All points addressable (APA) means that data elements can be addressed, referenced, and positioned at any addressable position in a presentation space or on a physical medium. In AFP architecture, this lets content such as text, graphics, and images be placed beyond the limits of fixed character-sized cells.
What “all points addressable” means
The AFP Consortium defines APA as the capability to address, reference, and position data elements at any addressable position in a presentation space or on a physical medium. A presentation space is the area in which content is arranged for presentation.
In practical terms, APA describes placement freedom: content can be positioned at addressable locations across the presentation area rather than only at predetermined character-cell locations. The AFP Consortium’s Presentation Text Object Content Architecture Reference (AFPC-0009-04) uses text, graphics, and images as examples of data elements that can be positioned.

APA versus character-cell addressability
In a character-cell model, the presentation area is divided into fixed rectangles sized for characters, and only those cells can be addressed. APA instead allows positioning at any addressable position in the presentation space or on the physical medium. It is a difference in how locations can be specified, not a claim that output can be infinitely precise.

Addressable position is not the same as pixel size
The same AFP reference defines a picture element, or pixel/pel, as the smallest printable or displayable unit. APA concerns which positions can be addressed; a picture element concerns the smallest unit the output can print or display. The terms describe related but distinct aspects of presentation.
