If you want less exposure to a handful of AI companies, the practical alternatives are a diversified broad-market ETF or index fund, bonds or Treasury securities, and cash equivalents. The right combination depends on when you need the money, how much volatility you can tolerate, your goals, taxes, fees, and liquidity needs. Diversification can reduce concentration risk, but it cannot prevent losses when markets fall.

A sensible decision is not “AI stocks versus one replacement.” It is choosing how much of your portfolio belongs in diversified growth assets, income-oriented assets, and readily available reserves.

Why move beyond individual AI stocks?

Owning shares of a few companies tied to artificial-intelligence spending creates single-company and sector concentration. A disappointing earnings report, product delay, regulation, supply-chain problem, or change in investor expectations can affect several holdings at once. Even if the long-term AI theme remains important, an individual stock can perform poorly for company-specific reasons.

Replacing a concentrated position with one narrowly focused technology or AI fund may not solve the problem. The SEC’s Investor.gov guidance notes that a mutual fund or ETF does not necessarily provide diversification when it is narrowly focused, such as on one industry sector. Review the fund’s index methodology, sector weights, geographic exposure, and largest holdings rather than relying on the word “ETF” or “fund” in its name.

Broader diversification spreads ownership across many companies and industries. Bonds and cash add different sources of risk and return, although neither is risk-free. The objective is to match the portfolio to your financial job: long-term growth, income, capital preservation, or near-term spending.

How the main alternatives differ

Option What it owns Typical role Main risks Liquidity and return profile
Broad-market ETF or index fund A large set of companies across sectors, often weighted by market value Long-term growth and equity diversification Market declines, valuation risk, tracking error, and possible concentration in the largest companies Usually tradable on market days; higher growth potential than bonds or cash, with larger short-term swings
Investment-grade bonds or bond funds Government, municipal, or corporate debt, depending on the fund or security Income, diversification from stocks, and a potentially steadier value path Interest-rate, credit, inflation, liquidity, and call risk; bond funds can lose money Many securities can be sold before maturity, but prices vary; returns are generally more modest than stocks
Treasury securities Debt issued by the U.S. Treasury, including Treasury bills Lower-credit-risk income or a place for money with a defined maturity Interest-rate and inflation risk; selling before maturity can produce a gain or loss Marketable issues are generally liquid; maturity value applies only when held to maturity and subject to the security’s terms
Insured savings deposits or CDs Bank deposits, with insurance subject to applicable limits and rules Principal stability and near-term savings Inflation, reinvestment, early-withdrawal, and institution-specific terms Highly accessible for savings; CDs may restrict access or charge an early-withdrawal penalty
Money-market fund Short-term debt and cash-like instruments held in a mutual fund Liquidity and relatively low volatility within an investment account It is not a bank deposit, is not guaranteed like insured deposits, and can lose value Generally easy to transact, subject to fund rules and market conditions
Target-date fund A diversified mix of stock and bond funds managed toward a target year One-fund retirement allocation and automatic rebalancing Market risk, glide-path differences, fees, and the possibility that the allocation does not fit your retirement date or risk tolerance Convenient and diversified; the mix changes over time rather than remaining fixed

These are general characteristics, not guarantees. A broad equity fund still falls in a stock-market decline. A bond fund can lose value when interest rates rise or credit conditions deteriorate. Cash can preserve its dollar balance while losing purchasing power to inflation.

Broad-market ETFs and index funds

What “broad-market” should mean

A broad-market fund normally tracks an index covering many companies and sectors rather than a single theme. The exact breadth varies. Some funds cover a national stock market; others include developed and emerging international markets, or divide exposure among large, mid-sized, and small companies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the fund’s prospectus and current holdings for:

  • The index the fund follows and how constituents are selected.
  • The number of holdings and the percentage represented by the largest 10 holdings.
  • Sector, country, and currency exposure.
  • Whether the fund is market-capitalization weighted, equal weighted, or uses another method.
  • The expense ratio, trading spread, turnover, and any transaction or account fees.
  • Whether the fund distributes dividends and capital gains in a taxable account.

Why this can be a useful AI-stock alternative

A broad fund lets you retain exposure to companies that may benefit from technological growth without making the outcome of a few AI-related businesses the central portfolio bet. If one company falters, its weight is limited relative to owning that company directly. You also gain exposure to sectors such as health care, financials, industrials, consumer businesses, energy, and utilities, depending on the index.

Risks that remain

Diversification does not eliminate equity risk. Broad indexes can decline sharply during recessions, financial stress, or a broad valuation reset. Market-capitalization weighting can also leave a fund heavily influenced by its largest companies, including technology companies. Review the top holdings and sector weights periodically instead of assuming that “broad” means evenly distributed.

