What the latest AirPods Pro 4 rumor says
On October 14, 2026, Antutu attributed a claim to leaker earlyappleleaks that Apple is weighing high- and low-tier AirPods Pro 4 models. The alleged premium version would look unlike today’s predominantly white AirPods, using a metallic silver-gray exterior on both the stem and earbud housing. The same report says availability could initially be limited to the United States.
Those details are unverified. Apple has not announced AirPods Pro 4, confirmed a two-model strategy, published a design image, or stated a price. The metallic finish and regional launch claim should therefore be treated as a possibility, not a specification.

Why cameras are part of the story
The two-tier leak is separate from a longer-running camera-AirPods program. In August 2026, 9to5Mac reported references in macOS 26.7 to a “Kino Sensor,” paired cameras in the two earbuds, active and passive capture modes, and a dedicated privacy indicator light.

The reported cameras are intended to sense the wearer’s surroundings and provide context to Siri and other AI tools, rather than record ordinary photographs or videos. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, as quoted by 9to5Mac, said the cameras are designed to “scan the surrounding environment and provide context to the Siri digital assistant and other AI tools.”

Two camera projects do not necessarily mean two retail models

This distinction matters. B790 and B798 are project identifiers, while the October leak describes possible low- and high-end retail tiers. Apple could cancel one project, merge the technology into a single product, or use different names. The available reporting does not establish that B790 will become the cheaper AirPods Pro 4 or that B798 will become the metallic premium version.

What “camera” could mean in everyday use
A camera used as an environmental sensor would behave differently from a camera on a phone. Siri or another AI system could use visual context to understand what is in front of the wearer, recognize a change in surroundings, or combine visual information with head movement and audio. The reported passive mode suggests the earbuds could sample selected environmental changes without continuously saving conventional video.

Infrared sensing was mentioned earlier by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who described a possible “more significant” hardware upgrade involving at least one tiny infrared camera. MacRumors also reported potential links to gesture control and Vision Pro spatial-audio applications. Those January–February 2026 reports conflict in some details with the later software findings, which describe cameras in both buds, so the final hardware configuration remains unsettled.

Buy now if you need earbuds this year
AirPods Pro 3 is the practical choice if you need noise-cancelling earbuds, an Apple-compatible model, or a replacement immediately. The reported 2027 camera target gives no confirmed 2026 launch date to plan around, and Apple could change or cancel either development track.
Wait if environmental AI is the deciding feature
Waiting makes sense only if you specifically want the rumored sensing, gesture, or AI-context capabilities and can accept an unknown price, design, battery impact, privacy behavior, and release date. A metallic premium model, if real, could also be region-limited at launch.
What to verify if Apple announces AirPods Pro 4
- Whether Apple sells one model or separate standard and premium tiers.
- Which model, if any, includes cameras and whether both earbuds carry them.
- Whether the privacy light is mandatory during all camera operation and what passive sensing records.
- Whether camera features work with Siri, third-party AI tools, Vision Pro, or only Apple’s own software.
- Official prices relative to the current $249 AirPods Pro reference point.
- Launch countries and whether the metallic finish is exclusive to a premium version.
Until those details appear in an Apple announcement and product specifications, the two-model AirPods Pro 4 story is best understood as an active rumor layered onto a separate, more consistently reported 2027 camera project.
