The right AirPods choice starts with fit, not the generation number. Choose AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation if you want an open-fit earbud and noise control, AirPods Pro 3 if you want silicone tips and the strongest listed earbud feature set, or AirPods Max 2 if you want over-ear headphones. AirPods 5 suit open-fit listening when ANC is not your priority. Older AirPods 2, AirPods 3, AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods Max remain on Apple’s comparison page, but their current availability, pricing and support depend on the exact listing and market.
Start with the physical design
AirPods are not one simple upgrade ladder. Apple’s current comparison page (checked October 13, 2026) shows several distinct designs, charging-case versions and generations. The physical fit changes how the earbuds feel, how much outside sound reaches you and whether you can wear them comfortably for hours.
Open-fit earbuds: AirPods 4 and AirPods 5
AirPods 4 and AirPods 5 use an open-fit style rather than sealing the ear canal with a silicone tip. This is the natural starting point for listeners who dislike the plugged-up sensation of in-ear earbuds. The trade-off is that open earbuds generally let more environmental sound in, so you should choose the exact configuration based on whether noise cancellation is important.

Silicone-tip in-ear earbuds: AirPods Pro 3 and Pro 2
AirPods Pro 3 use removable silicone tips and are listed with five sizes: XXS, XS, S, M and L. That range gives you more opportunities to find a stable seal. AirPods Pro 2 are also shown in Apple’s comparison, with four listed tip sizes. A sealed fit can improve isolation and bass consistency, but it is not automatically more comfortable; people who dislike ear tips should try an open-fit model first.

Over-ear headphones: AirPods Max 2
AirPods Max 2 are full-size over-ear headphones. They are a form-factor decision, not simply a higher generation of earbuds. Choose them when you want ear cups and a headband, rather than trying to rank them directly against AirPods 4 or AirPods Pro 3.

Which model fits each priority?
Choose AirPods 4 with ANC for open-fit noise control
AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation are the most direct match for someone who wants an open earbud but still wants ANC and Adaptive Audio. Apple lists the H2 chip, up to four hours per charge with ANC and up to 20 hours when the case is included. The case variant shown for this configuration supports USB-C wireless charging.
This is the conditional recommendation for commuters, office users and travelers who cannot tolerate silicone tips. ANC performance still depends on the seal created by the earbud’s open shape and on the surrounding sound. Treat Apple’s noise-control figures as manufacturer comparisons under specified test conditions, not as independent laboratory rankings.

Choose AirPods Pro 3 for sealed fit and the broadest listed earbud features
AirPods Pro 3 are the best fit for readers who specifically want silicone tips, ANC and the listed Pro feature set. The comparison lists the H2 chip, five tip sizes, IP57 resistance, a MagSafe/USB-C case and a case speaker. Apple lists up to eight hours per charge with ANC.
Apple also states that Pro 3 deliver up to twice the ANC of the original AirPods Pro and AirPods 4 with ANC. That is Apple’s own comparison, tested under IEC 60268-24 conditions; it is not an independent measurement. Use it as a statement of Apple’s claimed relative performance rather than a promise that every listener will hear a twofold improvement.
Choose AirPods Max 2 when you want over-ear comfort or isolation
AirPods Max 2 make sense when you prefer ear cups over earbuds. Apple lists up to 20 hours of battery life with ANC enabled. Their battery figure cannot be compared directly with an earbud’s per-charge number because the product uses a different physical design and charging routine.
Choose AirPods 5 when open fit matters more than ANC
AirPods 5 are the open-fit option for buyers who do not put ANC first. Apple lists the H2 chip and a standard USB-C case, while also showing a distinct Wireless Charging Case version. Confirm which case is in the listing: the same generation can have different charging capabilities.

