ALDI Household for strata owners is individual contents insurance based on a sum insured; it does not replace insurance arranged for the strata scheme. CHOICE describes accidental damage as optional and identifies event limits, exclusions and conditions that can affect whether a claim is covered. Whether it suits you depends on your belongings, quote and policy wording, as well as what the scheme’s insurance already covers.
What ALDI Household (strata owners) covers
CHOICE describes the policy as sum-insured contents cover: you nominate an amount intended to reflect the cost of replacing your insured belongings. Its review lists events including theft, fire, flood and water runoff, storm and cyclone, storm surge, tsunami, explosion, earthquake, vandalism, riot, and certain impact or animal damage. These are policy terms, not a promise that every loss involving one of those events will be paid. Conditions, exclusions and limits apply.
CHOICE’s review also lists legal liability cover up to $20 million. Treat this as the limit CHOICE reports for the policy, not a guarantee that the same limit applies to every current quote or policy. Check the applicable PDS and your schedule.
Accidental damage is optional
CHOICE says accidental damage is an optional extra. Its review lists exclusions that include some breakage, minor dents, scratches and chips; power-surge damage unless caused by another insured event; and damage if the home is rented out. Check the wording for the precise definition of accidental damage and how the option applies to your circumstances.

Waiting periods and claim limits
CHOICE’s review reports a 72-hour waiting period for bushfire, flood or water runoff, among other listed events. It also reports up to $1,000 for keys and locks after a break-in. These are figures summarized by CHOICE; confirm the conditions and limits in the version of the PDS and schedule that apply to your policy.
The review notes per-item or overall limits for some valuables and portable contents, and that some additional cover is optional. A nominated sum insured does not by itself tell you whether a particular item is covered for its full replacement cost. Check item limits and any listing or optional-cover requirements against your own belongings.

How it fits with strata insurance
This policy is intended to insure an individual owner’s contents. Insurance for the strata scheme is separate. The practical question is not simply whether the building is insured, but which policy covers each item or part of the property, and who is responsible under the scheme’s policy, governing rules and local law.

It also describes cover for some permanent fixtures that the body corporate is not legally required to insure. Whether a fixture falls into that category depends on the policy wording and the rules in the relevant state or territory; do not assume that a fixture is covered just because it is inside your lot.

Before buying or renewing, compare the current scheme policy with your proposed contents cover and ask the strata manager or insurer to clarify uncertain building elements. NSW Government guidance explains owners corporations and strata roles, and provides separate information about strata finances, levies and insurance. Those pages describe NSW arrangements and should not be treated as rules for every Australian jurisdiction: NSW strata roles and responsibilities and NSW strata levies, finances and insurance.
Exclusions and conditions to check closely
- Common areas: CHOICE reports that contents kept in common areas are not covered. Consider where you store belongings and whether they are inside your lot.
- Theft: The review describes restrictions involving consent, tenants and unlocked entry in specified situations. Read the exact conditions, especially if you rent out your lot or share access.
- Water and fire events: Check the definitions, waiting periods and claim conditions for flood, water runoff and bushfire rather than relying on the event name alone.
- Accidental damage: If you want this protection, confirm it is included in your quote and review the listed exclusions, including the treatment of rented homes and power surges.
- Valuables and portable items: Compare per-item and aggregate limits with the value of what you own; check whether items need to be specified or require optional cover.
- Fixtures: Establish whether the scheme or individual policy is responsible for each relevant fixture under the policy wording and local rules.
How to compare ALDI Household with other policies
CHOICE describes ALDI Household as a white-label policy with cover identical to policies sold by Honey, Bank Australia and BOQ, while noting that prices differ. This does not show which policy will be cheapest for your circumstances, and it does not establish that any one option is best for every strata owner. CHOICE’s surfaced comparison does not provide its member-only rating and detailed price figures.

- Waiting periods and definitions for events relevant to your location.
- Theft conditions, particularly for tenants, unlocked access and shared areas.
- Limits for valuables, portable belongings, keys and locks, and eligible fixtures.
- How the policy settles claims and how its cover overlaps with the strata scheme’s insurance.
Because premiums and terms can change, obtain a current quote and read the current PDS and policy schedule before deciding. ALDI Insurance provides an official insurance product page and a Household Insurance PDS labelled ALDIHH-2405; the available PDS is listed as 2024, so check that the version applies to your quote or policy.

Is ALDI Household suitable for a strata owner?
It may be worth considering if you want individual contents cover and the current quote, sum insured, options and limits fit your needs. It is not possible to establish from the available comparison figures that it is the cheapest choice for you. The policy’s fit depends on the details CHOICE highlights—especially optional accidental damage, theft conditions, item limits and the boundary between your belongings and scheme-insured property.
