To run an All the Mods 9 – No Frills server, download the matching Server-Files archive from the exact CurseForge release, extract every file into a clean directory, use a compatible Java runtime, allocate at least 6 GB of RAM (8–10 GB is a more practical starting range), and make every player install the identical Minecraft, Forge, and modpack release. The No Frills pack is not interchangeable with regular All the Mods 9.
The currently listed No Frills files are release 0.2, dated April 24, 2025, for Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge. The instructions below cover both a computer you control and a managed Minecraft host, then explain first launch, networking, client matching, updates, and the errors most often seen when one setting is wrong.
What All the Mods 9 – No Frills is
All the Mods 9 – No Frills is a Forge modpack for Minecraft 1.20.1. Its description presents it as All the Mods 9 with many bells and whistles removed while retaining the same endgame. The CurseForge project lists more than 400 mods and about 1.1 million downloads, a scale that makes server memory, startup time, and version discipline much more important than on a vanilla server.
No Frills has its own client and server archives. A regular All the Mods 9 installation, another No Frills release, or a manually edited collection of mods is a different software set. The server and every client must use the same No Frills release.

File names and dates can change when a project publishes a new build. Before downloading, open the pack’s Files tab and record the release number, Minecraft version, loader, and both archive names. Pin those values in your server notes so an update does not silently mix generations.
Decide where the server will run
You can host on your own computer or use a managed Minecraft provider. Both approaches are valid; the choice changes who handles networking, Java, updates, and recovery.

Choose self-hosting when you want complete file and network control and can keep the machine online. Choose a managed service when uptime, remote access, and routine administration matter more than running the hardware yourself. In either case, the pack still needs the same memory, Java, Forge, and client-version discipline.

Prepare the machine and resources
Memory planning
The official All The Mods server guide states at least 6 GB of allocated RAM. A separate current installation overview lists 8 GB minimum and 10 GB recommended for ATM9. These figures describe different planning levels, not a contradiction: 6 GB is a lower baseline from the server guide, while 8–10 GB is a more practical starting range for a heavily modded 1.20.1 server.

Actual use changes with simultaneous players, view and simulation distance, chunk generation, dimensions, entities, and other server settings. Increase the allocation only within the physical machine or hosting plan’s limits. If the server pauses for garbage collection or reports an out-of-memory error, inspect the logs, then either add available memory or reduce view distance before changing advanced Java flags.
Storage, CPU, and operating-system preparation
- Use a clean directory dedicated to this server. Do not extract over another modpack or an old world until you have a tested backup.
- Leave free storage for the generated world, logs, crash reports, and at least one separate backup copy. World size is not fixed; exploration and generated dimensions can grow it substantially.
- Close applications that compete for memory or CPU during startup. A modpack with more than 400 mods can take considerably longer to initialize than vanilla Minecraft.
- Ensure you have permission to execute scripts and create files in the server directory. On a managed host, upload to the provider’s main server folder, as the official guide instructs.
Download the correct server archive
- Open the All the Mods 9 – No Frills project on CurseForge and select the Files tab.
- Choose the exact release you want to run. For the files currently listed as release 0.2, confirm the April 24, 2025 date and Minecraft 1.20.1/Forge metadata.
- Download the archive whose name includes Server-Files. For release 0.2 this is the matching Server-Files-0.2.zip. Do not download only the client modpack zip and expect it to create a dedicated server.
- Create a new, empty server directory and extract the complete archive into it. Keep the folder structure intact; moving individual mods or configuration files into unrelated directories can produce an incomplete installation.
- If you are using a managed host, upload every extracted file to the host’s main server folder. The server guide specifically calls for the complete file set, not just the executable jar or the mods folder.
- Keep the original zip outside the live directory. It gives you a clean source if extraction was interrupted or a file is accidentally deleted.
Set the loader and Java executable
Check the supplied configuration
Inspect the extracted start script, setup files, and any README before launching. Some distributions use a setup YAML or similar configuration. If present, set its Minecraft and loader values to the release you downloaded. The official guide’s ATM9 example uses Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge loader 47.3.7, but that is an example configuration; verify the exact Forge build pinned by your selected No Frills release instead of copying the number blindly.

Do not replace a release’s Forge files with a newer installer merely because it is available. The loader build, mods, and configuration are a tested combination. If the Files tab identifies a different Forge build, use that build and update the client profile to match it.
Verify which Java runs the script
A compatible Java runtime is required, but the supplied material does not establish one universal numeric Java major for every No Frills release. Follow the runtime requirement in the archive’s script or documentation and verify the executable actually used by that script.
- Open a terminal or command prompt in the server directory and run
java -version. Record the result. - Open the start script and look for an explicit Java path or a variable that selects Java. A script that calls only
javamay use the operating system’s default executable. - If multiple Java versions are installed, point the script directly at the compatible executable, or configure the operating system’s Java alternatives so the intended version is first.
- Run the script again and check the startup log for the Java command and version where available. A successful
java -versionin your shell does not prove that a double-clicked script or hosting panel uses the same runtime.
When an installer closes immediately, reports an unsupported class version, or fails before Forge begins, Java selection is one of the first things to verify. Fix the executable path before changing memory arguments.

