If symptoms could be life-threatening, call 911 in the United States or your local emergency number now. Do not wait for an AI chatbot to answer or use one to decide whether an emergency is real. Emergency services can send trained responders to the person’s location and provide care while arranging emergency treatment.
For a concerning problem that does not appear immediately life-threatening, contact the person’s usual clinician or an on-call provider, use a nurse advice line if the health plan, employer, or provider offers one, or choose urgent care when a regular appointment is not available soon enough. In the United States, suicidal thoughts or thoughts of harming someone else can be directed to 988; an attempt or immediate danger requires 911 or the local emergency number.
Start with the emergency threshold
The safest alternative to chatbot symptom advice is a human service matched to the urgency of the situation. MedlinePlus advises calling 911 or the local emergency number when a problem may be life-threatening. Its emergency medical services guidance states: “If you think the problem is life-threatening, call 911.” The same principle applies outside the United States, using the emergency number for the country where the person is located.

A chatbot cannot examine the person, measure vital signs, see a change in consciousness, or dispatch help. It also cannot safely rule out an emergency from a text description. If you are uncertain and the symptoms could be dangerous, use emergency services rather than trying to obtain reassurance from software.

Signs that call for emergency services
The following examples come from MedlinePlus adult emergency guidance, reviewed July 15, 2026. They are warning signs, not a complete diagnostic checklist. A person can have a serious emergency without matching one of these examples.
- Severe chest pain or pressure, especially sudden crushing, squeezing, tightening, or pressure-like pain.
- Chest discomfort accompanied by shortness of breath, nausea, dizziness, sweating, or pain spreading to the jaw or arm. MedlinePlus advises calling 911 even when the person is unsure whether it is a heart attack.
- Severe shortness of breath, choking, or stopped breathing.
- A seizure lasting more than one minute or a seizure after which the person does not rapidly awaken.
- Sudden inability to speak, see, walk, or move.
- Sudden weakness or drooping on one side of the body, which can signal a sudden neurologic emergency.
- Fainting, sudden confusion, severe pain, heavy bleeding, or coughing or vomiting blood.
- A severe allergic reaction with breathing trouble or swelling.
- Possible poisoning or overdose.
These signs should not be used as a home test that proves someone is safe when they are absent. Symptoms can be incomplete, atypical, or difficult to describe. When the situation feels immediately dangerous, call emergency services and describe what is happening rather than waiting for an online assessment.
Children need child-specific emergency assessment
Do not apply adult thresholds mechanically to infants and children. MedlinePlus pediatric guidance lists emergency examples including choking; stopped breathing or turning blue; trouble breathing; uncontrolled bleeding; severe burns; certain head injuries; prolonged seizures; possible poisoning; fainting; severe allergic reaction; and sudden difficulty waking or confusion. It also includes sudden inability to speak, see, walk, or move.
Call 911 or the local emergency number for these warning signs, or for any child who appears to be in immediate danger. A chatbot cannot perform the age-specific assessment that an emergency dispatcher, paramedic, clinician, or pediatric emergency team can provide.
Choose the human option that fits the situation
Three questions help distinguish the available routes:
- Could the problem be life-threatening? If yes or you cannot safely exclude that possibility, call emergency services.
- Does the person need help at the scene right now? Emergency medical services are designed to bring trained responders and specially equipped facilities to the person. An emergency department evaluates serious emergencies after arrival.
- If it is concerning but not an apparent emergency, how quickly can a clinician be reached? Try the usual clinician or on-call provider first; use a nurse advice line if one is available; choose urgent care when timely routine access is not possible.
Insurance coverage, fees, hours, and local availability vary. A service offered by one health plan, employer, or clinic may not exist for another, so check the resources attached to the person’s coverage or workplace rather than assuming a universal service.
Quick comparison of the main alternatives
| Option | Best fit | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Emergency services | Potentially life-threatening symptoms or a need for immediate help at the person’s location | Use the local emergency number; 911 applies in the United States |
| Emergency department | Evaluation and treatment of serious emergencies | It cannot replace calling for immediate scene assistance when the person is unstable |
| Usual clinician or on-call provider | Concerning symptoms without an apparent immediate emergency | Response times and after-hours coverage differ |
| Nurse advice line | Questions about the appropriate level of care when a participating plan, employer, or provider offers one | Availability is not universal and it is not an emergency service |
| Urgent care | Time-sensitive, non-life-threatening illness or minor injury when routine access is too slow | Hours, age limits, fees, and accepted coverage vary |
| 988 or a local crisis service | Suicidal thoughts or thoughts of harming another person | Immediate danger or an attempt requires emergency services |
Cost and insurance should be checked when there is time to do so, but financial questions must not delay emergency treatment. There is no universal price, opening-hour, or coverage comparison for these services. A plan’s member card, portal, employer benefits page, clinic website, or local health authority can show which non-emergency routes are available.

