AlterMe combines a DNA test, wearable biometric tracking and app-based guidance for exercise, nutrition, sleep and recovery. Its standalone Starter DNA Test is separate from the wearable-linked program, and does not include app access. Whether the DNA layer is worth paying for is less certain: independent consensus sources have found limited evidence that genetic testing improves nutrition guidance or can reliably prescribe individualized training. AlterMe’s advertised results are company claims, not independently established outcomes.
What is AlterMe?
AlterMe describes its full program as an adaptive fitness and wellness system that brings together genetic information, biometric data from a wearable, and a user’s goals. The app is intended to guide exercise, nutrition, sleep and recovery. The company describes a ring or wristband, biometric tracking, workouts, recovery classes and nutrition guidance as parts of its offering. The exact package and included device may vary, so check the live checkout details. AlterMe’s homepage and its “What comes with AlterMe?” support article describe the program.
This is a description of what AlterMe says it provides, not a hands-on assessment. The kit, app, wearable, coaching and customer support were not independently tested for this review.

AlterMe presents two distinct ways to start: a standalone Starter DNA Test and the broader program built around the app and wearable. According to the company’s support article, the standalone test does not include app access. The full system is the relevant option if you want ongoing guidance using wearable data as well as DNA and goals. AlterMe’s support article explains the distinction.

AlterMe’s homepage and legacy pricing page have shown different offers. The legacy page may be stale, so its figures should not be treated as current. Confirm the total cost, any recurring payments, financing terms, cancellation conditions and package contents before purchasing. The live homepage is the appropriate place to begin checking the offer; the legacy pricing page illustrates why older figures may not match.
What does AlterMe’s DNA report cover?
AlterMe says it analyzes more than 60 SNPs and groups reported traits into areas such as nutrition, exercise, stress and sleep. Its listed examples include exercise type, metabolism, recovery and fatigue, body-composition tendencies, nutritional tendencies and chronotype. A genetic association is not automatically a practical prescription. A report may describe a tendency, but a reader still needs to know whether acting on that information improves outcomes beyond guidance based on goals, health history, preferences and observed response to training or nutrition. The sources reviewed do not establish that AlterMe’s particular recommendations have been validated in controlled trials.
Does DNA testing really tell you how to work out?
Independent evidence supports caution about treating consumer genetic results as a way to determine the best individual training plan. A 2015 British Journal of Sports Medicine consensus statement said: “The general consensus among sport and exercise genetics researchers is that genetic tests have no role to play in talent identification or the individualised prescription of training to maximise performance.” That statement addressed the state of sport and exercise genetics at the time; it is not a direct test of AlterMe or every later application. It does mean that a commercial promise of genotype-directed training needs evidence beyond the existence of a DNA report. Read the 2015 consensus statement.

Nutrition claims also need qualification. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ 2021 consensus report, based on a systematic review, concluded that the available evidence was weak and insufficient to determine whether incorporating genetic testing into nutrition practice has an effect. The report concerns genetic testing in nutrition practice generally; it did not evaluate AlterMe specifically. The Academy report is available through PubMed.
A 2024 systematic review of 12 randomized trials involving 827 subjects examined exercise and DNA methylation. The authors reported heterogeneous findings and called for more research on exercise dose-response and fitness outcomes. This is research about methylation changes after exercise, not evidence that buying a consumer DNA report or using AlterMe improves an individual’s fitness results. What do AlterMe’s results claims show?
AlterMe’s homepage reported three outcome figures during this research: 33% more weight lost, 25% greater fitness gains and 25% greater reduction in visceral fat. The page did not state the year for these figures, and the material reviewed did not provide enough methodological detail to establish the sample, comparison group, study design or independent replication. They should therefore be read as AlterMe’s marketing claims, not as settled estimates of what a customer can expect. The claims appear on AlterMe’s homepage.

AlterMe labels these as member survey results, but the survey instrument, sample size, response rate and independent verification were not established in the material reviewed. These figures describe reported member perceptions, not proof of improved health or fitness outcomes.

Is AlterMe worth it?
AlterMe may appeal to someone who wants one app-centered program that combines a wearable, fitness and wellness guidance, and a genetic report. The clearest distinction is between paying for a standalone test without app access and enrolling in the broader wearable-linked system. The available evidence does not establish that the DNA component itself leads to better training, nutrition or weight-loss outcomes.
Before paying for the full program, compare it with a wearable-led plan or qualified professional support on the factors that affect your needs: the quality of coaching, whether advice accounts for health history and changing performance, the device and app features, privacy and data handling, and total cost over the full term. The sources reviewed do not establish a head-to-head advantage for AlterMe over ordinary coaching or another fitness plan.
- Consider the standalone test if your goal is to explore reported genetic traits and you are comfortable that app access is excluded and practical benefit is uncertain.
- Consider the full system if you specifically value wearable-linked app guidance and its current price, device and commitment suit you—without assuming the DNA layer has proven added value.
- Look elsewhere if you need individualized training or nutrition decisions grounded in your medical history, or if you want independent evidence that a particular genetic recommendation improves your results.