Launch the server for the first time
- Start the supplied script from the server directory. On some systems you may need to run the script from a terminal so its error output remains visible.
- Watch the generated log and console. The first launch may create libraries, configuration files, and a world, so it can take longer than later starts.
- When the server creates
eula.txt, stop the process if necessary, open that file, read the Minecraft EULA, and change the acceptance entry only if you agree to the terms. - Start the script again after accepting the EULA. Let Forge finish loading every mod and configuration.
- Treat the server as ready only when the console reaches its normal
Donestate for the selected release. A window that remains open while showing an exception or repeated error is not a successful launch. - Stop the server cleanly from the console before making configuration changes or copying a backup. Killing the process during world saving can damage the world or leave incomplete region files.
Make it reachable on your network
Local hosting
For players on the same local network, provide the host computer’s local address and the port shown in the server configuration. For players outside your home, allow the server through the operating-system firewall and configure the router to forward the chosen port to the host computer. The exact screens and terms vary by operating system and router, and the available pack sources do not specify a universal forwarding recipe, so use instructions verified for your hardware rather than copying an unrelated port guide.
Managed hosting
Use the provider’s networking panel and public address. Confirm that the assigned port is open, that the server process is online, and that the address you give players is the public endpoint rather than an internal container address. If the provider offers a firewall or DDoS option, understand whether it covers the game port you are using.
Share the address safely
Give the address only to the intended players. Do not publish a home IP address in a public post. If the address changes, update your group through a private channel and check the firewall and forwarding rules before reinstalling the pack.

Install the matching client for every player
- Have each player install the same All the Mods 9 – No Frills release selected for the server, not regular All the Mods 9.
- Use the same Minecraft version shown by the server files: the listed No Frills 0.2 release targets Minecraft 1.20.1.
- Use the same Forge loader build pinned by that release. If the server setup identifies a particular build, the client profile must use it too.
- Do not independently update, remove, or add mods. A launcher update performed on one computer can create a different mod list even when the pack name looks identical.
- Connect only after the server has completed startup. If the client reports missing mods, registry mismatches, or a rejected connection, compare the release number, Minecraft version, Forge build, and mod files before changing network settings.
Keep a written record of the selected release and loader. When inviting a new player, send those values and the official client profile rather than a hand-edited mods folder.

- Stop the server cleanly and copy the entire world directory to storage outside the live server folder.
- Back up configuration files and the exact server archive or a checksum of it. A world can depend on mod and configuration versions, so a world-only backup may not be enough to reproduce it.
- Extract the new Server-Files archive into a separate test directory. Never overwrite the only working installation while you are still checking compatibility.
- Copy a backup of the world into the test installation and launch it with the matching new client profile.
- Join locally, inspect important machines and dimensions, and review logs for missing registry entries or data-fix warnings.
- Only after the test succeeds, schedule downtime, replace the live files, and tell every player to update their client at the same time.
Do not assume that regular ATM9 updates can be applied to No Frills, or that a newer No Frills release is automatically world-compatible. Pin the old archive until the new server and clients have been tested together.
Troubleshoot the common failures
The installer or start script fails immediately
- Run
java -versionand compare it with the runtime expected by the supplied script or documentation. - Check whether the script calls a different Java executable than your terminal. Replace an ambiguous
javacall with the intended path where the script permits it. - Confirm that the archive was fully extracted and that the script is running from the directory containing its libraries and configuration.
- Read the first fatal exception in the log, not only the final line saying the process stopped. Fix the earliest cause and retry.
The server runs out of memory or pauses for a long time
- Check the allocated value and the host’s real memory limit. Start from the 6 GB baseline, with 8–10 GB as a practical planning range, rather than assigning more memory than the machine can provide.
- Reduce view distance and other load-producing settings if several players are generating new terrain.
- Look for repeated memory or garbage-collection messages in the log before changing JVM flags. Random flag changes can make diagnosis harder.
- Remember that the operating system and other services need memory in addition to the value assigned to Minecraft.
Missing mods or registry mismatch appears when joining
- Compare the client and server release names and numbers character for character.
- Confirm both use Minecraft 1.20.1 and the same Forge build.
- Remove manually added, removed, or independently updated mods from the client and reinstall the official No Frills profile if necessary.
- If the server files were copied from an old installation, re-extract a fresh matching Server-Files archive into a clean directory and test with a backup world.
The server starts, but friends cannot connect
- Verify the public address and port you gave them; a local address works only inside the same network.
- Check the operating-system firewall and router forwarding, or the managed host’s networking panel.
- Confirm that the server console is still at its normal ready state and that the process did not stop after startup.
- Do not change mods or Java in response to a connection timeout until the network boundary has been checked.
The installation is corrupt or incomplete
- Stop the server and move the damaged directory aside rather than deleting it immediately.
- Extract a new copy of the matching Server-Files archive into an empty directory.
- Ensure every archive member was uploaded when using a managed host, including configuration, libraries, scripts, and the mods folder.
- Copy only the backed-up world and any deliberately preserved settings into the clean installation, then launch and inspect the logs.
Operating checklist for a stable server
- Record the exact No Frills release, Minecraft version, Forge build, Java executable, memory allocation, and server address.
- Keep the live server directory separate from downloads and test installations.
- Make regular, dated world backups and periodically test that one can be restored.
- Stop the server cleanly before copying files or updating mods.
- Watch startup and shutdown logs after every change; do not treat an open console window as proof that the server is healthy.
- Require every player to update the client when—and only when—the server release is updated.
- For managed hosting, recheck memory, backup retention, custom Forge support, version pinning, and restore access before renewing or changing plans.
What you need to remember
Use the exact No Frills Server-Files archive for the release you selected, extract it completely, and make the supplied script invoke a compatible Java runtime. Budget at least 6 GB of allocated memory; 8–10 GB is a more useful starting range for many ATM9 groups. The listed release 0.2 is Minecraft 1.20.1 on Forge, and every client must match that release and loader. Self-hosting and managed hosting can both work, but neither removes the need for backups, pinned versions, and careful log-based troubleshooting.
