Neither Amazon EC2 nor Google Cloud Compute Engine is a proven universal winner for running a 24/7 YouTube loop. Both can host software that sends a prerecorded video to YouTube Live, but a fair choice depends on matched machine capability, region, sustained upload, outbound-transfer billing, and how you handle restarts. The cited material does not establish a matched monthly cost or reliability winner.
What the cloud VM does in a YouTube loop
A virtual machine does not create the video or make a YouTube stream live by itself. You supply a prerecorded file or playlist and run an encoder on the VM; the encoder sends video and audio to YouTube Live using the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. YouTube supports software and hardware encoders, and does not require a particular cloud provider. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
In this comparison, EC2 and Compute Engine are candidate hosts for the software-encoding and outbound-ingest part of the workflow. The available evidence does not report a deployment test on either service, so treat the steps below as a setup and evaluation approach, not a claim that a particular VM configuration has been validated.

Compare specific configurations rather than provider names. Select a region near your operations and intended YouTube ingest, then match the machines for usable CPU or GPU capacity, storage, and operating system. Encoding requirements depend on the chosen resolution, frame rate, codec, and whether encoding is done in software or hardware acceleration.

Compute Engine bandwidth is a ceiling, not a promise
Google documents a maximum of 3 Gbps per flow to destinations outside a VPC for most machine series, with exceptions and further restrictions depending on machine type and Tier_1 networking. Google also warns that actual bandwidth can be lower due to factors such as packet size, protocol overhead, number of flows and network congestion. That published ceiling is not a guarantee of sustained throughput for a YouTube stream. Check the exact machine and route in Google Cloud’s networking documentation.
AWS media services are a different comparison
AWS documentation describes a media-delivery architecture using an encoder such as AWS Elemental MediaLive, optionally MediaPackage or MediaStore as an origin, and CloudFront for distribution. That is a broader media-services workflow, including 24/7 channels; it does not establish that a general-purpose EC2 VM is cheaper or better than a Compute Engine VM sending a single stream to YouTube. Viewer delivery through a CDN and encoder-to-YouTube ingest are different uses and should not be combined in one cost comparison. See AWS’s live streaming solution overview.

How to run a loop from either provider
- Prepare the source. Confirm that the video and audio are cleared for live streaming and archiving. Decide on the target resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate before sizing the VM.
- Create a YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, create or configure the live stream and obtain the server URL and stream key. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send content to the stream.
- Provision the VM. Choose an EC2 or Compute Engine machine with enough sustained processing capacity for the selected encoder settings, plus storage for the source media. Configure the operating system, encoder, and any restart and monitoring mechanisms you need. Exact provider console paths and machine recommendations vary by configuration; verify the current provider documentation before deployment.
- Configure the encoder. Enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key, choose RTMPS where supported, and set the video and audio parameters. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts data to and through Google’s servers.
- Start a representative test. Test with audio and movement similar to the intended stream. Confirm the image, audio, bitrate, and stream health in YouTube Live Control Room before relying on a continuous broadcast.
- Enable the loop and recovery plan. Configure the encoder or playback workflow to repeat the prerecorded material, and decide how the VM and encoder will restart after a process or machine interruption. Monitor both the VM and YouTube stream health; do not assume a running VM guarantees a healthy ingest.
Set bitrate and validate stream health
YouTube’s published recommendations depend on resolution, frame rate, and codec. At 30 fps, it lists 10 Mbps for 1080p using AV1 or H.265 and 14 Mbps for 1080p using H.264; for 720p at 30 fps, it lists 6 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 and 8 Mbps for H.264. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not proof that a particular VM can encode or upload reliably at those rates. Check the full current matrix in YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
- Use the recommendation for your actual resolution, frame rate, and codec rather than copying a bitrate from a different format.
- Test with representative motion and audio; a static or silent test may not reveal problems that occur with the real program.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators during testing and during operation. If health degrades, investigate the encoder load, configured bitrate, and sustained network path rather than relying on a published maximum network ceiling.
- Use a recovery plan that can restart the encoder and restore the stream after an interruption. Confirm the behavior in a test before leaving the loop unattended.
Estimate cost without assuming a provider winner
No matched monthly estimate is established here. VM prices and network billing depend on configuration and can change. For each provider, price the same intended region, a similarly capable continuously running machine, the same operating system assumptions, persistent storage, any required IP or ancillary charges, and the expected runtime. Then check the providers’ current outbound-transfer rules for the actual YouTube destination. The available evidence does not establish that traffic to YouTube receives a particular egress discount from either provider.

- Choose the target bitrate and calculate the expected always-on runtime.
- Select and price comparable machines in the regions you would actually use.
- Add storage and any other required infrastructure charges.
- Check the current destination-specific outbound-transfer billing terms for each provider.
- Run a sustained test at the intended settings, then compare the observed stream stability and actual bill.
Recheck prices and billing rules before committing; a comparison based on different machine sizes, regions, or runtimes is not meaningful.
Account for YouTube archiving, rights and monetization
Archiving has a duration boundary
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its cited guidance does not establish that a stream lasting longer than 12 hours will be archived in full. Looping does not guarantee monetization
YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply to live streams. The policy clarification dated July 15, 2025 says repetitive or mass-produced material falls under its inauthentic-content policy. Content is expected to be original and authentic; repeated material with little variation, commentary, or educational value may be ineligible. Reused-content review is separate from copyright clearance and can apply at channel level. Read YouTube’s channel monetization policies; do not treat a loop, by itself, as a route to monetization or increased watch time.
Clear the rights before broadcasting
YouTube’s livestream terms require the content provider to represent that they hold the necessary rights for exploitation of live content on Google services worldwide, including applicable music licensing rights, and to comply with applicable laws. Check the video, soundtrack, and other included material for the rights needed for both streaming and any archive you plan to keep. See YouTube’s livestream terms.

When a managed service may fit better than a VM
YouTube’s encoder help page identifies Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded videos. That makes it an adjacent managed-software option, not a directly comparable EC2 or Compute Engine VM; the cited guidance does not establish its price or performance against either provider. YouTube also lists standalone hardware encoders, which may suit a camera or production feed but are not established as necessary for a prerecorded cloud loop. See YouTube’s encoder options.
