For most first-time players, choose The Island. It is the default learning map, with a mid-sized main landmass, nearby satellite islands and relatively short early-game travel. Choose Ragnarok for a much larger world, Valguero for dense biome variety, Aberration or Scorched Earth for deliberately harsh survival, and Extinction if your priority is a PvE endgame route. The Center is a free island-based alternative. Paid maps and announced expansions require extra caution because secondary listings and release dates do not always agree.

Released maps: what each one is like

The Island: the safest first choice

The Island is a mid-sized single landmass with satellite islands. That layout keeps early trips relatively short and makes it practical to learn building, taming, crafting and exploration without immediately committing to long-distance travel. It is the clearest choice when a group has mixed experience or when an administrator wants the least complicated onboarding.

Choose it for a first private server, a tutorial-style season or a community that wants a familiar baseline before moving to larger or more specialized maps. Its default status also reduces the risk of players arriving without the extra content required by a paid expansion.

ARK: Survival Ascended - PlayStation 5
  • ARK: Survival Ascended has completely recreated and redesigned the artwork and worlds of ARK to take advantage of the latest in videogame technology, Unreal Engine 5, using high-end graphics features such as fully dynamic Global Illumination (“Lumen”), so that light bounces realistically of off surfaces and provides realistic reflections, and advanced mesh streaming (“Nanite”) of hundreds of millions of triangles for extreme detail.
  • Advanced new physics systems such as dynamic water so that every creature creates waves, ripples, splashes, and bubbles as they move through fluids, and fully interactive physical foliage where every blade of grass, bush, and tree reacts to characters, explosions, projectiles, and physics objects.
  • ARK: Survival Ascended includes access to all of ARK’s worlds, including Scorched Earth, Aberration, Extinction, ARK Genesis Part 1, ARK Genesis Part 2, and more. The Island is released now, with the subsequent expansion worlds to be added at no additional cost on a regular basis.
  • Thorough Quality of Life revamps in every area: redesigned User Interfaces, dynamic navigation for intelligent creature pathfinding, Wild Babies, Photo Mode, new Camera systems, new Map system, Tracking System, new Structures and Items, new Creatures, and much more.

Enjoy an endless stream of new ARK content as the creativity and talent of the community is fully unleashed for the first time ever across gaming platforms!

Scorched Earth: survival under environmental pressure

Scorched Earth replaces the usual temperate starting assumptions with desert conditions. Water scarcity and heat are not occasional hazards; they drive route planning, shelter placement and the timing of expeditions. That pressure makes the map a strong choice for groups that already understand the core survival loop and want the environment itself to be the main difficulty.

It is a poor first server when new players are likely to struggle with basic resource gathering or environmental management. Select it when the point of the season is hardship rather than a gentle introduction.

The Center: a free, water-separated alternative

The Center is a mid-sized map divided into islands separated by water. The geography changes how a group thinks about travel and staging: bases and resource runs are shaped by crossings rather than one continuous land route. It is free, so it can add variety without asking every player to purchase an expansion.

Use it when your community enjoys island-to-island exploration or wants a different layout from The Island while keeping the entry cost at zero.

Aberration: an intentionally difficult underground world

Aberration is an underground map and is rated as difficult for new players. Its setting makes navigation and survival feel fundamentally different from surface maps, so it rewards players who already know the game’s crafting, taming and base-protection systems.

Make it a deliberate challenge server, not the default destination for beginners. A group that wants a hard progression arc can start elsewhere and move to Aberration once players are comfortable with the basics.

Extinction: a ruined Earth and a PvE endgame option

Extinction uses a ruined-Earth setting and features Titans. One guide specifically identifies it as an endgame PvE pick. That recommendation is narrower than a universal best-map claim: it matters most to a cooperative group whose objective is high-end PvE progression rather than learning or relaxed exploration.

If your server’s event calendar is built around late-game encounters, Extinction is the map in this list with the clearest endgame-oriented recommendation. If the group is still learning survival fundamentals, The Island is a better starting point.

Ragnarok: the large, exploration-heavy choice

Ragnarok is reported at roughly 2.5 times The Island’s land area and uses Norse theming. The extra space supports longer expeditions, more separated bases and a stronger sense of a shared frontier, but it also increases the amount of territory a new player must understand.

Multiple guides call Ragnarok the usual second server. That pattern can indicate a larger community than a niche map, but no published player-count statistics establish the size of that advantage. Pick it when scale and exploration matter more than compact travel, or when you want a common follow-up destination after The Island.

Valguero: dense variety in about 63 square kilometres

Valguero is reported at approximately 63 square kilometres. Its defining trait is density rather than sheer sprawl: biomes sit relatively close together, so a server can offer environmental variety without forcing every activity into a long expedition.

It is a strong compromise for groups that find The Island too familiar but Ragnarok too large. Choose Valguero when you want several types of terrain and shorter transitions between them.

Paid and newly released content

Astraeos and Lost Colony

Astraeos is listed by a secondary source at $14.99, while Lost Colony is listed at $29.99. Those figures are not confirmed storefront prices, and regional taxes, currency conversion or later price changes could alter the amount you see. Treat both as paid-map listings to verify, not guaranteed prices.

Before committing a server season, have every participant confirm ownership requirements. A map that only the administrator owns can create an access problem for the rest of the group, and a price shown on a third-party page may not match the current store listing.

Genesis Part 1 (Genesis Ascended Part 1)

Reports place Genesis Part 1’s release in early July 2026, but they disagree on the exact day: 2, 3 or 4 July. That disagreement is important if you are documenting a launch schedule or checking whether a dated announcement is stale. Transfers for Genesis Part 1 were listed to open on 4 September 2026.

