Alexa routines let you turn a spoken phrase, schedule, sound, presence event, alarm, or other trigger into a sequence of actions. In the Alexa app, you choose what starts the routine, add one or more actions, review the options shown for your devices, and save it. Creating the routine itself does not require smart-home hardware; compatible lights, plugs, thermostats, security systems, cameras, or other devices are needed only for actions that control them.

What an Alexa routine does

Amazon describes routines as shortcuts that group several Alexa actions together, so you do not have to issue separate requests. A single routine can combine smart-home control with information or media. For example, a morning routine could switch on compatible lights and then ask Alexa for a weather forecast.

Routines are configured in the Alexa mobile app. The account can contain up to 200 routines at one time, according to Amazon Customer Service. The precise triggers, actions, and settings shown can vary with your Echo model, connected devices, account configuration, app version, and region.

What you need before creating one

  • An Amazon account signed in to the Alexa app.
  • A supported trigger, such as a voice phrase or a time, for the event that should begin the routine.
  • For device control, a compatible connected product already added to Alexa and online.
  • For presence, sound, alarm, camera, thermostat, or security actions, hardware and permissions that support that particular feature.

You can build and save a routine without owning a smart bulb or plug. Those products become necessary only when an action is supposed to control something physical. Amazon lists lights, switches, thermostats, cameras, locks, and kitchen devices among connected product categories that can work with Alexa routines, subject to compatibility.

How to create an Alexa routine

  1. Open the Alexa app on your phone or tablet.
  2. Select More.
  3. Select Routines.
  4. Select Plus to create a routine.
  5. Select Add an event. Choose the trigger type and configure the details, such as a phrase, time, sound, presence condition, or alarm.
  6. Select Add an action. Choose what Alexa should do and complete any settings the app requests. Repeat this step to add more actions.
  7. Review additional settings presented for the selected event or action, including conditions, the target device, timing, or the Alexa Profile that should use the routine.
  8. Select Save.

The app does not expose exactly the same menus for every account. If an option is absent, the relevant device, permission, feature, or regional availability may not be present. Choose the closest supported event or action rather than assuming a missing control is available under another menu.

Choose the right trigger

The trigger determines when Alexa evaluates the routine. A predictable schedule is usually best for an everyday task, while an event-based trigger is more appropriate when the home itself should react to something happening.

Trigger type Best use Important dependency
Voice command On-demand scenes such as leaving home or bedtime The phrase must be spoken to an Alexa-enabled device and may be associated with an Alexa Profile.
Specific time of day Recurring lighting, wake-up, or temperature schedules The schedule and time zone configured in the app.
Sound detection Responding to a supported sound event A compatible listening device and the sound-detection feature enabled.
Presence Detection Starting an action when a person arrives or leaves Compatible hardware, location or presence configuration, and any permissions requested by Alexa.
Alarm Running actions when an Alexa alarm occurs An alarm configured in the same Alexa environment.
Visual ID-based Personal Presence Detection Profile-aware routines on supported Echo hardware A compatible Echo device and configured Visual ID; this is not available on every Echo model.

Voice triggers

Use a short phrase that is easy to say consistently, such as “Alexa, good morning” or “Alexa, leaving home.” Avoid phrases that sound like ordinary requests you might make for another purpose. If the routine should be usable by everyone in the house, assign it to the whole home rather than restricting it to one profile.

Time triggers

A time trigger is the most deterministic choice for scheduled behavior. Set the time and any repeat pattern offered by the app, then check that the target lights, plug, or thermostat is available before relying on it. A time routine does not require someone to remember a command.

Presence, sound, and identity triggers

These triggers can make an automation feel more natural, but they depend on sensors, device placement, permissions, and configuration. Presence Detection and sound detection are event-driven; Visual ID-based Personal Presence Detection additionally depends on a compatible Echo device and a configured visual profile. Treat the options shown in your app as the authoritative list for your account.

  • Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
  • Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
  • Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. • Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.

Add and order actions

After choosing the event, use Add an action to define the result. You can add multiple actions to one routine, allowing a single trigger to perform a sequence. The app may ask which device should receive an action, what mode to use, or what content Alexa should play.

Action category Examples documented by Amazon What to verify
Smart-home control Turn compatible devices on or off; adjust dimmable lights The device is compatible, online, and selected as the target.
Thermostat control Set a supported temperature or fan mode on a compatible thermostat The thermostat model and control exposed in your account.
Information Weather forecast, briefings, or traffic reports Location and account settings needed for useful results.
Media Play music The selected service, content, and playback device.
Communication Make a call Contacts, permissions, and the device that will place the call.
Skills Start an Alexa skill The skill is enabled and supports the requested action.
Entertainment and security Turn on compatible Fire TV devices; arm a connected home-security system Device compatibility and the security system’s supported mode.

Actions run as a grouped routine, but the exact order and timing controls depend on the action types presented by the app. If the app offers a delay or condition, configure it while editing that action and review the finished routine before saving.

Useful routines to build first

Good-morning routine

  1. Choose a time trigger for a weekday schedule, or choose a voice phrase if you want to start it manually.
  2. Add an action that turns on compatible bedroom or hallway lights.
  3. Add an action for a weather forecast.
  4. Review the repeat days, target light, and playback device, then save.

This combines the two behaviors Amazon uses to illustrate a routine: controlling compatible lights and requesting weather information.

