Choose the Amazon Alexa Tablet 8 (2026) if you want Android 16, Google Play, Wi-Fi 6, Alexa+, better cameras and a slightly larger display. Choose the Fire HD 8 (2024, 12th Gen) if the lower published starting price and microSD expansion matter more than newer hardware and software.
These are different device families, despite the similar names. This comparison uses the Fire HD 8 released in 2024, not the separately listed Fire HD 8 (2022), which also carries a 12th-generation label. Prices and availability below are Amazon’s published US context as of October 2026 and can change.
Which tablet is the better buy?
The Alexa Tablet 8 is the stronger all-around specification choice. It has a newer MediaTek processor, 4GB of RAM in the announced base model, Android 16 with full Google Play Store access, Wi-Fi 6, an 8.7-inch display, higher-resolution cameras and integrated Alexa+. Its announced US starting price is $229.99 for 64GB of storage.
The Fire HD 8 (2024) is the value and storage-flexibility choice. Amazon’s September 2026 product article says the lineup starts at $99.99, and the tablet accepts a microSD card of up to 1TB. It runs Fire OS 8 and offers 3GB/32GB or 4GB/64GB configurations. That lower entry price comes with older hardware, a smaller screen and a more limited Alexa display mode.
#1 Best Overall
- Fire HD 8 offers an 8" HD display for seamless streaming and gaming, coupled with a 5MP rear facing camera for photos—with a thin, light, durable design.
- Fast and responsive with long battery life - With up to 4 GB RAM (2X more than 2022 release), 64GB of storage, and up to 1 TB of expandable storage (sold separately). Hexa-core processor for fast, responsive performance. Up to 13 hours of reading, browsing the web, watching videos, gaming, and listening to music at home and on-the-go.
- Save time, get creative - Enjoy three smart tools to help you send polished emails, quickly summarize webpages, and create unique wallpapers.
- Stream or download your favorite shows, movies, and games (like Minecraft, Roblox, and more). Enjoy your favorite content from Facebook, Hulu, Instagram, TikTok, and more through Amazon’s Appstore (Google Play not supported. Subscription for some apps required).
- Stay connected with family and friends - ask Alexa to make video calls to friends and family or download apps like Zoom.
Neither battery figure is an independent head-to-head result: Amazon rates the Alexa Tablet 8 for up to 14 hours of video playback, while it rates the Fire HD 8 for up to 13 hours of battery life using different wording and conditions.
First, identify the exact models
Amazon lists three relevant names that are easy to confuse:
- Amazon Alexa Tablet 8 (2026): the first-generation Alexa Tablet 8, announced in 2026.
- Amazon Fire HD 8 (2024, 12th Gen): the Fire model compared here.
- Amazon Fire HD 8 (2022, 12th Gen): a separate earlier entry that also uses “12th Gen” in Amazon’s specifications.
Use the year whenever you search, compare listings or buy accessories. A listing that says only “Fire HD 8 12th Gen” does not identify whether it is the 2022 or 2024 entry.

Display, size and everyday portability
Alexa Tablet 8: more screen in nearly the same compact category
The Alexa Tablet 8 uses an 8.7-inch IPS panel with 1340 × 800 resolution and a listed density of 180 pixels per inch. The extra 0.7 inch gives webpages, documents and split-view content more room than the Fire HD 8, while the 329g published weight keeps it in the small-tablet class.
Its 1340 × 800 resolution is still an 800-pixel-tall panel, so do not expect the fine detail of a premium high-resolution tablet. It is suited to reading, video, recipes, casual games and smart-home controls rather than precision creative work.
Fire HD 8: smaller panel, familiar compact format
The Fire HD 8 (2024) has an 8-inch IPS display at 1280 × 800. It is easier to use one-handed than a large tablet and fits the same basic roles: streaming, ebooks, web browsing, children’s entertainment and travel use. Amazon’s cited specifications do not provide a comparable weight for this model, so there is no evidence-based weight winner.

