The strongest alternatives to Skip and Instacart depend on your exact address, preferred stores, delivery slot and the complete checkout total. In Canada, compare retailer-direct services such as Walmart+ and PC Express with marketplace delivery through DoorDash. A retailer-direct order may offer different stores, pickup choices, substitutions and membership benefits than an order from the same retailer placed through a marketplace. Check your postal code, build the same basket in each available service and compare every charge before deciding.
Which alternatives are worth checking first?
For most Canadian shoppers, these are the practical alternatives to check locally:
- Walmart+: a direct Walmart ordering option combining grocery delivery, general-merchandise delivery, pickup and shipping benefits.
- PC Express: direct ordering for participating Loblaw-owned grocery banners, with delivery or pickup and an optional annual Pass.
- DoorDash grocery delivery: a marketplace that added Empire Company banners such as Sobeys, Safeway, IGA, FreshCo, Farm Boy and Longo’s, and also offers delivery from participating Walmart Supercentres.
- Local retailer services: regional grocers may provide their own pickup or delivery, often limited to stores close to your address.
These choices do not have universal Canadian coverage. A company announcement covering several provinces does not prove that your nearby store participates, that your building is eligible or that a convenient slot is available. Enter your complete address before treating any service as an option.
Retailer-direct ordering versus marketplace delivery
The most useful distinction is not the app’s name but who prepares and fulfills the order.

This framework follows the Competition Bureau’s grocery-market study from June 2023. The study lists examples such as Voilà, PC Express, Walmart Grocery, Costco Grocery, Instacart, SkipTheDishes and DoorDash, but it is a structural explanation rather than a current 2026 provider directory. Companies can also blend models over time.
Walmart+: direct Walmart delivery, pickup and shipping
Walmart Canada announced the Canadian arrival of Walmart+ on June 4, 2026. The published membership terms at that announcement were $8.97 per month or $89 per year. Walmart said members receive unlimited free same-day delivery from a store on orders over $35, discounted Express Delivery in two hours or less, free store pickup and free shipping without an order minimum on thousands of eligible Walmart.ca items. The announcement also included Crave Standard with Ads and described a 30-day membership trial.
Those are Walmart’s announced terms, not a guarantee for every address or order. Confirm the current local checkout, eligible items, delivery window and any remaining charges before subscribing. The $35 threshold applies to the announced same-day delivery benefit; Express and other fulfillment methods can have their own eligibility rules.
Walmart Canada said it had more than 400 stores nationwide. That corporate store count is not evidence that same-day delivery reaches every Canadian postal code. Delivery radius, store participation, capacity and building access still determine whether the service appears for you.

The quotation is Walmart’s description of its membership, not an independent assessment of value. Walmart+ is most promising when you regularly shop at a participating Walmart, can meet the relevant order threshold and will also use its non-grocery benefits. If you only need occasional small grocery orders, allocate the annual or monthly membership cost across the orders you realistically expect to place.

PC Express: Loblaw-banner pickup or delivery
PC Express is a retailer ordering channel for pickup or delivery at participating locations. Its website identifies participating Loblaw banners; the exact banner and store available to you depend on your address.
The PC Express site displayed an annual Pass price of $99.99 per year plus tax when the terms were reviewed. Treat that figure as time-sensitive and verify the current price before paying. The site describes Pass eligibility for PC Express orders of $30 or more.
No Frills’ PC Express Pass help information says the Pass is available only at locations offering PC Express and excludes Wholesale Club, Instacart and DoorDash orders. In practical terms, buying a Pass does not make a marketplace order qualify automatically. Choose the PC Express checkout itself when you want to use the Pass, and read the local order summary for delivery, pickup and other charges.
PC Express can be a good fit if your preferred participating banner is nearby and pickup is convenient. Pickup may remove a delivery charge, but it requires you to travel to the store and collect the order during the selected window.

DoorDash announced on April 27, 2026 that Empire Company Limited banners—including Sobeys, Safeway, IGA, FreshCo, Farm Boy and Longo’s—were available for on-demand delivery through DoorDash. DoorDash reported more than 1,000 stores across 10 provinces and 12 grocery banners, with nearly 10,000 items per Empire-family store on average.
DoorDash also reported an average of under 60 minutes from order to drop-off in Canada’s five largest cities. The company explicitly says delivery times vary and are not guaranteed. The figure is company-reported and applies to the stated cities and announcement period; it is not a promise for your store, suburb, apartment or rural route.

DoorDash and Walmart announced a separate Canadian partnership on November 26, 2024 covering more than 300 Walmart Supercentres across 10 provinces. DoorDash said a nearby Dasher shops the order. Walmart orders placed through DoorDash may be eligible for DashPass, subject to minimum subtotals and other terms, while service fees, taxes and gratuity may still apply.
Do not confuse a Walmart order through DoorDash with a direct Walmart order or with Walmart+. They can have different item availability, preparation, substitutions, delivery fees and membership treatment. Check the store shown in the DoorDash app and the final order summary before assuming a benefit carries over.
Why Instacart’s “free delivery” wording does not settle the price
Instacart is a useful comparison point because its own Canadian help information separates several charges. Delivery fees vary by retailer, delivery window and order total. Instacart+ members receive $0 delivery fees on eligible orders of at least $10 per retailer, but service fees still apply.
Service fees vary with factors including location and cart contents. Tips are separate from service fees, and Instacart says 100% of the tip goes to the shopper. A long-distance service fee may apply when the route is 15 minutes or more or includes a toll.
The same logic applies when comparing alternatives: “free delivery” describes only one line item. A lower-looking delivery fee can be offset by higher item prices, a service fee, a membership allocation, a tip, a small-order charge or taxes and deposits. Use the complete checkout total rather than a promotional headline.
Pickup can be the better alternative to delivery
Pickup is not a lesser version of delivery; it is a different trade-off. Retailer-direct pickup is often available where delivery slots are full and can avoid a delivery charge. It may also give you access to the retailer’s normal substitution and loyalty rules.

