The best printer for wireless printing from an iPad is a Wi‑Fi printer with Apple AirPrint built in. Before buying, verify the exact model—not just the product family—in Apple’s AirPrint directory. Then connect the printer and iPad to the same Wi‑Fi network and print from an app that supports printing. AirPrint works without installing printer drivers on the iPad.

What to buy: the short answer

Look for a product described as a wireless printer with AirPrint. “Wireless” by itself is not enough: a printer can support Wi‑Fi and still lack Apple’s driverless printing protocol. Apple says many printer models include AirPrint and maintains a manufacturer-informed compatibility directory that is updated regularly. Check the exact model number in that directory before placing an order: Apple’s About AirPrint guide.

Choose the printer type and features around your workload rather than around the word “wireless.” A compact color inkjet is usually the most flexible choice for occasional home documents and photos; a monochrome laser is often the better fit for frequent text printing; and a color laser or office-oriented multifunction printer makes sense when speed, duty cycle and shared use matter. Those are category recommendations, not claims that one untested model is universally best.

Why AirPrint is the deciding compatibility feature

AirPrint is Apple’s technology for printing from an iPad without downloading or installing printer drivers. The printer advertises itself on the network, and a compatible iPad app can send a print job through the standard iPad print interface. Read Apple’s technical overview at support.apple.com/en-gb/102895.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Do not infer compatibility from a logo on a retailer page, an old review or a statement that a printer is merely “network ready.” Search Apple’s directory for the complete model designation, including any regional suffix. Manufacturers can sell visually similar variants with different networking features, and the directory information is supplied by manufacturers and may change as products are added or retired.

AirPrint is separate from a manufacturer’s optional iPad app. An app can add scanning, maintenance or cloud features, but the standard print command should not require a driver installation. If a listing says only that the printer works with a proprietary app, treat AirPrint support as unconfirmed until the exact model appears in Apple’s directory.

Top printer categories for different iPad users

Best general-purpose choice: AirPrint color inkjet multifunction printer

This category suits a home that prints a mixture of text, graphics, school pages and occasional photos. A multifunction design adds copying and scanning without requiring a separate device. Prioritize automatic two-sided printing if you regularly produce multi-page documents, and confirm that the scanner has the size and document-feeder arrangement you need.

Inkjet ownership requires more attention to consumables. Compare the cost and stated yield of every color cartridge or tank component, not just the printer’s purchase price. If the printer may sit unused for long periods, read the manufacturer’s maintenance instructions and consider whether a laser category would better match that pattern.

Best for mostly text: AirPrint monochrome laser

A monochrome laser is a logical category for reports, forms and invoices where color is unnecessary. Toner does not use the same liquid-ink system as an inkjet, so occasional users should still check the manufacturer’s storage and replacement guidance. Automatic duplexing reduces paper use and is especially valuable for long documents.

Laser printers can be physically deeper or heavier than compact inkjets. Measure the location with the paper tray extended and leave the ventilation clearance specified by the manufacturer. A monochrome model also cannot produce color highlights or photographs, so do not choose it if those are routine requirements.

Best for shared color workloads: AirPrint color laser or high-capacity inkjet

When several people print color documents every week, look beyond headline speed. Check the supported paper sizes, input capacity, automatic duplex behavior in color, network configuration and the price of complete replacement supplies. The printer must still be verified as an AirPrint model by its exact identifier; a business-oriented feature list does not establish Apple compatibility.

Best when space is the constraint: compact AirPrint printer

Small printers can fit a shelf or cabinet, but quoted dimensions often exclude an open output tray, a raised scanner lid or a rear paper path. Record the available width, depth and height, then compare them with the manufacturer’s installation diagram. Also check how paper is loaded: a front cassette is easier when the rear of the printer sits close to a wall.

