal, missing tags, wear, washing or a seller-specific rule. If the item arrived damaged or materially different from its description, document the condition immediately with photographs and report it through the order’s support channel.
The refund is delayed
Keep the carrier acceptance receipt and tracking number. For Nordstrom mail returns, allow the stated 8–12 business-day processing period before applying the additional 3–5 business days described for the refund. For ASOS, its 14-day target begins when the item reaches its warehouse, so carrier delivery and warehouse receipt are different milestones.

Review the seller’s instructions and the return-by date in your order history. Marketplace seller terms can differ from the host retailer’s standard policy; use the platform’s order-specific escalation path if the seller does not follow the displayed terms.
Bottom line for U.S. shoppers
If your first priority is a clearly stated free return route, Nordstrom’s described in-store and mail options are the strongest starting point, subject to its case-by-case handling and seller exceptions. Zara can be attractive when you can use a qualifying store, but its courier drop-off route carries a fee. ASOS provides a defined 28-day period for eligible items, while guest returns cost $4.95 and Brand Partner or Final Sale rules can change the result. Amazon.com is not safely summarized by a universal fashion return promise in the available U.S. policy; inspect the exact seller, date, route and fee on each listing.
For selection, choose the retailer that has the specific brand, size, fit, style, price and delivery date you need. The evidence does not justify calling any one of these stores the overall selection winner.