ETF versus mutual fund mechanics

ETFs trade throughout the day at market prices, which can be above or below the value of their underlying holdings. Mutual funds are generally priced once each business day at their net asset value. Both structures can provide diversified exposure; the more important questions are the underlying index, costs, tax treatment, and how the fund fits your account.

Bonds and Treasury securities

What bonds contribute

Bonds are loans to governments, municipalities, or companies. In exchange for lending money, the investor receives interest under the security’s terms and repayment of principal at maturity, subject to the issuer’s ability to pay. Official investor guidance generally describes bonds as less volatile than stocks and as offering more modest returns, but they still carry meaningful risks.

Interest-rate risk

Existing bond prices usually fall when market interest rates rise, because newer bonds offer higher rates. Prices usually rise when rates fall. A bond held to maturity can return its stated principal if the issuer pays as promised, but a bond fund has no single maturity date and continually replaces holdings. Selling an individual bond before maturity can also produce a gain or loss.

Credit, call, inflation, and liquidity risks

  • Credit risk: A corporate or municipal issuer may pay late, default, or be downgraded.
  • Call risk: An issuer may repay a callable bond early, often when rates fall, forcing reinvestment at a lower rate.
  • Inflation risk: Interest and principal may buy less in the future if prices rise faster than the investment’s return.
  • Liquidity risk: A security may be difficult or expensive to sell at the desired price.

Bond funds versus individual bonds

A bond fund provides diversification across many issuers and maturities and makes reinvestment automatic. Its share price changes every day, and it can lose money, including a fund that holds Treasury securities. An individual bond has a stated maturity and payment schedule, but you must evaluate the issuer, maturity, price, yield, and trading liquidity yourself.

Treasury bills and other government securities

Treasury bills are short-term U.S. government obligations. They can be useful for money needed on a known schedule, but their value and reinvestment outcome depend on maturity and prevailing rates. A Treasury security sold before maturity can be worth more or less than its purchase price. Government backing addresses the issuer’s payment obligation; it does not protect you from market-price changes, inflation, or every type of loss in a fund that owns Treasuries.

Cash and cash equivalents

When cash is the appropriate alternative

Cash is suited to emergency reserves, planned spending, and goals with a short time horizon where a market decline would be unacceptable. Savings deposits, certificates of deposit, Treasury bills, money-market deposit accounts, and money-market funds are commonly grouped as cash and cash equivalents. The SEC describes these as the safest of the three major asset categories, while also noting that they offer the lowest return potential.

Deposit accounts and CDs

An insured bank savings account can provide access and principal protection within applicable insurance limits. A CD generally trades some access for a stated term and rate; withdrawing early may incur a penalty. Confirm the institution, insurance coverage, maturity date, renewal instructions, and any minimum balance before committing funds.

Money-market deposits versus money-market funds

A money-market deposit account is a bank deposit with its own insurance and withdrawal rules. A money-market fund is an investment company holding short-term instruments. It is not a bank deposit and is not risk-free. Do not treat the two labels as interchangeable when deciding where to keep emergency cash.

The inflation trade-off

Cash can be stable in nominal dollars while losing real purchasing power. If your goal is decades away, holding all assets in cash may make it difficult for growth to outpace inflation. The appropriate cash amount is therefore linked to upcoming expenses and your ability to tolerate investment volatility, not simply to fear of market declines.

Target-date funds: a one-fund option

A target-date fund holds a diversified collection of stock and bond funds and is labeled for an approximate year, often a retirement year. The SEC’s Target Date Funds Investor Bulletin, published March 25, 2025, explains that these funds typically shift from investing more in stock funds to holding more bond funds as the target date approaches.

What the glide path does

The glide path is the schedule for changing the stock-bond mix. Two funds with the same target year can have different allocations before retirement, at the target date, and after the target date. Some become more conservative at the target date; others continue changing afterward. Read the fund’s prospectus and glide-path chart rather than comparing the year alone.

Advantages

  • Automatic diversification across underlying funds.
  • Professional rebalancing as the target year gets closer.
  • One holding can simplify contributions and account maintenance.

Limitations

  • The fund’s risk level may not match your other accounts, pension, Social Security expectations, or spending plan.
  • Underlying-fund expenses and the target-date fund’s own expenses reduce returns.
  • The target year is not a guarantee of a particular balance or income level.
  • Changing the date to obtain a more conservative label does not replace reviewing the actual allocation.

How to choose an allocation without using a universal formula

There is no single percentage split that is suitable for everyone. Use the following sequence to make the decision tied to your circumstances.

