Shape-sensing sheets are only one way to recover how a soft object bends, stretches, twists, or moves. Practical alternatives include robot-specific strain models, external cameras, surface-traversing probes, embedded fiber optics, and newer fully soft optical-waveguide arrays; the right choice depends on access, required coverage, calibration, and whether the object has a stable mechanical model.

What a shape-sensing sheet does

Shah and colleagues’ 2023 work on stretchable shape-sensing (S3) sheets provides the baseline for comparison. The sheet combines orientation measurements with strain measurements to estimate a three-dimensional surface contour. Its reconstruction does not assume the host robot’s geometry or material properties, which is important for soft objects whose shape changes substantially or whose construction is difficult to model.

In the reported experiments, an 80 mm sheet achieved approximately 3 mm shape-estimation accuracy. The authors demonstrated it on a silicone, three-chamber pneumatic bladder and detected sheet stretch up to 30%. The prototype used acrylic adhesive, biphasic gallium-indium circuits, and commercial integrated circuits that supplied orientation and strain data. Those figures describe that study’s geometries and operating conditions; they are not a universal accuracy or strain limit for every S3 installation.

An S3 sheet is therefore a modular, surface-attached sensing layer. Alternatives move the sensing hardware elsewhere, replace the surface reconstruction method, or embed a different sensing technology in the object.

Approach Where sensing occurs How motion is reconstructed Evidence and practical constraint
Model-based strain sensing Flexible strain sensors attached to or built into the robot An analytical or learned, robot-specific model maps strain changes to deformation Established soft-robot proprioception category; performance can degrade during buckling or material-property changes, and it is unsuitable when no well-defined resting shape exists (2025 review)
External vision Cameras outside the object Image processing tracks the visible object and estimates its shape No stretchable sheet is attached, but the setup needs camera access and can be hindered by occlusion or restricted placement (2025 review)
Surface-traversing measurement A small cart or probe physically moving over the surface The device records surface orientations and distances while it travels Can reconstruct a strained surface, but requires physical access and an external traversing device (2025 review)
Fiber-optic shape sensing A multicore optical fiber integrated into an actuator Changes along the fiber are interpreted as actuator shape and position A 2019 pilot reported submillimeter position feedback and sensing of shape, environmental shapes, collision locations, and material stiffness; the demonstration was tied to a particular fiber-reinforced actuator
Optical-waveguide-array surface A fully soft optical sensing surface Optical waveguide arrays encode deformation across the surface A 2026 paper demonstrated surface-shape reconstruction; reported applications include bending and twisting feedback for physical therapy, virtual reality, and gaming. Commercial availability and product-level benchmarks are not established

These methods should not be ranked by the isolated accuracy numbers reported for different experiments. The S3 result of approximately 3 mm on an 80 mm sheet and the fiber-optic pilot’s submillimeter position feedback came from different systems, test objects, and measurement tasks. No cited source provides a controlled, head-to-head benchmark across all of the approaches.

1. Model-based strain sensing

How it works

Flexible strain sensors measure how selected parts of a robot lengthen or contract relative to a nominal state. An analytical model based on the robot’s mechanics, or a learned model trained on calibration data, then converts those measurements into bending, position, or other deformation variables. The model supplies the missing relationship between local strain and the complete robot shape.

This approach is a standard category of soft-robot proprioception because the sensing elements can be thin and conformal while computation handles the difficult shape inference. It is most defensible when the robot has a repeatable construction, a known resting geometry, and deformation modes that remain within the range represented by the model.

Where it differs from an S3 sheet

  • Model dependence: the mapping is robot-specific rather than deliberately independent of host geometry and material properties.
  • Calibration burden: the model must represent the actual sensor placement, nominal state, and mechanical response.
  • Coverage: a small number of strain paths may estimate a centerline or selected deformation variables rather than a complete surface contour.
  • Integration: strain gauges or flexible traces can be lighter than a full orientation-and-strain sheet, but they still must survive repeated stretching and bonding.

When it becomes unreliable

The 2025 review by Woodman and Kramer-Bottiglio notes that model-based performance can suffer during buckling or when material properties change. Buckling introduces shape states that may not be represented by a simple nominal-shape model. Aging, temperature, pressure, manufacturing variation, or fluid changes can also alter the mechanical relationship that the model assumes. If the robot does not have a well-defined resting shape, the review considers this approach unsuitable rather than merely difficult to calibrate.

