There is no single standalone service that replaces every part of The X Subscription. As of October 2026, new customers are directed to a bundle combining X, Grok, and Cursor. The practical alternative is to separate the jobs you actually do: keep X’s free service for social use, choose Claude Pro for general AI plus coding, use a dedicated coding assistant such as Cursor or GitHub Copilot, or retain an existing plan while you decide.
That timing matters. Older X Premium, Cursor, and SuperGrok pages still describe legacy subscriptions, while existing subscribers can keep those arrangements or opt into the combined account system. Compare your real usage, the shared allowance, third-party-model costs, and account-switching consequences rather than comparing headline prices alone.
The X subscription changed for new customers in October 2026
The current offer is called The X Subscription. Its official description says: “The X Subscription is one subscription that brings Grok, Cursor, and X together.” The overview was last updated October 12, 2026. New customers encounter this combined structure, while eligible people who already pay for X Premium, Cursor, or Grok can generally keep their existing plans unless they change or cancel them.

It changes how usage is allocated: Grok and Cursor draw from one weekly pool, and some account migrations cancel the component subscriptions being unified. Treat the current offer and the legacy products as separate products when doing the math.

Current bundle prices and what the tiers mean
| Tier | Monthly price |
|---|---|
| Free | $0 |
| Plus | $8 per month |
| Premium | $30 per month |
| Super | $100 per month |
| Ultra | $200 per month |
The published annual prices for paid tiers are $80 for Plus, $300 for Premium, $1,000 for Super, and $2,000 for Ultra. Prices are before sales tax where applicable, and the amount shown at checkout can depend on country, billing channel, and updated terms.
Grok Bot is included on Premium and higher tiers; Plus does not include it. The official documents describe the allowance as a shared pool covering Grok models across the included products. Top-ups can add usage after the included amount is consumed. These details make a lower-priced tier less attractive if you routinely run long Grok sessions or coding agents.
Do not mix the legacy X Premium table with the new bundle
The older X Premium help page still lists United States web prices of $3 per month for Basic, $8 per month for Premium, and $40 per month for Premium+. Those figures describe legacy X Premium tiers for existing or legacy billing, not the current new-customer bundle. The help page also shows substantial country variation, so a price quoted from it must be labeled as a US web price and dated to the page being consulted.

The right substitute depends on the component that creates value for you. Use this decision sequence before looking at plans:
- Social posting, reading, and communities: Standard X is available without buying The X Subscription through its free tier. If you want to leave X entirely, select another network based on the people, topics, moderation approach, and audience you need; current evidence does not establish one universal winner.
- General AI conversations and coding help: A standalone AI plan with an integrated coding tool is usually simpler than paying for a social bundle you do not use. Claude Pro is the clearest documented example in the available options.
- Frequent autonomous coding or repository work: A dedicated coding product lets you judge its limits and model charges independently. Cursor and GitHub Copilot fit this use case, with different billing mechanics.
- All three activities every week: The X Subscription may be convenient, but only if the shared weekly allowance covers both your Grok and Cursor habits and the social features matter enough to justify the bundle.
No published source provides a reliable conversion such as “one Cursor request equals two Grok prompts.” Usage-equivalence claims should therefore be treated as personal estimates, not a universal benchmark.