Inkjet versus laser: a practical comparison

Characteristic Inkjet Laser
Typical strength Flexible color output and photo-capable media options Consistent text output and efficient batch printing
Color requirement Natural fit for color documents and images Choose color laser when color documents are frequent; monochrome models print black only
Idle-use consideration Follow the manufacturer’s maintenance advice when the printer is unused for long periods Check toner and drum replacement arrangements for the specific model
Space and handling Often available in compact designs; verify tray-open dimensions Can be heavier or deeper; verify installation clearance
What to compare financially All cartridge or tank components, stated page yields and replacement frequency Toner and drum costs, stated yields and whether those parts are separate

These are category-level trade-offs. The Apple support material establishes AirPrint and the printing workflow, not print speed, color accuracy, page yield or reliability for any particular model. Treat those figures as manufacturer specifications and compare them only for the exact model you are considering.

Feature checklist before you buy

  • Exact AirPrint listing: record the full model number and verify it in Apple’s compatibility directory.
  • Print technology: select inkjet, monochrome laser or color laser according to your real mix of text and color pages.
  • Automatic duplex: confirm that two-sided printing is automatic, not a manual page-turning procedure.
  • Multifunction hardware: decide whether you need scanning, copying or a document feeder; these functions are separate hardware features.
  • Paper handling: compare supported sizes, input capacity and whether the tray remains accessible in your planned location.
  • Network setup: check that the printer can join your Wi‑Fi network using the security mode and bands provided by your router.
  • Supplies: match ink, toner, drums and maintenance parts to the exact model. Do not assume cartridges from a similar-looking printer fit.
  • Regional availability: confirm that the model, replacement supplies and manufacturer support are available in your country.
  • Dimensions and noise: use the manufacturer’s installation measurements, including open trays and scanner clearance.

How to verify an AirPrint printer before ordering

  1. Copy the complete model identifier from the manufacturer’s specification page or the retailer listing.
  2. Open Apple’s About AirPrint page and follow its compatibility-directory link.
  3. Search for the exact identifier, including letters, numbers and regional suffixes. Do not rely on a family name alone.
  4. Cross-check the same identifier on the manufacturer’s current specification page for Wi‑Fi, duplex, scanner and supply details.
  5. Confirm the model is sold and supported in your region, then calculate the cost of the supplies you expect to replace.
  6. Save the manufacturer’s setup instructions. Apple’s general guidance cannot replace model-specific steps for entering a Wi‑Fi password or updating firmware.

If Apple’s directory does not show the exact model, treat AirPrint compatibility as unverified and choose another model or obtain written confirmation from the manufacturer. A retailer’s generic “works with iPad” claim is not equivalent to an AirPrint listing.

Set up the printer and iPad on Wi‑Fi

Apple’s general setup flow is simple, but the buttons on the printer vary by manufacturer. Use the printer’s documentation for its Wi‑Fi wizard, then follow these checks:

  1. Turn on the printer and complete its initial ink, toner or calibration procedure.
  2. From the printer’s control panel or setup utility, select your household or office Wi‑Fi network and enter its password. Apple’s model-independent guidance is at Connect an AirPrint printer to a Wi‑Fi network.
  3. On the iPad, open Settings, tap Wi‑Fi, and join the same network name used by the printer.
  4. Keep the iPad and printer on that same local network. A guest network, client-isolation setting or separate wireless network can prevent discovery even when both devices show a Wi‑Fi connection.
  5. Wait for the printer to finish connecting, then open an app that contains the document or image you want to print.
  6. Use the app’s Share or Actions button, choose Print, select the AirPrint printer, set copies or page options offered by the app, and tap Print. Apple documents this flow at Use AirPrint to print from your iPhone or iPad.

Apple notes that not every app supports printing. If Print is absent, check that app’s help or user guide rather than assuming the printer is incompatible.

Connections that do not satisfy this wireless iPad use case

AirPrint requires a network connection over Wi‑Fi or Ethernet. For the wireless scenario in this guide, the iPad and printer should communicate through the same Wi‑Fi network. Apple specifically excludes printers plugged into an Apple AirPort Base Station or AirPort Time Capsule USB port, and printers connected to a computer using Bluetooth, from the documented AirPrint arrangement. See the requirements in Apple’s AirPrint instructions.

A printer can still offer Bluetooth, Wi‑Fi Direct or USB for other workflows, but those features do not prove that the standard iPad Print command will find it. Treat them as additional connection methods, not substitutes for verified AirPrint support.