Choose model-based strain sensing when the object is a repeatable mechanism and the engineering team can maintain its model. Avoid treating it as a model-free replacement for a sheet on an unconstrained, highly changing soft surface.

2. External vision

How it works

Cameras observe the object from outside. Image processing then extracts a silhouette, tracked features, markers, or other visual cues and estimates the object’s changing shape. Because the sensors are not attached to the soft body, this method avoids stretchable wiring, adhesive fatigue, and changes to the object’s mass or compliance.

Advantages

  • No sensor sheet has to stretch with the object.
  • The same camera system can observe multiple objects or a large workspace.
  • Hardware on the object can be minimal when the surface is already visually distinctive.
  • Calibration can be performed in the workspace rather than by embedding electronics in a soft material.

Constraints

Vision requires an unobstructed external view. Occlusion, self-contact, transparent or reflective materials, poor lighting, and limited camera placement can remove the visual information needed for reconstruction. The cited review identifies these access and occlusion issues but does not quantify a universal distance, frame rate, accuracy, or minimum lighting level.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Vision is a strong choice when the object is visible and the experiment can dedicate space to cameras. It is less suitable when the object operates inside a closed device, behind another structure, or in a view that disappears during contact. In those cases, an attached or embedded sensor can provide information that an external camera cannot see.

3. Surface-traversing measurement

Operating principle

A small hand cart or similar device rolls across the soft surface. It records orientations and distances along its path, and those measurements are used to reconstruct the surface, including deformation under strain. Unlike a permanently attached sheet, the sensing hardware is external and can be reused on different objects.

Trade-offs

  • Physical access: the cart must contact the surface and have a route over the area of interest.
  • Measurement mode: the result is acquired as the device traverses the object, not as a permanently attached continuous sensor.
  • External equipment: the cart, its orientation and distance sensors, and the procedure for moving it become part of the measurement system.
  • Object disturbance: contact may load a very soft surface, so the measurement setup must be compatible with the deformation being studied.

This method is useful when a researcher needs a geometric reconstruction but cannot or does not want to bond electronics to the object. It is a poor fit for rapid autonomous motion, inaccessible surfaces, or applications that require shape data while the object is moving without an external operator or mechanism.

4. Fiber-optic shape sensing

What the pilot demonstrated

Galloway and colleagues reported a 2019 pilot in which a multicore fiber was integrated into a fiber-reinforced soft actuator. The fiber provided shape information and submillimeter position feedback in that experimental system. The study also reported sensing of environmental shapes, collision locations, and material stiffness.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Optical fibers are attractive for soft robotics because the sensing element can run along an actuator while the readout electronics remain outside the deforming region. A fiber can provide information along a long, narrow path without placing electrical conductors throughout the elastomer.

Why it is not a drop-in sheet replacement

The pilot integrated the fiber into a particular actuator construction. Its results establish feasibility for that architecture, not a universal, model-free surface sensor. A single fiber path primarily samples the geometry around that path; it does not automatically provide the two-dimensional surface coverage of a sheet. Packaging, routing, optical interrogation, and attachment must be designed for the actuator’s reinforcement and expected bending.

Choose fiber optics when the object has a defined actuator or backbone along which a fiber can be embedded, and when high positional precision along that structure matters. Do not use the pilot’s submillimeter figure as a direct comparison with the S3 sheet’s approximately 3 mm surface-estimation result.

5. Optical-waveguide-array surfaces

What is new about this direction

Yu and colleagues’ 2026 paper describes a fully soft sensing surface that reconstructs shape through arrays of optical waveguides. MIT News reported bending and twisting tracking and discussed possible uses in physical therapy, virtual reality, and gaming. The concept retains the broad surface coverage associated with a sheet while replacing conventional orientation-and-strain electronics with soft optical structures.

Current evidence and limits

The cited work establishes a research approach and demonstrates surface-shape reconstruction. It does not establish commercial availability, a standard product, a universal accuracy specification, or a controlled comparison against S3 sheets, cameras, strain models, or fiber optics. The proposed application areas should therefore be read as potential uses rather than validated product deployments.

For a new prototype, optical-waveguide arrays are most relevant when fully soft construction and distributed surface sensing are priorities. They are less practical when the project needs an immediately purchasable replacement, because the cited record does not identify a ready-made commercial system.

