For most Indian homes, check fiber broadband first. If fiber does not reach the address, fixed-wireless services such as JioAirFiber may work. Satellite internet is most relevant for genuinely remote locations, but a regulatory authorization does not prove that a household can order a terminal or retail plan today. Compare exact address availability, total monthly and equipment cost, data rules, installation, latency needs and support before choosing.
What can replace Starlink in India?
There is no single nationwide replacement that is best for every address. Your practical shortlist depends on whether a wired line reaches the building, whether a fixed-wireless signal is available, and whether terrestrial networks are absent altogether.
| Option | Best fit | What is established | What you must verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fiber broadband | Urban and suburban homes where the cable network reaches the property | Airtel advertises plans up to 40 Mbps and 100 Mbps, with a router and installation included on the cited plan page. | Address eligibility, final price after tax, installation terms, speed at busy times and support response. |
| Fixed wireless (AirFiber) | Homes without a fiber drop but with a usable local wireless signal | JioAirFiber is a fixed-wireless home service and directs customers to check availability by city. | Whether your building is covered, signal quality, equipment, data or fair-use rules and total recurring cost. |
| Mobile data | Temporary access, backup connectivity or locations where a phone network is the only terrestrial option | A mobile hotspot or 4G/5G router can avoid a fixed installation. | Indoor signal, congestion, allowance, tethering rules, recurring recharge cost and power requirements. |
| Satellite | Remote, rural, coastal, border or mountainous sites that terrestrial networks cannot economically reach | India had several GMPCS authorizations in the government’s 29 January 2026 reply, but authorization is not proof of a retail launch. | Orderability at your address, spectrum assignment, gateway readiness, terminal price, tariff, installation and support. |
The comparison below uses provider and government material, not independent nationwide speed or latency tests. No reviewed source establishes that one option consistently outperforms the others across India.
Fiber broadband: the first check for a normal home
Fiber uses a physical cable from the provider’s network to your building or home. Where available, it generally offers a stable last mile, predictable indoor networking and lower propagation delay than a satellite link. Availability is highly local: a provider may serve one street, apartment block or building and not the next.

Airtel Xstream Fiber plans documented for 2026
Airtel’s official broadband page lists ₹499 per month for up to 40 Mbps and ₹799 per month for up to 100 Mbps. The advertised prices are before tax. The same page says a Wi-Fi router and installation are free with the service. These are provider-advertised plan details, not results from an independent speed test. Check the current address-specific offer before treating either figure as your payable bill: Airtel Xstream Fiber plans.
| Advertised plan | Maximum stated speed | Price qualification | Included equipment or work |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fiber plan 1 | Up to 40 Mbps | ₹499 per month, before tax, as shown on the provider page accessed in 2026 | Wi-Fi router and installation stated as free |
| Fiber plan 2 | Up to 100 Mbps | ₹799 per month, before tax, as shown on the provider page accessed in 2026 | Wi-Fi router and installation stated as free |
Do not infer that the headline speed is a guaranteed result on every device. Wi-Fi distance, wall construction, router placement, local congestion and the capability of your phone or computer can all reduce an observed speed.
Other fiber choices
JioFiber is also a home-broadband product. The material reviewed for this comparison does not establish a stable, address-level coverage map or a directly comparable current price. Use Jio’s address check and compare the final checkout amount rather than relying on a national availability assumption.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →When fiber is the sensible decision
- You need regular video calls, streaming, cloud backups or work VPN access.
- The building has an existing provider connection or the installer can reach it without unusual construction.
- You want a conventional indoor router and do not want an outdoor antenna or rooftop equipment.
- Your household values predictable support and a clear fault path over portability.
Fixed wireless: home internet without a fiber drop
Fixed wireless access connects a home gateway to a nearby mobile or radio network instead of running fiber all the way to the property. The gateway remains at a fixed address, so it is different from using a phone as a roaming hotspot.
JioAirFiber availability
Jio presents JioAirFiber as a fixed-wireless home internet product and asks customers to check availability in their city: JioAirFiber. A city-level presence does not guarantee service in every neighborhood or apartment. Before paying, ask the provider to confirm the exact building or pin code, the signal assessment, installation appointment and any indoor or outdoor equipment.

