Alexa voice calling is Amazon’s Alexa Communication feature for making hands-free calls between supported Echo devices and the Alexa app, and for calling certain mobile and landline numbers. You can also use Alexa to call a contact or group. Drop In is a separate, optional intercom feature that connects automatically rather than waiting for the recipient to answer.
What Alexa voice calling means
Amazon describes Alexa Calling and Messaging as a way to call and send messages between supported Echo devices and the Alexa app. Amazon also says users can call Alexa contacts and groups, and place calls to mobile and landline numbers in the U.S., U.K., Canada, and Mexico at no additional cost. Availability can vary by device and feature. Amazon’s Alexa Calling and Messaging FAQ has the current feature details.
An Echo is not required for every Alexa call: the Alexa app is also a supported route. The recipient can be another Alexa Communication user, or—in supported countries and for eligible numbers—a phone number.

Use a voice command
Ask Alexa to call the person, device, number type, or group you want. Amazon gives examples such as “Call [Name’s] Echo,” “Call [Name’s] mobile,” “Call [Name] at work,” and “Call [group name] group.” Make sure Alexa can identify the intended contact or group. Amazon’s voice-calling instructions list supported examples and restrictions.

Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.

- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Use the Alexa app
- Open the Alexa app and tap More.
- Tap Communicate, then open your contacts.
- Choose a person or group and start the call.
Amazon’s app help describes this flow; menu labels may change as the app is updated. Check Amazon’s current app instructions if the labels differ.
Who you can call—and what Alexa cannot dial
Alexa Calling supports calls to Alexa Communication contacts and groups, as well as certain mobile and landline numbers in the U.S., U.K., Canada, and Mexico. These country and number limits apply to the documented phone-calling feature; they do not mean Alexa can place arbitrary calls worldwide. Amazon’s FAQ and calling help describe the supported destinations.

Alexa Calling is not an emergency-calling service. Amazon says it cannot call:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Emergency numbers such as 911
- Premium-rate numbers
- Three-digit or abbreviated dial codes
- Dial-by-letter numbers
- International numbers outside the supported countries
Amazon’s help pages give conflicting limits for phone contacts: its general Alexa Communication FAQ says outbound calls can be made to up to 100 phone numbers in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and the U.K., while its separate Alexa-to-Phone Contacts page says each household profile can choose up to 10 numbers. The pages do not explain how those limits relate. If a contact limit affects your setup, check the current Alexa app settings or contact Amazon support rather than assuming one number applies to every account. Alexa Calling versus Drop In
Alexa Calling is a conventional call: the recipient answers. Drop In is an optional intercom feature that automatically connects to a supported receiving device, so it is not the same as a call that rings and waits for an answer.
| Feature | Alexa Calling | Drop In |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | Calls Alexa contacts or, in supported countries, certain phone numbers. | Connects to a supported Alexa device as an intercom. |
| How the recipient connects | The recipient answers the call. | The connection starts automatically on the receiving device. |
| Permission | Uses Alexa Communication contacts and calling setup. | Optional; contact Drop In requires permission from both sides. |
| App and devices | Supported Echo devices and the Alexa app can be used for calls. | The Alexa app can Drop In on a device, but another device cannot Drop In on the Alexa app. |
Amazon describes Drop In as an intercom and explains its permissions and device behavior in its Drop In help. For camera-enabled Drop In, Amazon specifically documents the Echo Show 8 (2025 release) and Echo Show 11 (2025 release) as supporting audio or camera connections when Drop In is enabled. That model-specific guidance concerns Drop In camera behavior; it does not establish ordinary calling support for every Echo model. Amazon’s Echo Show camera guidance.

Which route should you use?
- Call another Alexa user: Use an available supported Echo or the Alexa app and select or name the contact.
- Call a phone: Use an Alexa voice command or app flow for an eligible number in the U.S., U.K., Canada, or Mexico; unsupported number types and emergency services will not work.
- Reach a household device like an intercom: Use Drop In only when it is enabled and the required permissions are in place, keeping in mind that it connects automatically.
- Decide whether you need an Echo: The Alexa app is another calling route. A screen-equipped Echo Show may matter if you specifically want camera-based Drop In, but verify the exact model’s support rather than inferring it from the Drop In camera guidance.
