If your Amazon Echo has stopped working, check its power, microphone mute status and internet connection before resetting it. The right fix depends on what stopped: Alexa may not respond to your voice, the Echo may be offline, setup may be stuck, or a connected smart-home device may be the real problem.

Start with power and basic response

  1. Check the power connection. Make sure the Echo is plugged in and, if possible, use the adapter supplied with that device. Amazon recommends the supplied adapter when troubleshooting voice response: Amazon’s voice-response troubleshooting.
  2. Check whether the microphone is muted. Amazon says a red light indicates that the microphone is muted. Use the microphone button to unmute it, then try a voice request again.
  3. Test the Action button. On an Echo speaker, press the Action button. If the device responds to the button but not to your voice, focus on mute status and listening conditions rather than assuming the speaker has failed.

If the Echo is unresponsive during setup, Amazon’s setup guidance recommends unplugging it for 30 seconds and plugging it back in: Amazon setup troubleshooting. A separate instruction for an unresponsive Echo 3rd or 4th generation says to unplug it for 10 seconds before reconnecting: Amazon Echo 3rd- and 4th-generation reset guidance. These intervals come from different support instructions; use the directions for your model and situation.

If Alexa will not respond to your voice

After confirming that the microphone is unmuted, consider whether the Echo can hear you clearly. Move it away from walls, other speakers and background noise, then try speaking again. Amazon suggests asking, “Did you hear me?” to check whether Alexa picked up the request. More voice-response checks are in Amazon’s voice-response troubleshooting.

If pressing the Action button works but spoken commands do not, revisit the mute indicator and placement before moving on to Wi-Fi checks. If neither voice commands nor the button gets a response, try the appropriate restart instructions for your device.

If the Echo will not connect to Wi-Fi

  1. Check whether the internet works elsewhere. Try another phone, tablet or computer on the same network. If those devices also cannot get online, restart the router and the Echo.
  2. Move the Echo closer to the router. Amazon Customer Service UK recommends keeping it within 30 feet (10 meters) of the router. Move it away from possible interference, including microwaves, baby monitors and other electronics: Amazon Wi-Fi troubleshooting.
  3. Check the network password. If other devices work but the Echo does not, make sure the password is correct. If you recently changed the Wi-Fi password, update the Echo’s Wi-Fi settings.
  4. Reduce network congestion as a test. If many devices are connected, temporarily reducing the number may help identify whether congestion is affecting the Echo.

Amazon separates initial Wi-Fi setup from ongoing connection problems in its support topics. Choose the guidance that matches your situation in Amazon’s Echo support index.

If Alexa responds but a smart-home device does not

When Alexa answers normally but cannot control a light, plug or other connected product, test that accessory in the app made by its manufacturer. If it does not work there either, investigate the accessory or its internet connection. If it works in the manufacturer’s app but not through Alexa, Amazon advises checking the Alexa skill and reactivating it if needed: Amazon smart-home troubleshooting. This helps distinguish an accessory or skill problem from an Echo problem.

Restarting is not the same as resetting

A restart is a lower-disruption step: it power-cycles the Echo without intentionally erasing its settings. A factory reset is more disruptive and can require setup again. Amazon’s instructions for Echo 3rd and 4th generation distinguish a reset that keeps smart-home connections from a factory reset that erases personal information and device and smart-home connections. The listed reset-button procedures use a 20-second press, but they are model-specific: Amazon’s Echo 3rd- and 4th-generation reset guidance.

Try a reset only after power, network and setup checks have not solved the issue. Do not apply button combinations for Echo 3rd or 4th generation to another model. Amazon provides separate support pages for Echo Dot, Echo Show, Echo Pop, Echo Studio and other devices in its Echo support index; select the page for your exact model before resetting.