Troubleshoot when the printer is missing or the job fails

The printer does not appear in the printer list

  • Confirm the printer is powered on, has finished startup and shows the intended Wi‑Fi network.
  • Check Settings > Wi‑Fi on the iPad and compare the network name with the printer’s network status page.
  • Disable any temporary VPN or network-isolation feature that prevents devices on the same network from discovering one another, following your organization’s policy.
  • Restart the printer, iPad and router in that order, then try the print dialog again.
  • Recheck Apple’s directory for the exact model and consult the manufacturer’s Wi‑Fi troubleshooting instructions.

The Print command is missing

The app may not support printing. Try the document in an app known to expose the standard Share or Actions menu, or read the original app’s help. Apple’s procedure and this limitation are described at support.apple.com/en-gb/109349.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The job is queued but nothing comes out

  • Check the printer for an empty tray, paper-size mismatch, open cover, low supply warning or paused queue.
  • Verify that the selected paper size and orientation match the loaded paper.
  • Cancel the stuck job at the printer, restart the printer and send a one-page test.
  • If the printer recently changed networks, reconnect it to the same Wi‑Fi network as the iPad rather than only reconnecting the iPad.

Only some pages or options are available

Print controls are supplied by the app and the printer. Apple’s interface can expose copies and page ranges where supported, but an app may omit duplex, scaling or media controls. For advanced settings, use the manufacturer’s documented app or print workflow, while remembering that this is separate from basic AirPrint compatibility.

Plan the real cost of ownership

The purchase price is only one part of a printer decision. Estimate how many black-and-white and color pages you will print in a month, then compare the manufacturer’s stated yields and replacement prices for the exact model. Include every required component: color cartridges, black cartridges, toner, drums, maintenance boxes or printheads when applicable. A low-priced printer can be expensive if its supplies are small or unusually costly.

Match supplies by the complete model number. “Compatible” cartridges listed for a related model may have different electronics, physical dimensions or regional availability. Keep one spare set only when the manufacturer’s storage guidance and your expected usage justify it; excessive stock can age before you use it.

Paper also affects results and cost. Use the size and media type specified by the printer, especially for duplexing or photo output. Store paper flat and dry, and avoid loading more than the tray’s stated capacity. These handling details come from the printer manufacturer rather than Apple’s AirPrint documentation.

Network and privacy considerations

AirPrint is designed for a local network, so a shared home or office network should be configured deliberately. Put the printer on the network segment where authorized iPad users can reach it, while avoiding an untrusted guest network for a device that may contain queued documents. If the printer is managed by an organization, ask the administrator which network and discovery settings are permitted.

Before disposing of a multifunction printer, check the manufacturer’s instructions for clearing stored documents, address books and Wi‑Fi credentials. AirPrint itself does not determine how a particular printer stores scans, job history or credentials; those behaviors belong to the printer’s firmware and settings.

A decision process that avoids the common mistakes

  1. Define the workload: estimate text, color, photo, scan and copy needs instead of starting with a brand or discount.
  2. Select the category: choose inkjet, monochrome laser, color laser or multifunction hardware based on that workload.
  3. Shortlist exact models: record model numbers and discard listings that do not state enough detail to identify the variant.
  4. Verify AirPrint: check every shortlisted identifier in Apple’s directory.
  5. Compare ownership details: examine duplex behavior, paper handling, dimensions, network setup and complete supply costs.
  6. Confirm local support: verify regional availability, manuals and replacement supplies.
  7. Install correctly: connect the printer and iPad to the same Wi‑Fi network and test a one-page print from a supported app before relying on the printer for urgent work.

What “best” means in this guide

There is no defensible universal winner without verified model specifications, regional pricing and hands-on testing. The strongest evidence for this iPad use case is the AirPrint requirement and Apple’s documented workflow. Use the category table and checklist to choose a model that fits your workload, then verify that model’s current AirPrint status and manufacturer specifications. This approach prevents a common purchase error: buying a printer advertised as wireless that cannot be selected from the iPad’s standard Print menu.