Leaving-home security routine

  1. Choose a voice phrase or another supported trigger that you can use when leaving.
  2. Add the connected security system action and select its armed mode.
  3. Check that the selected system is the one linked to Alexa.
  4. Save and test the routine while you are still able to change the configuration.

Amazon says this type of routine can arm a connected home-security system but cannot disarm it. Keep disarming as a deliberate action in the security system’s own controls.

Scheduled thermostat change

  1. Choose a time trigger for the desired schedule.
  2. Select an action for the compatible Amazon Smart Thermostat or another supported thermostat exposed in your app.
  3. Choose the supported control, such as setting the temperature or changing fan mode.
  4. Confirm the target thermostat and save.

Temperature controls are device-specific. A thermostat may expose temperature setting but not every mode or adjustment you expect, so use only the controls displayed by Alexa.

Motion-activated patio light

Amazon describes Frustration-Free Automation as a way a compatible outdoor camera’s motion detection can be paired with a patio light. If Alexa creates such a routine during device setup, inspect it under More > Routines > Your Routines before relying on it. Confirm the camera event, the light target, and whether the routine is active.

When optional hardware is necessary

Automating a lamp with a smart plug

If the goal is to switch a conventional lamp on or off, an Alexa-compatible smart plug is an appropriate product category. The plug must be compatible with Alexa and rated for the appliance’s electrical load. Check the lamp’s wattage, the plug’s permitted load, and any restrictions for motors, heaters, or other high-draw equipment before connecting it.

A smart plug provides switching only. It will not dim a lamp unless both the plug and the lamp support a compatible dimming method. For dimming, use a compatible smart light or dimmable bulb that exposes brightness controls to Alexa.

Lighting routines

A compatible smart bulb or light is useful when the routine needs on/off control or dimming. Pair and name the light in Alexa first, using a clear room-based name. During routine setup, select that device as the action target and verify that the brightness control appears if dimming is required.

Temperature routines

A compatible thermostat is needed for scheduled temperature changes. The thermostat must be linked to Alexa and online; otherwise the routine can still exist but cannot complete the device action.

Other connected devices

Locks, cameras, switches, kitchen devices, security systems, and Fire TV devices may appear as actions when their integrations support routines. Availability is not universal across models. Do not buy hardware solely because a product category is listed; check the device’s Alexa compatibility and the specific controls it exposes.

Assign routines to people and devices

Amazon allows a routine to be assigned to the whole home or to an individual Alexa Profile. Whole-home assignment suits shared actions such as hallway lighting. Profile assignment is useful when the result should depend on who speaks or whose personal information is requested.

Voice ID phrases can support profile-aware behavior. Amazon also documents Visual ID Personal Presence routines for compatible Echo devices. Because Visual ID requires compatible hardware and setup, do not assume that every Echo can identify a person visually or run that type of routine.

Find and manage routines Alexa creates automatically

Frustration-Free Automation can create a routine while you set up a compatible smart-home device. Amazon says the Alexa app sends a notification when this happens. To inspect these routines, open More > Routines > Your Routines. Generated routines are labeled, and you can view, edit, deactivate, or delete them from that list.

Review an automatically generated routine before leaving it enabled. Check the trigger, the exact device action, and whether it should apply to the entire home or a profile. Deactivating is preferable to deleting when you may want to restore the same setup later.

Troubleshoot a routine that does not run

The routine never starts

  • Open the routine and confirm that it is active rather than deactivated.
  • Check the trigger phrase, scheduled time, repeat days, or event settings.
  • For presence, sound, alarm, or Visual ID triggers, verify that the required compatible device and feature are configured.
  • For a profile-specific routine, test with the matching Alexa Profile or change the assignment if the household needs shared access.

The routine starts but a device does nothing

  • Confirm that the device is powered, connected to the network, and visible in the Alexa app.
  • Open the device itself and test the same control manually.
  • Check that the routine action targets the intended room or device and that the device still has the same name.
  • For a plug, verify the appliance’s electrical load and that its physical switch is left in the on position.

An action or trigger is missing

Alexa only shows options supported by the account, app, device, and integration. Update or reconfigure the compatible device if appropriate, then revisit the routine. A missing option is not evidence that every model supports that feature.

A security routine behaves differently than expected

Use an arming action for a leaving-home routine. Amazon specifically states that routines can arm a connected security system but cannot disarm it. Keep disarming outside an unattended automation.

Limits, privacy, and reliability considerations

The published account limit is 200 routines. If you approach that number, remove obsolete or duplicate routines and inspect automatically generated entries before creating more.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Triggers involving presence, sound, Voice ID, or Visual ID use information about people or activity in the home. Configure only the detection features you need, review profile assignments, and avoid creating a routine whose action would be unsafe if it triggered unexpectedly.

Use time triggers for predictable schedules and event triggers when the home should respond to a real-world condition. For safety-critical devices, retain a manual control path and test the routine under the conditions in which it will operate. Connected-device availability, internet access, account settings, and device support can all affect execution.

Consumer routines versus the Alexa Routines Kit

The routine feature described here is the consumer workflow in the Alexa app. It is separate from the Alexa Routines Kit for skill developers. Amazon’s developer documentation scheduled that kit for discontinuation effective May 13, 2026; that developer change does not remove the ordinary app-based routine feature documented for Alexa customers.
