The Amazfit Balance Ultra has the larger, higher-resolution display and longer stated battery estimates; the 47 mm AMOLED Garmin fēnix 8 offers multi-band GPS and a broader set of mapping and training features. Those are manufacturer specifications, not results from a controlled head-to-head test. Your choice depends on the exact Garmin version, how you use GPS and the always-on display, and which health and navigation features matter to you.
At a glance: Balance Ultra vs 47 mm AMOLED fēnix 8
Garmin sells the fēnix 8 in multiple sizes and display configurations. The figures below refer specifically to its 47 mm AMOLED model, not every fēnix 8. Amazfit figures refer to the Balance Ultra. Which watch has the better display?
On listed size and resolution, the Balance Ultra has the advantage: its AMOLED panel measures 1.5 inches diagonally at 480 × 480 pixels, compared with the 47 mm AMOLED fēnix 8’s 1.4-inch, 454 × 454 display. Amazfit also lists peak brightness of up to 3,000 nits. These figures describe specifications, not a direct comparison of image quality or outdoor readability. Peak brightness alone does not prove which screen is easier to read in sunlight.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND GPS & OFFLINE MAPS: Navigate confidently with dual-band positioning and six satellite systems. Use offline maps, turn-by-turn navigation, and automatic rerouting to stay on track without your phone.
- 21-DAY BATTERY: Get up to 21 days of battery life on a single charge, and never worry about forgetting your charger on trips. Enjoy long battery life performance from work, to workouts, to weekend trips.
- AMOLED SCREEN & BUILT-IN FLASHLIGHT: A large 1.5" AMOLED screen protected by sapphire glass is easy to read in bright daylight or night. Stay safe and visible in low-light conditions with the built-in white or tactical red flashlight.
- NO SUBSCRIPTION APP: Health, recovery, and workout data is free to access in the included Zepp App. Track calories and protein goals.
- APP CONNECTIONS & HYROX TRAINING: Use fitness apps like Strava, TrainingPeaks, Intervals.ICU to share workouts. Improve HYROX training with built-in HYROX training plans and Virtual Pace simulations.
Make sure you are comparing the same fēnix 8 size and display type. Garmin’s lineup also includes other case sizes and Solar versions, so the 47 mm AMOLED figures do not apply to the whole series.
How do battery estimates compare?
Amazfit’s estimates vary by scenario: up to 30 days for typical use, 15 days for heavy use and 10 days with the always-on display (AOD). Its typical-use scenario includes continuous heart-rate monitoring every five minutes, sleep and stress monitoring, 200 wrist raises per day and message notifications. The company says actual results vary with settings and operating conditions. The Balance Ultra’s GPS estimates are up to 50 hours in accuracy GPS mode and up to 97 hours in power-saving GPS mode; the latter uses single-frequency GPS and disables AOD. See Amazfit’s scenario details.
For the 47 mm AMOLED fēnix 8, Garmin estimates up to 16 days in smartwatch mode with gesture and 7 days with AOD. Its GPS estimates are up to 47 hours in GPS-only mode or 35 hours when using all satellite systems plus multi-band. Garmin notes that battery life depends on enabled features, including wrist heart rate, phone notifications, GPS, internal sensors and connected sensors; see its battery information in the owner manual.
Rank #2
- STYLISH DESIGN, BRIGHT DISPLAY: The sleek stainless steel build blends classic style with workout durability, while the bright 1.32" AMOLED display keeps your data easy to read, even under bright sunlight.
- PRECISE HEART RATE AND SLEEP TRACKING: Amazfit's BioTracker technology tracks your heart rate and sleep data with accuracy that previous sensors just can't match.
- UP TO 10 DAYS OF BATTERY LIFE: With long battery life that lasts up to 10 days with typical use, nightly recharges are a thing of the past.
- FREE MAPS WITH TURN DIRECTIONS: Stay on-track with free downloadable maps, and get turn-by-turn guidance on-screen or via your Bluetooth headphones. Enjoy ski maps for global resorts, including guidance for cable cars, slopes, and more.
- FASTER AND MORE ACCURATE GPS TRACKING: 5 satellite positioning systems ensure fast GPS connection and accurate positioning whenever you're out running, walking, cycling or hiking.
The modes are not equivalent endurance tests: for example, the Garmin multi-band estimate and Amazfit accuracy GPS estimate describe different configurations. Treat each as a manufacturer estimate for its stated mode, not a guarantee for your routine or proof that one watch lasts longer under matching conditions. AOD, frequent GPS use, multi-band reception, music and sensor settings all affect what you should expect.
Which has better GPS and navigation?
Amazfit lists a dual-band, circularly polarized antenna and support for six satellite systems. Its advertised navigation tools include base and contour maps, ski-resort maps, point-of-interest search, route planning, turn-by-turn directions, round-trip routes and automatic rerouting.
Garmin specifies multi-band GPS on the 47 mm AMOLED listing and describes SatIQ for the series. Its launch materials also list turn-by-turn directions, course syncing, NextFork Map Guide, and an altimeter, barometer and compass. TopoActive maps are preloaded on Sapphire models; owners of non-Sapphire versions must download maps. Check the specific model and map coverage for the places you plan to use it.