In practical terms, the map is treated as released by October 2026, while the precise launch date remains disputed in secondary coverage. Verify the current transfer rules and availability in the official channels before moving characters or resources between servers.

Upcoming, undated and conflicting maps

Dragontopia

Dragontopia is described as a paid expansion, with an Expansion Pass listed at $29.99 by a secondary source. Day-one dragons were reported as live, while one fan site lists 9 December 2026 for a full map-wide skyworld rollout. Earlier roadmaps used only a late-2026 window.

Those statements do not establish a single dependable launch status. If your server depends on the complete skyworld rather than the initial dragon content, wait for a dated announcement from the official storefront or Studio Wildcard before setting a season start.

Fjordur

Fjordur has no confirmed release date. Claims range from December 2026 on one fan site to an undated target and estimates of 2027 or later elsewhere. October 2025 dates are older and should not be used as current commitments.

Do not advertise Fjordur as a scheduled server map unless you can point players to a current official date. For planning purposes, classify it as undated.

Genesis Part 2

Genesis Part 2 is also unconfirmed. One source places it in the second quarter of 2027; another estimates around November 2026 by spacing releases. Neither is a confirmed launch date, so the estimates should not be presented as a roadmap guarantee.

Crystal Isles and Atlantis

Crystal Isles is described as a free remaster with no firm date. Atlantis is listed as TBA. Both belong on a watch list rather than a production server schedule: there is not enough timing information to plan a reliable launch around either one.

How to choose the right map for your server

  1. Classify your players. If this is the group’s first ARK: Survival Ascended experience, select The Island. If everyone is comfortable with the core systems and wants environmental hardship, consider Scorched Earth or Aberration.
  2. Decide how much travel you actually want. Ragnarok supplies the largest reported land area in this set, while Valguero keeps different biomes close together. The Center creates water-separated island routes, and The Island keeps early journeys comparatively short.
  3. Set the content budget before announcing the map. The Island and The Center are free options. Astraeos and Lost Colony have secondary price listings, and Genesis content is paid, but the exact current storefront prices should be checked by every player.
  4. Match the map to the season’s objective. Use Extinction when cooperative PvE endgame progression is the point. Use The Island for teaching and onboarding, Ragnarok for long exploration, Valguero for compact variety, and the harsher maps for a challenge season.
  5. Check the community you need to join. Guides frequently describe Ragnarok as the common second server, which may make it easier to find an established community. There are no published player-count figures here, so treat that as a tendency rather than a guaranteed population advantage.
  6. Confirm release and transfer status. This matters especially for Genesis Part 1, Dragontopia, Fjordur and Genesis Part 2. A map can be announced, partially available or listed by a fan site without having the complete content or a stable transfer system.
  7. Verify the exact map name in your server panel. Ascended editions can use labels such as Genesis Ascended Part 1. Match the panel’s label to the current official listing, then test a private instance before inviting the whole community.
  8. Publish a fallback plan. For an undated map, name a currently playable substitute—The Island, The Center, Ragnarok or Valguero—and state whether the server will stay on it if the announced map slips.

Practical server-planning checklist

  • Record whether the map is free, paid or still announced, and keep the price qualified as a one-time secondary listing rather than a guaranteed current amount.
  • Tell players the map’s travel profile: compact early routes, long-distance exploration, water-separated islands or dense nearby biomes.
  • For a hard map, explain the intended difficulty before launch so new players do not mistake environmental pressure for a server failure.
  • For Genesis Part 1, verify transfer availability against the listed 4 September 2026 opening rather than relying on an older launch-day post.
  • For Dragontopia, Fjordur and Genesis Part 2, do not publish a firm launch date until an official announcement resolves the conflicting estimates.
  • Check the official storefront and Studio Wildcard channels immediately before purchasing paid content or locking a season calendar.

Common selection mistakes

Choosing by hype instead of player readiness

A dramatic setting does not make a good first map. Aberration and Scorched Earth are attractive precisely because they add pressure, but that pressure can obscure the basics for a new group. Start with The Island when teaching is the priority.

Confusing a large map with a better map

Ragnarok’s reported scale is a feature only if players enjoy longer travel and a broader frontier. A group that wants many environments close together may have a better experience on Valguero, despite its smaller footprint.

Treating a third-party date as a commitment

Dragontopia, Fjordur and Genesis Part 2 show why this is risky. Conflicting dates, partial rollouts and old roadmap entries can leave a server advertised for content that is not yet complete. Keep the date provisional until official information settles it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring ownership and regional pricing

A secondary listing of $14.99 or $29.99 is not a promise that every player will see that exact amount. Confirm the current store entry, region and ownership requirement before collecting subscriptions or setting a launch date.

Recommended picks by player type

Player or server goal Recommended map Reason
First-time players The Island Most approachable learning environment and manageable travel
Free alternative with island travel The Center Mid-sized, water-separated layout without a paid map
Large exploration server Ragnarok Approximately 2.5 times The Island’s land area
Variety with shorter transitions Valguero About 63 square kilometres with nearby biomes
Hard survival season Scorched Earth or Aberration Environmental scarcity or underground difficulty
Cooperative PvE endgame Extinction Ruined-Earth setting, Titans and an endgame recommendation
Waiting for announced content None yet; use a current fallback Several future maps still have conflicting or missing dates

As of 16 October 2026, the dependable default is still The Island. Move to Ragnarok or Valguero when scale or biome density matters more than onboarding, and choose the harder or paid maps only after confirming that the content, price and release status match your server plan.