Emergency services: when immediate help is needed at the location
Call 911 in the United States, or the local emergency number elsewhere, for potentially life-threatening symptoms. Emergency medical services use specially trained people and specially equipped facilities, and responders can begin care where the person is. Tell the dispatcher the location, the main problem, and the most concerning change, such as severe breathing trouble, chest pressure, sudden weakness, or unresponsiveness. Follow the dispatcher’s instructions and stay on the line unless told otherwise.
Emergency services are the right route when a person is choking, has stopped breathing, has severe chest pain or pressure, cannot suddenly speak or move, has a prolonged seizure, or shows another serious warning sign. Do not wait for a chatbot response, a search result, or a callback from a routine clinic when these signs are present.
Emergency department: evaluation of serious emergencies
An emergency department is intended to evaluate and treat emergencies. Use it when the warning signs indicate a serious emergency, either by calling emergency services or following local emergency instructions for reaching the department. The department can assess problems that require immediate examination, testing, monitoring, or treatment that an online conversation cannot provide.
If the person’s condition meets the emergency threshold, contacting emergency services is the safest first step because responders can provide care at the scene. The exact process for reaching an emergency department differs by location, so follow the dispatcher’s or local health service’s instructions.

Usual clinician or an on-call provider
When symptoms are concerning but do not appear to be an immediate, life-threatening emergency, contact the person’s doctor or clinic. Explain when the symptoms began, what changed, and why you are concerned. Ask what level of care is appropriate and how soon the person should be seen.
If the office is closed, the telephone system may forward calls to an on-call professional. The on-call clinician can provide guidance within the practice’s service and direct the person to emergency care or another timely option when necessary. Availability and response arrangements differ among practices, so use the clinic’s published after-hours number rather than assuming a callback will occur instantly.
Nurse advice lines
Some health plans, employers, and health care providers offer a nurse telephone advice service. A nurse can listen to the symptoms, ask follow-up questions, and help identify an appropriate level of care. Look for the number on an insurance card, member portal, employer benefits page, or clinic instructions.

Urgent care can be appropriate for a problem that needs timely attention but is not life-threatening, especially when the regular clinician cannot see the patient soon enough. MedlinePlus gives mild illnesses and minor injuries as examples of problems that may be handled in urgent care.
Before going, check the center’s current hours, age limits, appointment rules, and accepted coverage. These details vary by location. If the symptoms include a serious emergency warning sign, skip urgent care and call emergency services; urgent care is not a substitute for emergency response.
Virtual urgent care and telehealth
A licensed telehealth or virtual urgent-care service may be an option for non-emergency assessment when it is available in the person’s area and the patient meets its eligibility requirements. Confirm what symptoms the service handles, how quickly a clinician responds, whether the service can arrange in-person follow-up, and what fees or coverage rules apply.
Telehealth is not a route for severe breathing trouble, crushing chest pressure, sudden neurologic changes, stopped breathing, a prolonged seizure, an overdose, or immediate suicide risk. In those situations, call emergency services. Do not let a video appointment, online intake form, or payment question delay an emergency call.
Urgent mental health and suicide-related concerns
In the United States, call or text 988, or use the chat option at 988lifeline.org, when someone is thinking about suicide or about harming another person. MedlinePlus describes the service this way: “The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline provides free and confidential support 24/7, anytime day or night.”
If someone has attempted suicide or faces immediate physical danger, call 911 or the local emergency number. Outside the United States, use the country’s crisis service and emergency number. Do not rely on a chatbot to manage imminent risk, decide whether an attempt is serious, or keep a person safe while help is delayed.

