In November 2024, Amazon acknowledged reports that a small number of the original Kindle Colorsoft e-readers had a yellow band along the bottom of the display. The company directed affected customers to customer service; a follow-up statement reported that replacement or refund could be options. This was not an admission that every Colorsoft—or every Kindle—was defective.
What was the Kindle Colorsoft defect?
The reported problem was a yellow band along the bottom of the display on some Kindle Colorsoft units launched in 2024. On November 4, 2024, TechCrunch reported that Amazon had confirmed receiving complaints from a “small number” of customers. Amazon said it was looking into the reports and advised customers who noticed the band to contact customer service.
Amazon did not publish a count or percentage of affected devices in the cited statement. “Small number” is a qualitative description, not a measured defect rate. The reports also do not establish the cause of the yellow band.
What remedy did Amazon offer?
In a follow-up statement reported by Engadget on November 5, 2024, Amazon said customers who noticed the band could contact customer service for a replacement or refund. The company also said it was making adjustments intended to prevent the issue on new devices. Engadget reported that customers could continue using an affected reader while waiting for a replacement.

Is the yellow band on your Kindle Colorsoft a defect?
If you can clearly see a yellow band along the bottom of the display, especially when it appears in ordinary reading or screen views, contact Amazon support and describe what you see. The 2024 reports concerned a visible display issue, but they do not give a diagnostic test or explain how to distinguish it from normal display characteristics in every situation.

Does the 2026 Kindle Colorsoft still have the yellow band?
Amazon’s October 1, 2026 announcement describes a redesigned Kindle Colorsoft display using reverse printing technology and a revised display stack. The announcement does not say that these changes were made to fix the 2024 yellow-band issue, nor does it certify that current units are free of defects. It therefore does not establish whether the earlier issue occurs on 2026 models.

What should an affected owner do?
Base your next step on the visible condition of your own display and the options Amazon currently confirms for your device. If support offers a replacement, consider whether you can wait while continuing to use the reader; if you prefer not to keep it, ask whether a refund is available. If you are considering another Colorsoft, weigh its features and current local price, but do not treat the 2026 redesign as proof that the earlier fault has been eliminated.
