If one AirPod dies well before the other, first determine whether it is actually discharging faster or simply failing to charge. Unequal listening time, a microphone fixed to one side, Siri and call activity, dirty charging contacts, liquid exposure, firmware or setting behavior, and an aging battery can all produce the same symptom. A repeatable imbalance that remains after verified charging, cleaning, settings checks and a reset usually indicates battery wear or hardware damage rather than a normal percentage quirk.

Use the sequence below to separate a charging-bay problem from an earbud problem before you pay for service or a replacement.

What a left-right battery mismatch means

AirPods do not always consume power identically. The active microphone, Bluetooth workload, voice-assistant requests and whether you use one earbud alone can shift more work to one side. A small difference after a short session is not automatically a fault. The useful signal is a repeatable gap under comparable conditions, especially when the same earbud repeatedly reaches zero while its partner still has substantial charge.

Unequal listening and single-ear use

When you use only one AirPod, that earbud handles the complete audio connection and its battery accumulates cycles while the other remains in the case. Repeating the habit on the same side can make the batteries appear to age at different rates. Alternating sides and returning both buds to the case when finished prevents that usage pattern from concentrating wear.

Microphone assignment, calls and Siri

AirPods can use either microphone, but a forced left or right setting makes the selected side handle call and voice input. Calls, dictation, “Hey Siri” and other voice-assistant activity can therefore drain one side disproportionately. Even with both earbuds in your ears, one microphone may be used more often than the other.

A charging contact that is not making a connection

Lint, skin oil or debris in a case bay can leave an AirPod resting in the case without actually charging. The case may show a plausible overall percentage while one bud remains low. This is a charging-state problem, not rapid chemical discharge.

Settings, firmware and optional features

Automatic Ear Detection, Find My Network, Spatial Audio with head tracking and voice-assistant listening add background or sensor work. Their effect varies by AirPods generation and operating-system version, so they are best tested one at a time rather than disabled indiscriminately. Firmware behavior can also change after an update.

Battery wear, liquid damage or another hardware fault

The cells are very small and cannot deliver their original runtime forever. A bud that charges to a full indication but then drops rapidly after clean contacts, controlled tests and a reset may have a worn cell, liquid damage or an electronic fault. No authoritative failure-rate percentage establishes how common this is; diagnosis depends on the repeatable behavior of your pair.

Verify the symptom before changing anything

  1. Start with a known charge. Connect the case to power and allow it to charge. If the case itself is nearly empty, Apple’s charging guidance is to charge the case with the earbuds inside for at least 15 minutes before testing.
  2. Record each percentage. Open the case beside the paired iPhone or iPad and note the left, right and case levels. You can also view the levels in the Batteries widget or the Bluetooth device panel.
  3. Run a controlled listening interval. Play the same type of audio at a steady volume for a known period, then check both percentages again. Avoid calls or Siri during this baseline.
  4. Repeat the measurement. A one-time mismatch can be a display or charging-state artifact. A gap that returns across multiple sessions is meaningful evidence.

Make sure each AirPod is really charging

Clean the contact surfaces safely

  1. Remove both earbuds from the case and inspect the charging contacts on each stem and the corresponding surfaces in the left and right bays.
  2. Use a dry, lint-free cloth or a small electronics-safe, soft brush to remove visible lint and debris. Work gently so you do not bend contacts or push material farther into the bay.
  3. Do not spray liquid, cleaner or compressed moisture directly into the case. Keep the case and earbuds dry, particularly if there has been sweat, rain or a spill.
  4. Place both earbuds back in the case and press each down lightly until it seats. Leave them there for at least 30 seconds, the first-line interval specified by Apple Support, then open the case near the iPhone or iPad and check that the left and right indicators both show charging.

If one side still does not appear as charging, remove and reseat it several times while watching the individual status. A case can have enough energy to display a percentage while a dirty or damaged contact prevents that particular earbud from receiving it. If the case was low, repeat the check after the 15-minute charge described above.