  1. Separate the time horizons. List money needed within the next few months, money needed in the next several years, and money intended for long-term growth. Short-term spending generally needs more liquidity and less exposure to market-price losses.
  2. Define the job of each account. An emergency reserve has a different purpose from a retirement account, a home down payment, or a child’s education fund. Give each goal a deadline and a required level of certainty.
  3. Test your risk tolerance against a real decline. Ask whether you could continue contributing and avoid selling after a substantial stock-market drop. If not, a portfolio dominated by equities may be unsuitable even if its long-run growth potential is attractive.
  4. Choose the diversification level. For equity exposure, inspect broad-market coverage, top holdings, sector weights, and international exposure. Do not assume that several narrowly focused funds add up to a diversified portfolio.
  5. Assign the stabilizing assets. Use bonds for the amount of volatility and income diversification you can accept, and cash for expenses or reserves that must remain available. Match bond maturity and duration to the time when the money is needed.
  6. Account for taxes and fees. Compare expense ratios, trading costs, fund turnover, taxable distributions, interest taxation, and the tax treatment of the account itself. A lower-cost product is not automatically better if it does not meet the goal or has unsuitable risk.
  7. Write a rebalancing rule. Decide in advance when you will review the mix and what change will trigger a rebalance. A rule reduces the temptation to chase whichever asset recently performed best.

Tax, fee, and account considerations

Fees

Fund expense ratios are deducted from assets and reduce the return you receive. Also check bid-ask spreads, commissions where applicable, account fees, advisory charges, and fees embedded in underlying funds. Compare products with similar exposures; a lower fee does not compensate for a materially different index or risk profile.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Tax location and distributions

Interest, dividends, and realized capital gains can be taxed differently depending on the account and your jurisdiction. Bond interest, Treasury interest, municipal-bond income, and fund distributions may have different treatment. Review current tax rules and account disclosures, especially before selling a concentrated position that has a large unrealized gain.

Liquidity and penalties

Marketable ETFs and securities can usually be sold during trading hours, but the sale price is not guaranteed. Savings accounts are accessible subject to bank rules; CDs may impose an early-withdrawal penalty; and some retirement accounts impose taxes or penalties on withdrawals. Keep the liquidity needed for emergencies outside assets that would require a forced sale.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Replacing one concentration with another

Symptom: You sell individual AI companies and buy a sector ETF whose largest holdings are the same companies.

Correction: Read the index and top holdings. Add a genuinely broader equity exposure or reduce the sector position so the portfolio’s outcome is not dominated by one theme.

Assuming bonds cannot lose money

Symptom: A bond fund falls after interest rates rise, creating an unexpected loss.

Correction: Understand duration, credit quality, and whether the fund has a maturity date. Keep near-term spending in assets designed for that horizon rather than relying on a bond fund’s daily price.

Treating every cash vehicle as insured

Symptom: You assume a money-market fund has the same protection as a bank savings deposit.

Correction: Identify whether the account is a deposit or a securities fund, then read the insurance and redemption terms.

Choosing a target-date fund by year alone

Moving everything to cash after a decline

Symptom: A market drop leads to an emotional sale, followed by uncertainty about when to reinvest.

Practical decision paths

You need the money within a year

Prioritize access and stability. Savings deposits, appropriately timed CDs, and short-term Treasury bills may fit, depending on terms, insurance, and your need for immediate access. Avoid taking substantial stock-market risk for a date-certain expense.

You need a balance of growth and stability over several years

Consider combining diversified equity exposure with bonds whose maturity and duration match the spending schedule, while keeping a cash reserve for expenses that cannot wait. The farther away the goal, the more time there is to recover from equity volatility, but the exact mix remains personal.

You are investing for a distant retirement

A broad-market equity fund can provide diversified growth exposure, with bonds and cash sized to your tolerance, other retirement income, and planned withdrawals. A target-date fund can automate this process if its glide path and fees suit you and you are comfortable using one professionally managed allocation.

You already own several AI-related holdings

Inventory the exposure across individual shares, sector funds, employer stock, and options. Decide what concentration is acceptable, consider the tax cost of selling, and redirect new contributions toward the assets that are underrepresented. Diversifying gradually can reduce the need for a single taxable transaction, but it does not remove market or tax risk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to monitor the plan

Review the portfolio when a goal, time horizon, income situation, or risk capacity changes, and at a regular interval that does not encourage constant trading. Check whether the fund’s index, holdings, fees, and glide path remain what you selected. Rebalance according to your written rule, account for taxes before selling, and replenish cash after planned withdrawals.

The central test is concentration: if one company, sector, interest-rate assumption, or cash account determines whether you can meet a goal, the portfolio is not diversified enough for that goal. Broad-market funds, bonds, and cash solve different problems; combining them deliberately is more robust than searching for a single “safe” replacement for AI stocks.
