The ALPAKA Essential Backpack Pro 22L is a pocket-rich everyday pack built around a separate rear laptop compartment, two external bottle pockets, and a luggage pass-through. Its listed size and organization make it a plausible commute or light-travel choice, but check your laptop’s actual dimensions and consider strap comfort before buying: the official laptop claim and one reviewer’s report differ.
ALPAKA Japan’s listing headlines it “ESSENTIAL BACKPACK 22L” but names it “ESSENTIAL BACKPACK PRO 22L” in the specifications; CGMagazine calls it “ALPAKA Essentials Pack 22L.” These names refer to the pack discussed here.

How is the storage laid out?
The pack’s organization separates quick-access items from the main load and laptop. The official listing specifies:
- Top: A zip pocket with two open pockets inside.
- Front: A zip pocket with a MOD key tether.
- Main compartment: An open pocket, a mesh zip pocket, and an AirTag pocket.
- Laptop: A separate compartment at the rear.
- Sides: Two external bottle pockets.
- Back: A security zip pocket and a pass-through for a luggage handle.
- Carry and accessories: A carry handle, chest strap, and two loops for separately sold HUB accessories.
Will your laptop fit?
ALPAKA’s listing says the compartment supports laptops up to 16 inches. In his August 25, 2026 CGMagazine review, Matt Keith says it holds up to a 15-inch laptop. Neither source gives device chassis measurements or explains the difference, so a screen-size label alone is not a reliable fit check.
Rank #2
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Compare your laptop’s width, depth, and thickness with the compartment dimensions, or confirm fit with the seller before ordering. A nominally 16-inch laptop may vary in its physical dimensions, and the available information does not establish compatibility with every such device.
What did the independent review find?
Keith reports carrying the bag daily for several weeks. He praised its organization, bottom padding, bottle pockets, and magnetic chest-strap buckle. During his use, he saw no fabric snags or scratches and had no concern about rain entering in the rainy period he experienced. These are individual observations, not controlled durability or weather tests.

Keith found the shoulder straps comfortable overall, but said he would prefer wider straps for weight distribution on his wider shoulders. That fit observation comes from one reviewer; it cannot predict comfort for every wearer. If you carry a heavy load or have specific strap preferences, try the pack loaded if possible.
How does it compare with the 16L Essential Backpack?
ALPAKA’s listings show the size and weight differences below. The dimensions and weights are the manufacturer’s listed figures, not independent measurements.
Rank #4

| Model | Capacity | Dimensions | Listed weight | Storage distinction in ALPAKA’s listing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Essential Backpack 16L | 16L | 44 × 29 × 15 cm | 700 g | One internal bottle pocket and a laptop sleeve |
| Essential Backpack Pro 22L | 22L | 45 × 27.5 × 18 cm | 860 g | Two external bottle pockets and a separate rear laptop compartment |
The 22L listing therefore adds 6L of nominal capacity, 160 g, and 3 cm of depth. ALPAKA also identifies the chest strap and external side bottle pockets as additions over the 16L model. The extra depth may matter more than the capacity figure if you carry the bag in a crowded commute.

A September 2026 community-thread poster who owned the 16L model cited the lack of a separate laptop compartment and water-bottle sleeve as drawbacks, and said the 22L appeared to address both. That is one owner’s impression, not a product test or evidence about all owners.
Best Value

What does it cost?
ALPAKA Japan listed the 22L at ¥27,500 including tax when its product page was accessed October 7, 2026. CGMagazine listed a US MSRP of $149.99 in its August 25, 2026 review. These are region-specific figures in different currencies, not a direct price comparison; check the price and availability for your location.
Who is it best suited to?
Consider the 22L if you want a structured daily bag with separate laptop storage, readily accessible external bottle pockets, numerous smaller pockets, and a luggage pass-through. Before choosing it over the 16L, weigh the added capacity against the 22L’s 18 cm listed depth and 160 g additional weight.
It is a less certain choice if your laptop is close to the stated size limit, strap width is important to you, or you need proven waterproof protection. The available sources do not establish long-term durability or lab-tested weather performance.