The shared Grok-and-Cursor allowance changes the cost calculation
Under The X Subscription, Grok and Cursor consume one shared weekly allowance. Heavy use in one product leaves less included usage for the other. For example, a week of large-context Grok analysis can reduce the capacity available to a coding agent later in the week, even though both products appear to be included in the same tier.
What counts against the pool
The official material says the pool covers Grok models used across the included products. It also says top-ups can add usage beyond the included amount. That means the advertised subscription price is a starting cost, not necessarily a monthly ceiling.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThird-party models offered inside Cursor, such as Claude or GPT models, are outside this shared Grok pool and are billed separately. A workflow that alternates between Grok and third-party models can therefore create two different meters: the shared allowance for included Grok usage and separate model or token charges for the external models.
A practical way to estimate your own spend
- List the tasks you performed in a typical four-week period: social use, short questions, long documents, code completion, debugging, and autonomous agent runs.
- Mark which tasks require Grok, which require Cursor, and which require a third-party model inside Cursor.
- Estimate your busiest week rather than your average week; the documented allowance is weekly, so a monthly average can hide a midweek exhaustion event.
- Record how often you would accept a top-up. If any top-up would be unacceptable, treat the included allowance as a hard cap and choose a plan that leaves headroom.
- Compare that result with a standalone AI subscription plus a coding subscription. Do not count social benefits as savings unless you would actually use them.
Claude Pro: the most direct AI-and-coding alternative
| Service | Published price | Relevant inclusion | What it does not replace |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Pro | $20 monthly, or $200 billed annually up front | Claude’s paid features and Claude Code, with additional usage and features compared with the free tier | X’s social network and its bundled Grok/Cursor account |
| Cursor Individual | $20 per month | Dedicated coding product | X social features and a general-purpose subscription outside coding |
| Cursor Teams | $40 per user per month | Team-oriented Cursor plan | X social features and the complete X bundle |
| GitHub Copilot | Current individual price not established here | Monthly AI Credit allowance; additional usage can be purchased after credits are exhausted | X social features and a general-purpose social-plus-AI bundle |
Claude Pro is the strongest documented choice when your priority is one general AI assistant that also supports software work. Claude Code is included, so you can keep conversational analysis and coding tasks under one standalone subscription. The annual option is billed up front, which lowers the effective monthly rate but commits the cash for the year.
Claude Pro does not supply X’s audience, timelines, posting tools, or social identity. It is therefore an alternative to the AI and coding portions, not a replacement for the social portion. Check the current Anthropic checkout terms before paying because usage limits and availability can change.

Cursor: a coding-first option with an availability caveat
Cursor’s published standalone page lists an Individual plan at $20 per month and a Teams plan at $40 per user per month. These are useful reference points for people who want a coding-focused product without paying for social features.
There is an important qualification for new customers: the October 2026 announcement says new customers start on the combined X Subscription, while existing Cursor subscribers may keep their current plan or switch. Confirm that a new standalone sign-up is available for your account, country, and billing channel before treating the listed Individual price as an actionable alternative.
Cursor is most suitable when your work is dominated by repository navigation, code generation, refactoring, and agent-style development. It does not include X’s social layer or a general-purpose bundle of Grok access. If you use third-party models inside Cursor, budget for their separate charges rather than assuming they are covered by any X-linked allowance.
GitHub Copilot: coding credits instead of a bundled pool
GitHub documents Copilot’s monthly AI Credit allowance and says users can buy additional usage after exhausting those credits. Billing depends on the model and the tokens used. The current individual plan price is not established in the available documentation, so consult GitHub’s live pricing page at checkout instead of relying on an old comparison.
Copilot makes sense when your primary need is assistance inside a coding workflow and you already work in GitHub’s ecosystem. Its credit-and-token model is different from The X Subscription’s shared weekly pool: you must watch monthly credits and the model-specific cost of extra requests. Copilot does not provide X social features or a general AI-and-social bundle.