Consider an older model only after checking the exact listing
AirPods 2, AirPods 3, AirPods Pro 2 and the original AirPods Max appear in Apple’s comparison. The available evidence does not establish a current price, remaining retail stock, device condition or support duration for any of them. An older model can be sensible if the seller, warranty, battery condition and case variant are clearly documented, but do not assume that an entry on Apple’s page means it is currently available everywhere.
Noise cancellation, Transparency and Adaptive Audio
Noise-control labels must be read for the exact model. In the supplied Apple comparison, ANC and Adaptive Audio are listed for AirPods 4 with ANC, while ANC is listed for AirPods Pro 3. Do not infer a feature from the family name alone; verify the variant and its software requirements.
- ANC: reduces some outside sound electronically. The result varies with fit, frequency and environment.
- Transparency: is useful when you need to hear surroundings without removing the earbuds. Confirm that it is listed for the model you are buying.
- Adaptive Audio: is listed for AirPods 4 with ANC in the comparison. It combines noise-control behavior with awareness of the surrounding environment, but supported hardware and software may be required.
Apple’s comparative ANC claims use controlled test conditions. They should not be presented as independent sound measurements or as a universal ranking of every AirPods model.

Battery life: read per-charge and case figures separately
The most useful numbers in Apple’s current snapshot are up to four hours per charge with ANC for AirPods 4 with ANC, up to eight hours per charge with ANC for AirPods Pro 3 and up to 20 hours with ANC enabled for AirPods Max 2. These are manufacturer estimates. Apple cautions that battery life changes with device settings, environment, usage and other factors.

- Automatically on, automatically connected
- Easy setup for all your Apple devices
- Quick access to Siri by saying “Hey Siri”
- Double-tap to play or skip forward
- New Apple H1 headphone chip delivers faster wireless connection to your devices
“Per charge” describes the earbuds or headphones before recharging. “With the case” describes the additional listening time supplied by the charging case. They are different measurements and should not be placed in the same ranking. If you need long uninterrupted sessions, the Pro 3 and Max 2 figures offer more headroom on paper; if you routinely put earbuds back in their case, the case total may matter more than a single-session estimate.

Case features vary within a generation. Apple shows AirPods 5 with both a standard USB-C case and a separate Wireless Charging Case version. AirPods 4 with ANC are shown with a USB-C wireless charging case variant. The Pro 3 case is listed with MagSafe and USB-C charging and a speaker.

Durability and resistance: IP ratings are not waterproofing
Apple lists IP54 for AirPods 4 variants and IP57 for AirPods Pro 3. These ratings concern resistance under controlled test conditions. Apple’s caveat says the resistance applies to non-water sports and exercise and can decrease with wear.
That means sweat and light exposure are not the same as swimming, showering or deliberate submersion. Do not call either model waterproof. Keep charging contacts dry, avoid charging wet earbuds and replace worn tips or damaged parts rather than relying on the original rating indefinitely.
Compatibility and advanced features
Features such as hearing assistance, Spatial Audio and newer software functions may require supported Apple hardware, a particular operating-system version or eligibility. The comparison page does not establish that every feature works with every phone, tablet or computer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Identify the exact AirPods model and case variant.
- Check the operating-system and device requirements for the feature you want.
- Confirm that your device supports the required setup, controls and updates.
- If buying for another person, verify their device model and software before ordering.
Without those checks, a feature can be present in the product description but unavailable on the intended device.
A practical buying checklist
- Fit: open AirPods 4 or 5, silicone-tip Pro 3 or over-ear Max 2.
- Noise control: decide whether ANC, Transparency or Adaptive Audio is essential, then confirm it for the exact variant.
- Session length: compare the stated per-charge figure, not just the case total.
- Charging: verify USB-C, wireless or MagSafe support and the presence of a case speaker.
- Resistance: use IP ratings as controlled-condition guidance, never as permission to submerge the product.
- Compatibility: check device, operating-system and eligibility requirements for advanced functions.
- Seller details: for older models, verify condition, warranty, battery health information and regional availability.
Bottom line: match the model to your ears and use
Buy AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation for an open fit plus ANC, AirPods Pro 3 for silicone tips, the longest listed earbud battery figure and the broadest listed Pro features, AirPods Max 2 for an over-ear design, or AirPods 5 for open-fit listening when ANC is not your priority. Treat older generations as separate bargains to investigate, not automatic steps on a current upgrade ladder. Apple’s lineup and software support can change, so confirm the exact model, case, seller and requirements at checkout.