Airtel’s AirFiber listing
Airtel also lists Xstream AirFiber in its plan search results. The evidence used here is the Airtel fiber page, not a current AirFiber tariff or coverage document, so no AirFiber price or footprint is stated. Obtain the current terms directly from the provider before publishing or accepting an offer.
Questions to ask before installation
- Is the service available at the precise house, flat or office rather than only in the city?
- Will the installer need roof, balcony or exterior access, and who owns the mounted equipment?
- Is there a monthly data allowance, fair-use threshold or traffic-management policy?
- What happens when the local radio sector is congested?
- Are activation, deposit, relocation, cancellation or equipment-return charges payable?
Mobile data and 4G/5G routers as a practical fallback
A SIM in a phone, USB modem or cellular router can be useful while waiting for a fixed installation, as a backup during a fiber fault, or at a rental where you cannot authorize cabling. It is also the simplest test of whether a particular mobile network reaches your room.
Mobile service is not automatically cheaper for heavy household use. Check the allowance, tethering conditions, recharge cycle, signal inside the rooms where people work, and whether the router can run from a UPS during power cuts. A phone may show strong signal near a window while a router placed elsewhere performs poorly. Since allowances and prices vary by operator, circle and promotion, this comparison does not assign a national “cheapest” mobile plan.
Satellite internet: what India’s licensing record actually means
Satellite can cover places that are difficult to serve with terrestrial cable or cellular towers. The Department of Telecommunications describes satellite connectivity as useful for rural, underserved, unserved, remote, coastal, border and mountainous areas. It is therefore a solution for hard-to-reach sites, not automatically a cheaper substitute for urban fiber.
Authorizations reported on 29 January 2026
A Government of India reply dated 29 January 2026 said that the Department of Telecommunications had issued GMPCS Unified License authorization to OneWeb India Communications, Jio Satellite Communications and Starlink Satellite Communications. It said Amazon Kuiper’s application was under examination. The same reply recorded rejected applications from Nelco and Yotta and a withdrawn application from Connect4sure: Government of India satellite communication reply.

Those entries describe regulatory status at that date. They do not establish that a consumer can place an order, that a terminal is being sold, that a tariff is published, that a particular address is covered, or that installation is available. Treat “licensed” and “orderable” as separate questions.
Why a license is not the same as a working retail service
DoT’s GMPCS description says the service operates at national service-area level and requires a separate satellite earth-station gateway in India for each authorized satellite system. It also includes security and domestic traffic-routing conditions. Most importantly, DoT’s FAQ states: No. The License does not confer any right to assignment and use of spectrum, for which a separate specific frequency assignment shall be required from the WPC Wing of DoT.
Read the regulator’s full description at DoT GMPCS Service.
For a household, readiness therefore has several stages: authorization, spectrum assignment, gateway and network preparation, a retail terminal and plan, installation capability, and an address-level order. A provider can clear one stage without having completed all the others.
Business and remote-site satellite connectivity
Organizations with dispersed branches may investigate Commercial VSAT CUG rather than a consumer package. DoT describes small satellite terminals for private communication networks and gives banking, schools and retail chains as examples. It says a Commercial VSAT CUG licensee may provide internet service to subscribers after obtaining an ISP license. The page’s licensee listing, stated as of 10 June 2025, includes Hughes Communications India, Nelco, BSNL, Jio Satellite, OneWeb, Starlink and others: DoT Commercial VSAT CUG.
This is useful evidence for enterprise or private-network research, not proof that every listed organization sells a household plan. A business buyer should request a written proposal covering terminal ownership, installation, committed information rate, contention, data volume, public IP needs, service-level commitments, field support and regulatory responsibilities.

How to choose an alternative, step by step
- Check the exact address. Enter the full address or pin code into the provider’s availability tool. Ask an apartment manager or local installer whether the building is already wired. Do not substitute a national footprint statement for an address result. Airtel’s plan page and JioAirFiber’s availability flow are starting points: Airtel broadband and JioAirFiber.
- Identify the connection type. Confirm whether the offer is fiber, fixed wireless, mobile data or satellite. Ask where the last-mile equipment sits and whether the connection can be moved if you change homes.
- Calculate the first-year cost. Add the recurring bill, tax, activation, installation, router or terminal, deposit, shipping, mounting, backup power and any required return fee. Airtel’s cited fiber prices are before tax even though the page says router and installation are free.