Social alternatives: separate the network decision from the software decision
You do not need a paid bundle to keep using standard X. The announcement’s free tier means a reader who values only posting and reading can avoid paying for Grok or Cursor while retaining the network.
If your goal is to leave X, the available evidence does not establish a single best replacement. The choice depends on where your contacts are, the communities you follow, moderation policies, discovery tools, and whether you need a paid tier. Evaluate those factors directly; do not assume that an AI or coding subscription is also a social-network substitute.
What happens when an existing subscriber switches
Switching is optional for eligible existing subscribers. Your current plan, price, and features continue unless you choose to change or cancel them. Account unification has irreversible consequences, so read the confirmation screen carefully.
- Inventory every subscription. Identify X Premium, Cursor, Grok, and any related paid account, including whether each is billed on the web, through Apple, or through Google Play.
- Check the target tier and allowance. Decide whether your combined Grok-and-Cursor usage fits the weekly pool and whether Grok Bot is required; it starts at Premium and is not included in Plus.
- Review cancellation and proration. When selected accounts are unified, eligible Cursor, Grok, and paid X Premium subscriptions are canceled and unused time may be prorated. Confirm the displayed refund or credit before accepting.
- Handle store billing separately. A Cursor subscription billed through Apple requires cancellation through Apple. Apple or Google Play may also control refund and renewal steps, so a web cancellation alone may not stop store billing.
- Confirm the permanence warning. The official overview says completed unification is permanent and Support cannot undo it. Do not proceed while you are still comparing options.
- Verify after the change. Check the selected tier, renewal date, payment method, linked accounts, remaining allowance, and any third-party model billing before starting substantial work.
Keep screenshots or receipts of the confirmation page and prorated amount. They provide a record if the billing channel or renewal date later appears different from what you approved.

Compare the options by use case
| Your main need | Most relevant option | Why it fits | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Social use only | Free X tier | Retains the network without paying for AI or coding tools | No paid bundle benefits; another network may be preferable if you are leaving X |
| General AI plus coding, no social requirement | Claude Pro | One standalone service includes Claude Code and paid AI features | Does not replace X social features |
| Dedicated individual coding | Cursor Individual, subject to sign-up availability | Coding-first workflow with a published individual plan | Third-party model use can create separate charges; new-customer availability is changing |
| Team coding | Cursor Teams or a GitHub Copilot plan | Team-oriented Cursor billing or GitHub’s credit-based coding workflow | Neither replaces the social component; Copilot’s current price must be checked live |
| Regular use of X, Grok, and Cursor together | The X Subscription | One account and one shared subscription across the three products | Shared weekly allowance, possible top-ups, and permanent unification if you migrate |
Common mistakes that make an alternative look cheaper
Comparing a legacy price with a current bundle tier
A $3 or $8 legacy US web price for X Premium is not an apples-to-apples comparison with the current Plus, Premium, Super, or Ultra tiers. Label the edition, country, billing channel, and date for every figure.

Assuming included access means unlimited access
The shared pool is finite. Heavy use can trigger top-ups, and third-party models inside Cursor are separately billed. Model your busiest week and include a top-up contingency if you would continue working after the allowance runs out.
Ignoring annual prepayment
Annual billing can reduce the effective monthly rate, but it charges the full year up front. Compare the cash commitment with a monthly plan, especially when plan names and limits are changing.
Forgetting store subscriptions
Apple and Google Play can control renewals and refunds independently of a web account. Check each store before switching so you do not create overlapping subscriptions.
Assuming migration can be reversed
Account unification is permanent according to the official overview. Decide first, then confirm; Support cannot restore the former arrangement after completion.
A pre-purchase checklist
- Which component do you use most: social, general AI, or coding?
- Do you need Grok Bot, which is limited to Premium and higher bundle tiers?
- How much Grok and Cursor activity occurs in your busiest week?
- Will you use Claude or GPT inside Cursor and pay those model charges separately?
- Would a standalone AI-and-coding plan cover your work without social features?
- Is a dedicated coding plan available to your account as a new or existing customer?
- Can you accept annual prepayment and the applicable sales tax?
- Which account owns each subscription, and which billing channel renews it?
- Are you willing to make a permanent account unification?
Bottom line: choose the component, not the headline bundle
For social use alone, the free X tier avoids paying for tools you will not use. For general AI and coding without social features, Claude Pro is the clearest standalone option documented here. For coding-heavy work, Cursor or GitHub Copilot may be a better-shaped expense, provided you understand Cursor’s changing sign-up path and Copilot’s credit-and-token billing. The X Subscription is sensible only when you genuinely use X, Grok, and Cursor together and the shared weekly allowance is sufficient. Existing subscribers should keep their current plans while they compare, because unified accounts cannot be separated again.