Apple AirPods Pro 2nd Gen (USB-C) - Left Replacement AirPod (A3048) - White (Renewed)
  • Replacement Apple AirPods Pro (2nd Generation) (USB-C) AirPod - left side (A3048). Easy to pair with your existing AirPods set, with pairing instructions included.
  • Package includes 1 left Apple AirPod Pro 2nd Generation (USB-C) (A3048) and pairing instructions in generic envelope or box.

Distinguish a dirty contact from a damaged bay

After cleaning, place the suspect earbud in the opposite bay only if your model and case design allow a clear comparison without forcing it; do not interchange left and right buds in a way that could damage the case. More useful is observing whether the same bay fails with the correct earbud or whether the failure follows the earbud during the controlled isolation test below. A problem that stays with the bay points to the case; one that follows the bud points to the bud.

Isolate the earbud from the case and pairing system

  1. Charge both buds and the case, then close the lid briefly so the case records their state.
  2. Put the suspect AirPod in your ear and leave the other AirPod in the closed case. Play audio continuously at your normal volume.
  3. After a measured interval, check the suspect side’s percentage. Repeat the same interval with the other AirPod while its partner remains in the case.
  4. Compare the two results under similar volume and content. If the suspect side still loses power much faster while operating alone, the issue follows that earbud rather than shared stereo processing.

This test also avoids a misleading conclusion from a stereo session in which one microphone or sensor happens to be active more often. It does not prove that a cell is defective by itself, but it tells you where to focus the remaining checks.

Correct microphone and usage settings

Set the microphone to Automatic

  1. Open Settings on the paired iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap Bluetooth.
  3. Tap the information button beside your AirPods.
  4. Open Microphone and select Automatic, not a permanently forced left or right option.

Automatic lets the system choose the available microphone instead of assigning all voice work to one side. Run the same isolated listening test after changing it; the setting is a possible contributor, not a guaranteed cure.

Alternate one-ear listening

If you regularly wear one AirPod for calls or podcasts, switch sides between sessions and put the unused bud back in the case. This spreads charge cycles and avoids making a single battery the permanent primary device. A bud left outside the case continues to consume some power, so store it in the case rather than on a desk when you are not using it.

Update firmware and reset the pair

Give firmware a chance to update

AirPods firmware updates install in the background; there is no user-facing “update now” button. Put both earbuds in their case, connect the case to power, keep the lid closed and leave the case near the paired iPhone or iPad with Bluetooth enabled. Allow enough time for the devices to remain together and charging.

Forget and reset when the imbalance persists

  1. On the iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Bluetooth, tap the information button beside the AirPods and choose Forget This Device or Forget This Device after opening the device details, depending on the operating-system wording. Confirm the removal.
  2. Place both earbuds in the case, close the lid for about 30 seconds, then open it.
  3. For a case with a physical setup button, press and hold that button for about 15 seconds until the status light changes from amber to white. Buttonless cases use the model-specific reset gesture described in Apple’s instructions; do not force a button that your case does not have.
  4. Keep the case open near the device and pair the AirPods again when they appear.
  5. Reapply only the settings you need, then repeat the controlled charging and isolation tests.

Resetting clears custom assignments and pairing information. If the same physical side still drains rapidly after a clean, verified charge and a reset, software is less likely to be the root cause.

Test optional features without guessing

Disable one feature at a time, run the same listening interval, then restore it if there is no measurable change. This turns a vague battery complaint into a comparison you can reproduce.

  • Automatic Ear Detection: In the AirPods Bluetooth details, switch it off temporarily. You lose automatic pause and resume when removing an earbud, so treat this as a diagnostic test.
  • Find My Network: If your model exposes this option in the AirPods details, test with it off only if the recovery benefit is less important to you. Disabling it reduces finding support for the earbuds.
  • Spatial Audio and head tracking: Turn Spatial Audio off from the AirPods controls in Control Center or Settings and compare the same content. Immersive processing can reduce runtime on supported models, particularly with head tracking enabled.
  • “Hey Siri” and voice activity: If one side is used heavily for voice commands, test with the voice-assistant listening option off. You give up hands-free activation during the test.

