Amazon Bedrock’s console playground is a practical way to try supported foundation models before building an application. From there, you can move to API inference and, when your model and API support it, use prompt caching to reuse eligible prompt prefixes. A cache toggle alone does not guarantee a hit or a lower bill: verify cache usage in the response and check the selected model’s access, regional availability, and current prices.
How do you get started with Amazon Bedrock?
Begin in a console playground to experiment with a supported model and see how it responds to your prompts. AWS describes playgrounds as a way to try foundation models; Bedrock also provides model evaluation for comparing outputs. The available models and features depend on your account and Region, so first check the selected model’s access requirements and availability. Try a supported model in the console

Open the Amazon Bedrock console and select a playground for the task you want to try.

Choose a model available to your account in the intended AWS Region. If it is unavailable, review its access instructions and any provider prerequisites.

Enter a representative prompt, adjust supported inference settings, and compare the outputs against your task’s requirements.

Check the model’s current pricing before experimenting. Playground use can incur service charges; do not assume a session is free.
These steps describe the general path, not a guarantee that every model or console option is available in every account. AWS says many models are enabled by default when the account has the required AWS Marketplace permissions, while some need additional account-level access or provider prerequisites.
Know when the playground is not enough
Playgrounds do not support custom models, and embedding models require API inference. For those cases—and for application workflows that need repeatable integration—move to Bedrock’s APIs rather than expecting the playground to cover the entire task. What is prompt caching, and when can it help?
Prompt caching lets supported models reuse eligible repeated prompt prefixes. It can reduce response latency and input-token costs for workloads that repeatedly send long, stable context—for example, an unchanged set of instructions or reference material followed by a new question. It is optional, and support and rules vary by model and API. AWS prompt caching documentation
A cache hit is not guaranteed, even when prompts repeat. With implicit caching, Bedrock and the model attempt to reuse eligible prefixes automatically; AWS describes this as best-effort. Put stable content first and changing content later to improve the chance of an exact prefix match. With explicit caching, your request marks reusable sections through model-specific controls or checkpoints. The marked prefix needs to remain static: edits can prevent a match. Minimum token requirements, checkpoint limits, and time-to-live (TTL) vary by model.
Enable caching in a supported console workflow
For supported models, caching may already be enabled in the playground. If it is not, AWS documents a configuration-menu control for turning it on and reviewing checkpoints and caching metrics. The minimum applies to the cumulative prefix, and the threshold is model-specific; enabling the control does not establish that the prompt is long enough or that a cache hit occurred. Verify hits instead of assuming savings
Inspect the response’s usage fields for cache-read and cache-write counts. Those metrics show whether tokens were read from or written to cache; turning caching on, or submitting the same prompt repeatedly, is not proof of a hit. Cached reads use the model-specific cache-read rate, while cache writes may cost more than standard input tokens. Compare the returned counts and applicable rates with the uncached usage before deciding whether caching benefits your workload. AWS prompt caching documentation
How should you compare models and estimate cost?
Choose a model by testing the dimensions that affect your actual workload, not by looking for a universal winner. AWS pricing varies by modality, provider, and model, and lists Standard, Flex, Priority, and Reserved tiers. The right comparison should include both whether a model can do the task and what its supported features and usage cost in your account and Region. Amazon Bedrock pricing

API and feature support: Does the model support the inference path and caching approach you need?

Observed output quality: Compare responses to representative prompts rather than inferring quality from a model name.

Applicable prices: Check current standard input and output rates, cache-read and cache-write rates where applicable, and any other relevant charges for the model and tier.

AWS states that selected foundation models are offered for batch inference at 50% lower prices than on-demand pricing. That comparison applies to selected models, not every model or workload; verify eligibility and current rates on the pricing page. Price details can change, so avoid applying a rate from one model, Region, tier, or date to another.

Also check the billing terms for your AWS account plan and eligible credits. AWS’s Free Tier activity page specifically notes that using a foundation model in the Bedrock playground incurs service charges deducted from credits. Explore: Use a supported model in a console playground and try prompts that reflect the task you want to solve.

Compare: Evaluate outputs from candidate models against the same representative prompts, while checking account access, Region availability, and feature support.

Integrate: Move to API inference when you need application integration, a custom model, or embedding inference.

Optimize repeated context: If the workload sends a long, stable prefix repeatedly, check whether its model and API support caching and whether the prefix meets the model’s requirements.

Measure: Inspect cache-read and cache-write usage and compare actual usage costs with the applicable uncached rates.