- Read data terms. Look for a monthly cap, fair-use threshold, traffic shaping, hotspot restriction or overage charge. If the provider will not state the policy in writing, treat the advertised speed as insufficient information.
- Match performance to the workload. Video calls need consistent upstream and low delay; gaming is sensitive to latency and route stability; streaming mainly needs sustained throughput; basic browsing tolerates more variation. The reviewed sources contain no controlled, India-wide latency or reliability comparison, so reject claims of a universal performance winner without current local measurements.
- Confirm installation and support. Ask who performs the work, the earliest appointment, the fault-report channel, expected repair process, equipment replacement policy and service-continuity commitments. DoT’s GMPCS obligations include customer support, repair, fault rectification and continuity; request equivalent commitments from terrestrial providers.
- Test before cancelling your current connection. If possible, run a phone hotspot or temporary connection during the hours you work and stream. Keep an existing line until the new provider has completed installation and you have tested the rooms and devices that matter.
Decision guide by location and use
| Your situation | Start with | Reason | Main risk to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apartment or city home with wired providers | Fiber | Usually the simplest fixed setup when the building is already connected. | Building-level availability and final taxed bill. |
| Neighborhood has mobile coverage but no fiber at the property | Fixed wireless, then mobile-router backup | Can avoid a new cable drop while retaining a fixed home gateway. | Local radio congestion, signal path and data policy. |
| Farm, island, mountain, border or remote worksite without usable terrestrial service | Satellite feasibility assessment | Satellite is designed for difficult-to-reach areas. | Whether a retail service, spectrum authorization, terminal and installer are actually available. |
| Several branches, schools or dispersed facilities | Commercial VSAT or managed enterprise connectivity | Private-network and support requirements may exceed a household plan. | ISP licensing, service-level terms, terminal ownership and total project cost. |
| Temporary rental or backup requirement | Mobile data or a short-term fixed-wireless offer | Lower installation commitment and easier relocation. | Allowance exhaustion and indoor signal quality. |
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming a license guarantees a launch
Correct the assumption by checking for a consumer order page, an address check, a published tariff and an installation path. Keep the government authorization date attached to the claim; do not rewrite it as “available nationwide.”
Comparing pre-tax and tax-inclusive prices
Put all prices on the same basis. Airtel’s ₹499 and ₹799 figures are advertised before tax. A quote from another provider may already include tax or equipment, so compare the payable total and the one-time charges.
Using city coverage as proof of building coverage
Fixed wireless and fiber can stop at a street, building or floor. Obtain written confirmation for the exact address and ask what happens if the installer finds no usable signal or no spare port.
Choosing by download speed alone
Ask about upload speed, latency, data limits, contention, Wi-Fi equipment and fault repair. A plan with a larger headline number may be a worse fit for interactive work if delay or reliability is poor.
Recommended Free Tools
Ignoring power and mounting requirements
Fiber and wireless gateways need electricity; satellite terminals may also need an outdoor view, mounting hardware and protection from weather. Include a UPS or other backup if outages would stop work.
Calling an enterprise listing a consumer offer
Commercial VSAT CUG licensing supports private networks and regulated service models. It does not mean that every listed licensee accepts an individual household order.
What to verify before signing up
- Exact service address and installation feasibility.
- Advertised and minimum expected speeds, including upload.
- Tax-inclusive recurring bill and every one-time charge.
- Router, antenna or terminal ownership and replacement liability.
- Data cap, fair-use threshold, shaping and overage rules.
- Contract term, cancellation, relocation and equipment-return conditions.
- Support hours, escalation route and expected repair process.
- For satellite: spectrum status, Indian gateway readiness, retail orderability and local installer availability.
Bottom line for Indian households
Start with an address check for fiber. Airtel’s cited page provides concrete advertised examples—₹499 before tax for up to 40 Mbps and ₹799 before tax for up to 100 Mbps, with router and installation stated as free—while JioAirFiber is the fixed-wireless route to investigate where a fiber drop is unavailable. Use mobile data for portability or backup. Reserve satellite research for locations where terrestrial access genuinely falls short, and distinguish a DoT authorization from a service you can actually order, install and support at your home.