These advertised features do not show which watch records a more accurate track. A fair accuracy comparison would need independent testing under matching routes, satellite settings, firmware and environmental conditions; no such result is established here.
How do the health and training features differ?
Amazfit Balance Ultra
Amazfit lists 24-hour heart-rate, blood-oxygen, stress and skin-temperature monitoring. Sleep features include stages such as REM, sleep HRV, breathing-quality information, naps and a sleep score. It also lists menstrual-cycle tracking, PAI assessment, high- and low-heart-rate and low-blood-oxygen reminders, and recovery or readiness features called HybridCharge and LifeLoad.
Garmin fēnix 8
Garmin lists heart rate, Pulse Ox, Body Battery, stress and advanced sleep features. Its fēnix 8 announcement describes training readiness, endurance score, hill score, VO₂ max, training status and HRV status. Garmin also offers ECG app compatibility, subject to limitations: the feature is region-limited, requires current Garmin Connect and watch software, is unavailable to people under 22 and is not intended to diagnose or monitor a medical condition. Garmin says Pulse Ox is not available in all countries. Check the launch announcement for those availability notes.

Health and training metrics are consumer wellness information, not a substitute for clinical assessment. Feature availability can vary by region, app and device software, and the presence of a feature does not establish equivalent measurement quality between watches.

The Balance Ultra has a listed 51.8 mm case diameter, 15.5 mm thickness including the sensor and a weight of 57 g without a strap. Its US product page lists Android 8.0 or later and iOS 17.0 or later. The package includes two 22 mm quick-release straps and a magnetic charging head, but no cable.

Bezel and lens materials vary by SKU: the listing describes stainless steel or titanium bezels and Gorilla Glass or sapphire lenses depending on version. Check the exact model’s dimensions and materials against your wrist and preferences.
Both watches list a 10 ATM water rating, but that rating should not be treated as a universal assurance for every water activity. Amazfit lists freediving and recreational scuba support; Garmin’s materials describe dive capability, while its manual identifies a 4 ATM dive rating under EN 13319. For diving, follow the exact-model manual and manufacturer guidance rather than relying on the general water rating.
Which one should you choose?
Choose the Balance Ultra if
- You prioritize the larger listed display, higher pixel count or Amazfit’s stated peak-brightness figure.
- You want its advertised battery estimates and are comfortable interpreting them by mode and usage scenario.
- You prefer its Zepp ecosystem, maps and route features, or the included two straps suit your needs.
- The Balance Ultra’s current local price and phone compatibility work for you. Amazfit’s US page listed it at $599.99 when accessed in 2026; check your market for current pricing and availability.
Choose the 47 mm AMOLED fēnix 8 if
- You specifically want Garmin’s multi-band GPS and mapping or navigation features.
- Garmin’s training metrics and app ecosystem better match how you train.
- You have confirmed that the map features, health functions and materials you need are available on your chosen SKU and in your region.
Price comparisons need care. Garmin announced the fēnix 8 in August 2024 with suggested retail prices starting at $999.99 across the lineup. That historical starting MSRP is not a verified current price for the 47 mm AMOLED model or a like-for-like street-price comparison. Check current local listings for the exact version before deciding.