Why an AI chatbot is not an emergency triage service
Chatbots generate responses from the text supplied to them. They do not have direct access to the person’s examination, medical records, vital signs, medications, or surroundings. A fluent answer can therefore sound reassuring or urgent without establishing what is actually happening.
Use software, if at all, only for low-stakes administrative help after a qualified human route has been chosen—for example, finding a clinic’s published phone number or preparing a list of questions. Do not ask a chatbot to rule out a heart attack, stroke, severe allergic reaction, overdose, breathing emergency, or suicide risk. Do not wait for it to finish responding before calling for help.
A practical call-and-escalation checklist
When a symptom is urgent, a short, organized handoff helps the human service act quickly.
- Identify the location. Give the exact address or other location requested by the dispatcher or service.
- State the main danger first. Say what is happening now, such as severe breathing difficulty, chest pressure, sudden weakness, a seizure, or unresponsiveness.
- Describe timing and change. Explain when it began and whether it appeared suddenly or is getting worse.
- Answer questions directly. Dispatchers, nurses, and clinicians may ask follow-up questions to select the right level of care.
- Use the service’s instructions. Follow the emergency dispatcher, on-call clinician, nurse, or urgent-care team rather than switching back to online symptom searches.
If you are calling a routine clinician or nurse line, have the patient’s name, callback number, and the symptoms’ start time available. Share only information you know; do not delay an emergency call to assemble a complete history.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Waiting for reassurance. A reassuring chatbot response does not exclude an emergency.
- Treating a warning-sign list as exhaustive. Serious illness may look different, especially in children, older adults, or people who cannot describe symptoms clearly.
- Using the wrong number. 911 and 988 are United States services; use the correct emergency and crisis resources for the person’s country.
- Choosing urgent care for an emergency. Urgent care is for non-life-threatening problems that need timely attention.
- Assuming a nurse line exists. Check the health plan, employer, or provider rather than expecting every patient to have access.
- Delaying to compare prices. Check cost and coverage for non-emergency care when possible, but never postpone emergency contact for a billing answer.
- Applying adult advice to a child. Use pediatric guidance and seek help for a child who appears to be in immediate danger.
How to decide when you are not sure
Uncertainty is itself a reason to involve a human service, not a reason to seek more chatbot output. If the symptoms could be life-threatening, call emergency services. If they are troubling but not an apparent emergency, contact the clinician or on-call service. If routine access is too slow, use an available nurse advice line or urgent care. If the concern involves suicide, self-harm, or harm to another person, use 988 in the United States or the appropriate local crisis service; immediate danger requires emergency services.
This approach deliberately favors trained human assessment over a text-based guess. The warning-sign examples above are not exhaustive, and the absence of one does not guarantee that waiting is safe.
Geography and service details matter
The numbers 911 and 988 are United States services. Readers elsewhere should use their country’s emergency and crisis numbers. Even within the United States, emergency department access, urgent-care hours, nurse-line availability, insurance rules, and employer benefits differ by community and plan.

MedlinePlus’ adult emergency-room guidance was reviewed July 15, 2026, and its emergency medical services page was last updated May 24, 2026. Because phone services and local arrangements can change, verify the current number and eligibility for the place where help is needed. When a life-threatening sign is present, do not postpone the call while checking online details.
Frequently Asked Questions
When should I call 911 instead of using a chatbot?
Call 911 in the United States, or the local emergency number elsewhere, for potentially life-threatening symptoms such as severe chest pressure, severe breathing trouble, choking, stopped breathing, a prolonged seizure, sudden inability to speak or move, sudden one-sided weakness, severe allergic reaction with breathing trouble or swelling, poisoning or overdose, heavy bleeding, or sudden confusion. The examples are not exhaustive.
Should I call a nurse advice line or go to urgent care?
Use a nurse advice line when your health plan, employer, or provider offers one and the problem is concerning but not an apparent emergency. Choose urgent care for a non-life-threatening illness or minor injury that needs timely attention when your regular clinician cannot see you soon enough. Either route should be replaced by emergency services if serious warning signs appear.
What should I do if I am unsure how serious the symptoms are?
If you cannot safely exclude a life-threatening problem, call emergency services and describe what is happening. Do not wait for chatbot reassurance. For a concerning but non-emergency problem, contact the usual clinician, an on-call provider, a nurse line, or urgent care according to availability.
What is the right option for a child with urgent symptoms?
Use child-specific assessment. Call emergency services for choking, stopped breathing or turning blue, trouble breathing, uncontrolled bleeding, severe burns, certain head injuries, prolonged seizures, possible poisoning, fainting, severe allergic reaction, sudden difficulty waking or confusion, or any child who appears to be in immediate danger.
Can I use telehealth for urgent symptoms?
A licensed virtual urgent-care service may help with non-emergency assessment if it serves the patient’s location and accepts the patient. Verify its clinical scope, response time, eligibility, follow-up process, and cost. Do not use telehealth for severe breathing problems, chest pressure, sudden neurologic changes, stopped breathing, overdose, or immediate suicide risk.
What number should I use for a mental health crisis?
In the United States, call or text 988 or use 988lifeline.org chat for suicidal thoughts or thoughts of harming someone else. If someone has attempted suicide or faces immediate physical danger, call 911. Outside the United States, use the local crisis and emergency numbers.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe Bottom Line
Do not ask an AI chatbot to triage a possible emergency. Call 911 or the local emergency number for life-threatening signs; contact a clinician, on-call provider, nurse advice line, or urgent care for concerning non-emergency problems; and use 988 in the United States for suicidal or violent thoughts. Human services can assess the person and escalate care when needed.
