Yes—AltspaceVR is planned to return as a Steam title. SideQuest Ltd. lists a free-to-play Early Access release for October 2026, although no exact day has been announced. You will not need a VR headset: the new app is intended to work in desktop mode and on Android as well as with compatible VR hardware. For people who do use VR, the recommended specification specifically names Valve’s Steam Frame headset, while OpenXR, PCVR and Steam Link are listed as the minimum path.
What is actually confirmed about the Steam release?
The official Steam listing labels AltspaceVR “Coming Soon To Early Access” and gives October 2026 as the planned release month. It does not commit to a particular date, so a day-by-day launch announcement is still pending. SideQuest Ltd. is identified as both developer and publisher on the listing.
The game is not available on Steam yet. The October date and every Early Access milestone should therefore be treated as plans rather than delivered results.

Will AltspaceVR be free?
Yes. Steam classifies the app as Free To Play. In its Early Access FAQ, the developer says: “No. AltspaceVR is free to play and we currently plan for it to remain free after leaving Early Access.” That is a stated intention to keep the game free after launch, not a promise that every future feature or optional item will have identical terms.

Do you need a VR headset?
No. The listing says, “No VR headset? No problem. AltspaceVR works just fine on Desktop and Android without VR.” The planned release supports Meta Quest, Pico, Android and Windows PC, including compatible SteamVR/OpenXR headsets.
| How you join | What the listing says | What that means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Desktop or Android | Playable without VR | Lowest hardware barrier; you can enter the social world with a conventional screen and controls. |
| VR minimum path | OpenXR, PCVR and Steam Link | Designed for compatible VR setups using those runtimes or connection methods. |
| Recommended VR path | OpenXR and Steam Frame | Steam Frame is the headset named by the developer for the recommended configuration. |
Desktop and mobile access is important for a social game: friends can participate even when they do not own a headset, while VR users can choose tracked interaction and a more immersive view.

What does “Steam Frame recommended” mean?
Steam Frame appears on AltspaceVR’s recommended VR support line; it is not described as a mandatory device. The minimum line names OpenXR, PCVR and Steam Link, so a different headset that works with those technologies may still be a valid way to meet the baseline. The listing does not publish detailed frame-rate targets, graphics presets or a broader headset-performance matrix.

Valve describes Steam Frame as a SteamOS headset with 16GB of RAM, SteamVR-compatible controls and support for standalone play. That hardware description explains why it is a natural match for a Steam-native social VR application, but it does not establish that AltspaceVR will run better on Steam Frame than on every other compatible headset. Check current availability and regional specifications before buying any hardware.

What is included in Early Access?
The current core is intended to be playable rather than a closed technology demonstration. The listing identifies multiplayer Worlds, avatars, spatial voice and events as the central experience.
Features planned for expansion
- Friends and broader social connections
- Messaging
- Groups
- Event and World discovery
- Avatar customization
- Progression and rewards
- Moderation and safety tools
- Creator features
Because AltspaceVR is a social world, SideQuest says many important decisions cannot be made without an active community using it. That makes Early Access partly a live feedback period: systems for discovery, safety, creation and progression can change as people actually use them.

How long will Early Access last?
The Steam listing estimates around six to 12 months. The team also says it does not want to impose an artificial deadline. The estimate is consequently a target range, not a guaranteed full-release window. Feature scope, community feedback and development priorities can move the final transition.

Nothing in the listing promises that accounts, Worlds or other content from Microsoft’s former AltspaceVR service will migrate to this project. Treat the Steam release as a new product unless SideQuest publishes a specific migration policy.

Choosing a way to play
Choose desktop or Android when accessibility matters most
This route avoids the cost and setup of a headset and lets friends join from ordinary hardware. It is the practical starting point for checking whether the Worlds, events and voice experience suit you before investing in VR equipment.
Choose a minimum-compatible VR setup when you already own hardware
If your headset and computer support OpenXR, PCVR or Steam Link, the listing identifies those technologies as the minimum VR path. Confirm compatibility for your exact model and software stack when the app is released; the current page does not provide a complete device list.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Choose Steam Frame when you want Valve’s named recommendation
Steam Frame is the only physical headset called out on the recommended line. Its SteamOS design, SteamVR-compatible controls and standalone capability align with the platform, but buying one is optional because desktop, Android and other minimum-compatible VR routes remain available.