How to choose among the alternatives

Start with the measurement question

  1. Need a complete surface contour? Favor a surface method such as an S3 sheet, external vision, a traversing measurement device, or an optical-waveguide array. A single strain path or fiber may not cover the entire surface.
  2. Need the pose of a known actuator or backbone? Model-based strain sensing or an embedded fiber can be more direct than reconstructing every surface point.
  3. Need measurements during operation with no physical contact? External vision is the obvious category, provided the object remains visible.
  4. Need measurements inside an enclosure or behind an obstruction? Prefer attached or embedded sensing, because cameras and a traversing cart may lack access.
  5. Does the object have a stable nominal shape? If yes, a strain model may be viable. If no, consider model-independent surface sensing, vision, or a sensing architecture designed for the object’s changing geometry.
  6. Is the target a research prototype or a deployable product? The optical-waveguide-array work is a newer research direction; the cited sources do not establish a commercial replacement. Plan integration and validation accordingly.

Compare the engineering axes

Decision axis Questions to answer Methods favored when the answer is positive
Attachment Can adhesive, embedded fibers, or flexible traces remain bonded through the full motion cycle? Attached strain sensors, fiber optics, S3 sheets, optical-waveguide surfaces
External access Can cameras see the object, or can a cart reach the surface? Vision or surface-traversing measurement
Model availability Is there a repeatable resting shape and stable material response? Model-based strain sensing
Spatial coverage Do you need a surface map or only a centerline/actuator pose? Surface sheets, vision, and waveguide arrays for broad coverage; fibers and strain paths for defined structures
Evidence maturity Is the method supported by a review, a pilot, or a newer single study? Use the 2025 review for category-level limits, the 2019 fiber study as a pilot, and the 2026 waveguide work as emerging evidence

Validation steps before relying on any method

Regardless of the sensor choice, validate the complete measurement chain on the actual soft object rather than transferring a headline number from another experiment.

  1. Define the output: specify whether you need surface coordinates, actuator position, collision location, bending angle, twist, or only a deformation class.
  2. Map the observable region: record which surfaces a camera can see, which paths a cart can reach, or where an attached fiber or strain sensor will be installed.
  3. Record the nominal state: this is essential for model-based strain sensing and useful for detecting drift in every attached system.
  4. Test the full deformation range: include stretching, bending, twisting, buckling, contact, and pressure states that occur in operation. The S3 study’s 30% stretch demonstration is a reference point for that prototype, not a guaranteed limit for another design.
  5. Check material and environmental changes: repeat measurements after temperature, pressure, loading, or material changes that could invalidate a robot-specific model.
  6. Use an independent reference: compare reconstructed shape with a separate measurement method during validation. Do not call two sensors a benchmark merely because both report a distance.
  7. Report conditions with every number: include object dimensions, sensor placement, strain, motion speed, calibration procedure, and whether the value came from a pilot or a repeated evaluation.

What is and is not established by current evidence

The cited publications support a set of complementary options, not a universal winner. The S3 study demonstrates a modular sheet that combines orientation and stretch sensing without assuming host geometry or material properties. The 2025 review documents model-based strain sensing, vision, and surface-traversing measurement as established categories with distinct access and modeling requirements. The 2019 fiber-optic paper demonstrates high-precision feedback in one integrated soft actuator. The 2026 optical-waveguide work extends fully soft surface sensing into a newer optical architecture.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

No cited source establishes a ready-made commercial replacement for an S3 sheet or a head-to-head test that ranks all five approaches by accuracy, cost, durability, latency, or installation time. A MEMS inertial-measurement-unit breakout board may be useful as a component in an orientation-sensing prototype, but it is not a complete alternative sheet, and the cited sources do not identify a specific compatible retail model or current availability.

Bottom-line selection guide

  • Choose model-based strain sensing for repeatable robots with a known nominal shape and a maintainable mechanical model.
  • Choose external vision when the object is visible and you want to avoid attaching a sensor.
  • Choose surface-traversing measurement for accessible surfaces where a reusable, contact-based scan is acceptable.
  • Choose fiber optics for a defined actuator or backbone that benefits from precise embedded shape and position feedback.
  • Investigate optical-waveguide arrays when fully soft, distributed surface sensing is the research goal and you can accept an emerging technology path.
