Short answer: Neither Ubuntu nor Windows Server is a universal winner for streaming to YouTube from Amazon EC2. Choose the system that fits your encoder and production software, then confirm that the specific EC2 instance, graphics driver, and desktop session work together. OBS documents Linux/Unix and Windows 10/11 requirements, but its cited requirements do not establish support for Windows Server. YouTube’s stream settings are mostly independent of the host operating system.
This comparison is about running an encoder on an EC2 virtual machine and sending its output to YouTube. It is different from using EC2 only to control a local computer that captures your camera, microphone, game, or desktop. In the cloud-encoding setup, the media and audio sources must be accessible to the VM.
Which should you choose: Ubuntu or Windows Server?
Start with software compatibility rather than assuming the operating system determines stream quality. If your production workflow depends on Windows-only software or plugins, Windows may be the practical choice—but verify that they support your exact Windows Server release. If your encoder and workflow run on Linux, Ubuntu may fit. In either case, test the whole configuration before relying on it for a live broadcast.
- OBS compatibility: OBS lists Windows 10 or 11 and Linux/Unix requirements. It does not list Windows Server on the cited requirements page, so do not treat the Windows 10/11 entry as confirmation of Server compatibility. Check the exact Server release, OBS version, drivers, and graphical session.
- Graphics and encoding: EC2 GPU instances can support graphics workloads, but require an appropriate driver. AWS documents NVIDIA Tesla, GRID, and gaming driver families and lists NVENC among supported APIs. The suitable driver depends on the instance and use case; confirm hardware encoding on your chosen setup rather than assuming it is available.
- Display and sources: OBS’s Linux/Unix requirements name an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and an X window system or Wayland. A cloud-side OBS setup also needs a working graphics session and access to the media and audio being streamed. The cited guidance is not a complete unattended EC2 desktop recipe.
- Workload: CPU and GPU demands depend on encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Run a representative test and watch YouTube’s stream health instead of inferring performance from the OS name.
OBS cautions that meeting its basic requirements does not guarantee adequate streaming or recording capability. AWS’s description of GPU instances for graphics applications—including game and 3-D application streaming—supports considering a GPU instance when the workload needs graphics acceleration; it does not establish a universal instance size for YouTube encoding.

EC2 cost: compare the complete configuration
The available evidence does not establish an apples-to-apples Ubuntu versus Windows Server price difference. EC2 cost depends on the selected instance, region, image, and applicable licensing. Check current AWS pricing for the exact configuration you plan to use before choosing on cost; there is no substantiated OS cost delta or universal cheapest option here.
YouTube encoder settings that matter
YouTube’s live-encoder guidance recommends choosing a reliable quality that fits available upload bitrate, testing with representative movement and audio before going live, and monitoring stream health during the broadcast. YouTube transcodes live streams for viewers on different devices and networks. These are YouTube ingestion recommendations, not a promise that a particular EC2 instance can encode or deliver the stream at that rate.

Protocol, codecs, and keyframes
- Transport: YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the stream into and through Google’s servers. Use it if your encoder supports it.
- Video codec: YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS settings list H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1.
- Rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR).
- Frame rate: The settings allow up to 60 fps.
- Keyframe interval: YouTube recommends two seconds and says it should not exceed four seconds.
- Audio: The listed audio codecs are AAC and MP3.
YouTube’s published 1080p bitrate figures
The figures below are YouTube’s published ingestion guidance; the page does not state a publication year. Minimum and recommended rates vary by codec and frame rate.
| Resolution and frame rate | Codec | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | H.264 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | H.264 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
At 1080p60, YouTube recommends 17 Mbps for H.264 or 12 Mbps for AV1/H.265. Your encoder must be capable of producing the selected output, and the network path must sustain its bitrate. Do not treat the table as a measured EC2 guarantee.

Set up an EC2 encoder and connect it to YouTube
- Create or select a stream in YouTube Studio. Open Live Control Room and create a stream or select an existing one. Copy the server URL and stream key for your encoder. Treat the key as a secret: anyone with it may be able to send video to your channel.
- Prepare the EC2 environment. Install OBS or another compatible encoder, then verify the exact operating-system release, graphics driver, encoder, and graphical session together. If using a GPU instance, install the appropriate driver for that instance and verify that the intended encoding path is available.
- Make sources available to the VM. For a cloud-side stream, ensure the video and any required audio sources can be accessed from EC2. A microphone, webcam, or headset connected to a local computer does not automatically become available to the VM.
- Configure the encoder. Enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key. Select a supported codec and RTMPS where available. Set CBR, choose a resolution and frame rate your encoder can sustain, and use a two-second keyframe interval (not more than four seconds). Use YouTube’s bitrate guidance as an initial target.
- Test before the broadcast. Send a test with representative motion and audio. Check the preview and stream health in Live Control Room; adjust bitrate or quality if the connection is unstable. A speed test can help check available upload bitrate, but a representative encoder test is still important.
- Start the broadcast. Once the encoder is sending and the preview and health indicators look right, use Live Control Room to go live. YouTube’s documented control flow is not specific to Ubuntu or Windows.
Troubleshooting common EC2 streaming problems
- OBS will not install or run on Windows Server: The cited OBS requirements list Windows 10/11, not Windows Server. Confirm compatibility for your exact Server and OBS versions; do not assume that a Windows desktop requirement proves Server support.
- Hardware encoding is missing: Check that the instance supports the intended graphics workload and that its appropriate driver is installed. AWS documents different NVIDIA driver families; the correct choice depends on instance and use case.
- OBS opens without a usable display or scene: Check the VM’s graphical session and GPU support. On Linux/Unix, OBS lists X window system or Wayland and an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU among its requirements. Confirm that your sources are accessible in the session running OBS.
- YouTube reports unstable stream health: Test the available upload bitrate and lower the stream bitrate or quality if the path cannot sustain it. Recheck with representative audio and motion, then monitor health in Live Control Room.
- The stream does not appear in Live Control Room: Verify the server URL and stream key in the encoder, confirm it is sending, and make sure you selected the intended stream. If you regenerate a key, update the encoder with the new one.
- Output quality or frame rate falls short: Recheck resolution, frame rate, codec, scene complexity, and encoder load. OS choice alone does not diagnose the bottleneck; test the actual instance and configuration.
Copyright, live access, and reused material
Using EC2 or OBS does not grant rights to the video, music, or other material in a stream. Before broadcasting, confirm that you have the rights or permissions needed for every source. YouTube’s encoder setup uses a stream URL and key, but the setup guidance does not establish that a particular channel is eligible for every live feature or that uploaded material complies with YouTube’s policies. Check YouTube’s current rules for your channel and content before scheduling a stream.
