Allianz Australia Basic Travel Insurance is a limited international travel policy centred on emergency medical and hospital expenses, emergency assistance and personal liability. It does not include several common trip-protection benefits, including cancellation, baggage and travel-delay cover. This review refers specifically to the Australian plan; “Allianz Basic” may mean something different in another country or insurance category.
What Allianz Basic says it covers
Allianz describes Basic as covering overseas emergency medical and hospital expenses, overseas emergency assistance and personal liability. Its FAQ also refers to emergency dental expenses arising from injury or sudden pain, and repatriation. These benefits are subject to the policy’s conditions, limits and exclusions; the insurer’s Basic plan summary is not a substitute for the applicable Product Disclosure Statement (PDS).
What is not included
Allianz’s published summary says Basic does not provide the following benefits:

Basic also cannot be extended with the Adventure, Snow or Cruise packs, or with increased item-limit cover. Check the PDS for the exact scope of exclusions and any related conditions.

Who may be eligible
Allianz states that Basic is available to travellers under 75 when the Certificate of Insurance is issued. It also says pre-existing-condition cover is unavailable under this plan, including for someone who knows they are pregnant when buying the policy. These are the insurer’s published conditions; read the applicable PDS for definitions and any further eligibility restrictions.
How much does Allianz Basic cost?
Allianz calls Basic its cheapest international travel-insurance option, but does not publish a standard premium on its product page. The price depends on details including destination, trip duration and traveller age, so you need a quote for your own trip. No general price or comparison with other insurers can be inferred without matching quotes.
How to assess whether it fits your trip
Basic may be worth considering if your main concern is the medical, assistance and liability cover described by Allianz, and you are comfortable not having the excluded trip-protection benefits. If cancellation, delays, baggage or rental-vehicle excess matter to you, compare policies that include those benefits and check the limits that apply.
Allianz says its Comprehensive plan includes the basic medical and assistance cover plus benefits such as delays, cancellations and lost luggage, subject to policy terms. Compare plans using the Table of Benefits in the PDS, rather than relying on benefit names alone. The insurer’s travel-insurance information page explains that the PDS sets out insured events, claim limits, exclusions and the claims process.

- Covered events: Check whether the situations you want protection for are insured.
- Limits and sublimits: Confirm the maximum payment for each benefit and any item-level caps.
- Exclusions and conditions: Look for restrictions that could affect your destination, activities or circumstances.
- Eligibility and medical conditions: Check the relevant age rules and how pre-existing conditions are handled.
- Total premium: Compare quotes for the same trip details and cover needs.
- Claims requirements: Review what documents and steps the policy requires if you need to claim.
Use the PDS that applies to the policy issue date, since policy wording and limits can vary by version. Allianz’s policy information page is the place to check the relevant documents.

Allianz identifies AWP Australia Pty Ltd (ABN 52 097 227 177, AFSL 245631), trading as Allianz Global Assistance, as the agent that issues and manages Travel Insurance. Allianz Australia Insurance Limited (ABN 15 000 122 850, AFSL 234708) is identified as the insurer. The product page says the agent receives a commission calculated as a percentage of the premium when a policy is purchased.
What this review can and cannot establish
The published product information establishes Allianz’s stated benefits, exclusions, eligibility condition and pricing factors. It does not establish independent customer satisfaction, claims-settlement performance or value against a competitor’s current quote. Use the PDS and a trip-specific quote to judge the policy for your circumstances.