Feature availability and menu labels depend on the AirPods generation and the iOS or iPadOS version. These changes are not universal fixes; they help identify whether a feature load is contributing to your particular pattern.

Put advertised battery figures in context

MacRumors reports maximum listening claims of up to six hours from a single charge for AirPods 3 and up to six hours for AirPods Pro, with lower figures when Spatial Audio or head tracking is enabled. Those are model-specific advertised maximums, not a diagnostic promise for every listener. Volume, calls, temperature, microphone use, feature settings and battery age all change real-world results. Use your own matched, repeatable interval rather than treating six hours as a pass/fail threshold.

Recognize liquid or physical damage

Sweat, rain, condensation and spills can affect contacts or internal electronics even when the case still lights up. Look for a history of moisture, intermittent charging, unusual heat, corrosion or behavior that began immediately after exposure. Do not continue charging a visibly wet device. Let external surfaces dry completely and avoid inserting tools into the charging bay; persistent symptoms after moisture exposure warrant professional inspection.

When service or a single replacement is the sensible choice

Arrange Apple service or another reputable authorized repair option when all of the following are true:

  • The same earbud repeatedly loses charge faster during controlled tests.
  • Its contacts and the corresponding case bay are clean, dry and visibly seating correctly.
  • The case has been charged sufficiently and the earbud is confirmed to show charging.
  • Microphone assignment and optional feature tests do not explain the gap.
  • The pair has had an opportunity to receive firmware and has been reset and paired again.

Service pricing and availability depend on your country, exact generation, warranty and AppleCare status. Ask for an inspection rather than assuming the entire set must be replaced.

Replacing only one AirPod

A single replacement can be practical when the case and surviving earbud are healthy. Match the exact AirPods generation, model and left/right side; visually similar buds from different generations are not interchangeable substitutes. The replacement must then be placed in the existing case and paired through the normal setup process so the set can synchronize. Confirm compatibility with Apple or the seller before ordering, and provide the case serial or model details if requested.

Why opening an AirPod is a poor first repair

AirPods are primarily adhesive-held and were not designed for routine battery replacement. Separating the shell can damage the battery, speaker, seals or flex cables, and reassembly may not restore the original protection. iFixit cautions that undertaking such a repair is at your own risk. A battery-replacement kit is therefore a niche option for experienced repairers, not a safer alternative to diagnosis and service.

A practical decision tree

  1. Does the bud appear as charging? If no, clean, reseat and charge the case and buds; if it still fails, suspect the contact or case bay.
  2. Does the imbalance repeat under the same test? If no, monitor it; if yes, continue.
  3. Does the problem follow the earbud when you isolate it? If it follows the earbud, investigate settings, firmware, battery wear or liquid damage. If it stays with the bay, the case needs attention.
  4. Is the microphone forced to one side or is one-ear use habitual? Set Automatic and alternate sides, then retest.
  5. Did a firmware opportunity, reset and feature-by-feature test change the result? If not, treat persistent rapid loss as a hardware case and compare service with a generation-matched single-earbud replacement.

Checks to record before contacting support

  • Exact AirPods generation and whether the affected side is left or right.
  • Case, left and right percentages at the start and end of a measured session.
  • Whether each bud visibly reports charging when seated.
  • Whether the fault follows the earbud or remains with the case bay.
  • Microphone setting, one-ear usage pattern and any optional features changed during testing.
  • Firmware version, reset date and any exposure to sweat, rain or liquid.
  • Warranty or AppleCare coverage and the country where service is requested.

These observations let a technician distinguish a worn cell from a contact, case or configuration problem and reduce the chance of paying for the wrong part.