Performance and software are the biggest differences
Alexa Tablet 8 hardware
The MT8189 combines two performance-oriented A78 cores at 2.0GHz with six efficiency-oriented A55 cores at 2.0GHz. The announced device includes 4GB of RAM and runs Android 16, identified by Amazon as API level 36. This is a newer platform than the Fire HD 8’s software reference and should give the Alexa tablet a longer starting point for modern Android applications, although no independent benchmark or longevity test is available.
Fire HD 8 hardware
The 2024 Fire HD 8 uses the MT8169A, with six A55 cores at 2.0GHz, and is sold with either 3GB or 4GB of RAM. Amazon identifies the software as Fire OS 8 and lists Android 11/API level 30 as its Android version/API reference. Fire OS is Amazon’s tablet environment rather than standard Android as presented on the Alexa Tablet 8.
App availability and marketplace choice
Amazon says the Alexa Tablet 8 includes full Google Play Store access while also including Amazon applications. That makes it the more straightforward choice for someone whose must-have application is distributed through Google Play. Fire OS uses Amazon’s software and app environment. Because availability can vary by application, country and account, verify every essential app on the exact model before ordering instead of assuming that an Android app is available on both.
Operating-system version numbers alone do not guarantee future support. Developers decide which versions and device capabilities they support, and regional storefronts can differ.

Storage: cheap expansion versus larger built-in capacity
Alexa Tablet 8
Amazon lists 64GB and 128GB internal-storage options and does not list external-storage support. Select the capacity at purchase because you cannot plan on adding a microSD card later. The 128GB version is the safer choice if you keep downloaded video, large games, offline maps or many photos locally.
Fire HD 8 (2024)
The Fire HD 8 is listed in 32GB/3GB and 64GB/4GB configurations and supports microSD expansion up to 1TB. The lower-capacity model can therefore remain practical for a light user who is willing to add a compatible card. A card adds capacity for supported content, but it does not change the tablet’s processor, RAM or app performance.
When comparing prices, match the storage and RAM configuration. A low advertised starting price for a 32GB Fire HD 8 is not a like-for-like comparison with a 64GB Alexa Tablet 8.

- Like-New Amazon Fire HD 8 tablet is refurbished, tested, and certified to look and work like new and comes with the same limited warranty as a new device. Like-New Amazon devices may be packaged in generic Amazon-branded boxes.

Cameras and communication
The Alexa Tablet 8 has a 5MP front camera and an 8MP rear camera with autofocus. The Fire HD 8 has a 2MP front camera and a 5MP rear camera; Amazon’s cited specification does not list autofocus. On paper, the Alexa tablet is better equipped for video calls, scanning documents and occasional photos. These megapixel counts do not establish image quality in different lighting, and no hands-on camera test is available.

Alexa, Alexa+ and Show Mode
What the Alexa Tablet 8 adds
Alexa+ is built into the Alexa Tablet family. Amazon describes voice and touch access, live sessions and optional screen intelligence. In Amazon’s launch wording, “Alexa+ is built into the core of every tablet—from a personalized home screen to hands-free live sessions.” The tablet is therefore designed around Alexa as a primary interface rather than treating the assistant as an add-on.
Amazon also says on-screen intelligence features are off by default. You opt in to choose when Alexa listens, sees the screen and remembers. That setting is important if you want the tablet to provide contextual assistance but do not want those capabilities enabled continuously.
What the Fire HD 8 does not do
Some Fire tablets support hands-free Alexa, but that does not mean every Alexa function is available on every Fire model. Amazon’s current Show Mode support page explicitly lists “Fire HD 8 (12th Generation)” among the devices that are not compatible with Show Mode. Do not buy the 2024 Fire HD 8 expecting it to become an Echo Show-style always-on display through Show Mode.
Alexa functionality can also vary by model, software version, account and region. Check Amazon’s model-specific support information if hands-free commands are a deciding feature.
Battery claims and charging expectations
Amazon publishes “up to 14 hours of video playback” for the Alexa Tablet 8. For the Fire HD 8, Amazon publishes “up to 13 hours of battery life.” Those statements measure different use descriptions, so the one-hour difference is not a controlled comparison. Brightness, wireless use, audio volume, application load, downloads and battery age can materially change runtime.
Use the figures as manufacturer planning estimates, not a promise of continuous screen-on time. There is no independent battery test in the available material.