Pickup costs time and transport. It is unsuitable if you cannot reach the store, are managing an illness or disability, need delivery to a building with access restrictions or require an urgent order outside pickup hours. Compare pickup and delivery as separate options in the same local checkout rather than assuming one is always cheaper.
How to compare the same grocery basket
A matched basket is the only reliable way to identify the lowest total for your address. Use this process for Walmart+, PC Express, DoorDash, Instacart and any local retailer service that accepts your postal code.

- Select the same retailer and store where possible. Marketplace and direct channels may show different participating locations.
- Add an identical basket. Match brand, size, count and package type; otherwise a different item is not a meaningful price comparison.
- Choose comparable timing. A scheduled window, same-day slot and express delivery are different products with different capacity and charges.
- Record item prices and availability. Note products that are unavailable, replaced or offered at a different marketplace price.
- Add every charge. Include delivery, service, small-order or long-distance fees, membership cost allocated to this order, tip, taxes and any deposit.
- Review substitutions before submitting. Set preferences or reject substitutions for products where size, brand or dietary requirements matter.
- Compare the final payable amount. Save the checkout totals and the promised window; do not compare a pre-fee estimate with another service’s final total.
For a membership, divide the cost by the number of orders you genuinely expect to place during the membership period. A membership that saves delivery fees on frequent orders may cost more than pay-as-you-go delivery for occasional shoppers.
Substitutions and basket pricing can change the winner
Grocery delivery is not only a fee comparison. The final basket can change when an item is unavailable. A replacement may be a larger package, a different brand or a higher-priced product; refusing it may leave you without the ingredient you needed.
- Use “contact me,” “best match” or “do not substitute” settings according to the item, not one blanket rule for the entire cart.
- For allergy-sensitive, medical, religious or recipe-critical products, specify an acceptable replacement or prohibit substitution.
- Check whether the channel shows the replacement price before approval and whether an unavailable item is removed automatically.
- Compare the post-substitution receipt, not only the amount displayed when you first placed the order.
Retailer-direct and marketplace orders can differ in how inventory is displayed, who selects replacements and which price is charged. That is another reason to compare the exact channel you would actually use.

Same-day service is a local capacity question. A provider may operate in your province yet have no participating store nearby, no slot at the required time or no service to your building. Rural addresses, remote communities, campuses, condos with restricted entry and business addresses can have different eligibility from nearby houses.

Check these details in the order flow:
- Whether your postal code is accepted for delivery and for pickup.
- Which store will fulfill the order and whether the store is open during the proposed window.
- The minimum subtotal for the selected delivery method or membership benefit.
- Whether an express slot is genuinely available or only advertised in general service descriptions.
- Whether the estimated time is a promise, a range or an average reported by the company.
- Whether fees change when you move the order to a different window.
DoorDash’s under-60-minute figure is an average reported for the five largest Canadian cities, and DoorDash says times vary. Walmart’s same-day and express benefits have eligibility conditions. PC Express Pass benefits apply only to eligible PC Express orders. None of these statements guarantees a particular delivery time at your address.
Which service model fits your situation?
You shop mostly at Walmart
Start with the direct Walmart checkout and compare its local delivery and pickup totals. Walmart+ is worth calculating when you will use the published benefits often enough to recover the membership cost and your orders meet the applicable conditions.
You prefer Loblaw-owned banners
Check PC Express at the specific participating store. Compare delivery with pickup, and remember that the PC Express Pass does not apply to Wholesale Club, Instacart or DoorDash orders.
You need a fast order from an Empire banner
Check DoorDash for the nearby Sobeys, Safeway, IGA, FreshCo, Farm Boy or Longo’s location. Treat the displayed slot and fee as the only reliable answer for your address; the company’s network and average timing do not guarantee your result.
You want the broadest marketplace search
Compare Instacart and DoorDash against retailer-direct options using the same basket. Marketplace breadth can be useful, but the convenience may come with different item prices, service fees, substitution handling and membership rules.
You can collect the order yourself
Include retailer pickup in the comparison. It may be the least expensive or most available option, but only if the travel and waiting time work for you.
Common mistakes that make comparisons misleading
- Choosing from a national store count: a corporate figure does not establish delivery to your postal code.
- Comparing different baskets: a cheaper total may simply contain smaller packages or fewer items.
- Stopping at “free delivery”: service fees, tips, taxes, deposits and membership costs can remain.
- Assuming a membership transfers: direct-retailer passes and marketplace memberships have separate eligibility rules.
- Treating an average as a guarantee: reported delivery speeds vary by city, store capacity, traffic and demand.
- Ignoring pickup: pickup can change the total and availability, but it is not suitable for every shopper.
- Accepting substitutions without checking: the replacement can alter both the basket and the final price.
Bottom line
There is no single Canadian winner between Skip, Instacart and their alternatives. Use retailer-direct ordering when your preferred store offers a convenient local service and its membership or pickup economics work for you. Use DoorDash or another marketplace when it offers the store and timing you need. Then compare the same basket at checkout, including every fee, threshold, tip, substitution and membership cost. That local, all-in total—not a headline delivery promotion—is the dependable basis for choosing.
