The Altra Escalante Racer 2 is a low-stack, zero-drop road shoe aimed at speedwork and racing, but its firm, stiff platform makes it a better fit for some runners and efforts than others. Altra lists a 22 mm stack and 0 mm drop; independent reviewers measure slightly different figures and disagree about how flexible or fast the shoe feels.
What Altra says the Escalante Racer 2 is
Altra lists the Escalante Racer 2 for road running, speedwork, and road racing. Its current US product page specifies a 22 mm stack, 0 mm heel-to-toe drop, and 8.8 oz (249 g) listed weight for the men’s version. The shoe uses Altra EGO foam, a rubber outsole, an engineered-knit upper, neutral support, and the brand’s Original FootShape fit. Altra listed it at $145 in the US when its product page was accessed on October 7, 2026; price, color availability, and stock can change. Altra’s US product page has the current listing.
How the fit and ride may feel
Roomy toes, closer midfoot
Doctors of Running reviewers describe a wide toe box with a secure midfoot. RunRepeat likewise highlights the roomy forefoot. That does not guarantee a comfortable fit for every foot: individual fit reports differ, and the snugger midfoot may matter if you prefer a uniformly roomy shoe. Try it on if possible, ideally in the socks you run in.

Doctors of Running reviewers describe the Racer 2 as firmer and stiffer than the first Racer. Reviewer Andrea Myers writes, “The Altra Escalante Racer 2 is a low stack, zero drop shoe with a stiff platform and firm midsole.” Matt found it more suitable for moderate-to-uptempo running than the fastest efforts, while Myers felt the forefoot stiffness limited her preferred fast-running experience. RunRepeat reaches a more favorable conclusion about flexibility and comfort, recommending it for tempo sessions and short 5K or 10K races for runners who favor a minimalist approach. It also flags the airy knit as a poor choice for cold conditions and cautions that the low cushioning may not suit heavier runners. Escalante Racer 2 versus Escalante 4
If you are considering the Racer 2 alongside the Escalante 4 for longer runs, the available comparison points to a firmer, less forgiving Racer 2 and a more forgiving Escalante 4. RTINGS also describes the Racer 2’s upper as lighter and more breathable, with a slightly thinner, firmer midsole. That makes the Racer 2 the more race- and speed-oriented option on paper, while the Escalante 4 may be the more comfortable choice when forgiveness is the priority. Who should consider the Escalante Racer 2?
- Consider it if you want a low-stack, zero-drop road shoe with a broad toe box for speedwork, tempo running, or shorter races, and you prefer a firm ride.