Price, launch timing and regional availability
Alexa Tablet 8 price context
Amazon announced a US starting price of $229.99 for the 4GB RAM/64GB storage model. The announcement gave October 13, 2026 as the purchase-availability date and October 14, 2026 as the scheduled US shipping date. Those are launch announcements, not a permanent price or delivery guarantee.

Choose the Alexa Tablet 8 if these priorities sound like you
- You need Google Play: Amazon says the tablet has full Google Play Store access alongside Amazon apps.
- You want the newer software baseline: Android 16/API level 36 is substantially newer than the Android 11/API level 30 reference Amazon lists for Fire OS 8.
- You use Alexa as a central interface: Alexa+ is integrated into the Alexa Tablet family, with voice and touch access and optional screen intelligence.
- You prefer a larger compact display: The 8.7-inch panel is larger than the Fire HD 8’s 8-inch screen.
- You make video calls or scan documents: Its 5MP front and 8MP autofocus rear cameras are higher specified than the Fire model’s cameras.
- You have a modern router: Wi-Fi 6 can be useful in a compatible network, while the Fire HD 8 lists dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi.
Accept the 64GB or 128GB internal-storage limit when making this choice; Amazon does not list expandable storage for this device.
Choose the Fire HD 8 (2024) if these priorities sound like you
- You want the lowest published entry price: Amazon’s September 2026 article places the lineup’s starting point at $99.99, subject to current listing changes.
- You need inexpensive local expansion: A microSD card of up to 1TB is listed as supported.
- You are comfortable with Fire OS: The tablet uses Amazon’s Fire OS 8 environment rather than the Alexa Tablet 8’s Android 16 and Google Play setup.
- Your use is light: Reading, streaming, browsing and basic household use may not justify paying for the newer platform if the Fire ecosystem contains the apps you need.
- You are comparing a specific sale configuration: Check whether the offer is 3GB/32GB or 4GB/64GB before treating it as equivalent to another tablet.
Do not select it on the assumption that Show Mode will turn it into an Echo Show-style display; Amazon explicitly excludes Fire HD 8 (12th Generation) from Show Mode.
A practical buying checklist
- Confirm the year: Make sure the listing says Fire HD 8 (2024) if that is the model you intend to compare. “12th Gen” alone is ambiguous because Amazon also lists a 2022 model with that generation label.
- Match memory and storage: Compare 4GB/64GB Alexa Tablet 8 pricing with the Fire HD 8 configuration you would actually buy, not only with the Fire lineup’s starting price.
- List must-have apps: Check each app in the relevant store and country. Do not infer compatibility solely from the word “Android.”
- Decide how you will store media: Choose 128GB Alexa Tablet 8 storage if you need substantial local files, or choose the Fire HD 8 if microSD expansion is more valuable.
- Check Alexa requirements: If you need Show Mode or a particular hands-free behavior, consult Amazon’s current support page for the exact model. Fire HD 8 (12th Gen) is not Show Mode compatible.
- Verify the live listing: Recheck price, stock, delivery date, warranty terms and regional configuration before payment.
- Plan accessories only after model confirmation: A microSD card is relevant to Fire HD 8 buyers, while the Alexa Tablet 8 has no external storage listed. Confirm tablet-specific case fit rather than assuming all 8-inch cases are interchangeable.
Important limits of this comparison
The specifications and prices here come from Amazon’s official device documentation, launch material and support information. No side-by-side benchmark, independent battery test, hands-on evaluation, retailer stock check or app-by-app compatibility audit was performed. The processor specifications indicate a newer design in the Alexa Tablet 8, but they are not a measured performance result. Likewise, the battery figures are not directly comparable test data.

Verdict
For most buyers who can spend $229.99, the Amazon Alexa Tablet 8 (2026) is the more capable compact tablet: Android 16, Google Play access, Wi-Fi 6, a larger 8.7-inch display, stronger listed cameras and built-in Alexa+ make it the better long-term platform on paper.
The Fire HD 8 (2024) remains the sensible budget option when the published $99.99 starting point and microSD support outweigh the benefits of newer software and hardware. Buy it with realistic expectations about Fire OS and Alexa: it is not compatible with Show Mode, and its advertised battery figure cannot be compared directly with the Alexa tablet’s video-playback claim.
