If your AirPods 5 case will not charge wirelessly, first verify that it is the AirPods 5 Wireless Charging Case, not the standard Charging Case. Then place the wireless model flat and centered on a supported Qi-certified or MagSafe charger, with the status light facing up and the lid closed. If that fails, test the USB-C port for at least 15 minutes. Cable charging works with both AirPods 5 case variants and quickly separates a placement or charger problem from a broader charging fault.

A brief status light followed by darkness does not necessarily mean charging stopped. Use the case model, charger response, battery reading and wired test together before resetting the AirPods or requesting service.

1. Confirm which AirPods 5 case you have

Wireless charging is not included with every AirPods 5 case. Apple lists two separate cases, and their charging capabilities are different. Check the model before buying a new pad or treating a lack of wireless response as a failure.

Case Model number Physical identifiers Wireless charging USB-C charging
Charging Case for AirPods 5 A3529 USB-C port and front status light Not supported Supported
Wireless Charging Case for AirPods 5 A3530 USB-C port, front status light and external speaker Supported with compatible wireless chargers Supported

Apple also identifies different earbud compatibility for the two variants. Use Apple’s AirPods identification guide to verify the model number and the matching earbuds. If your case is model A3529, a wireless charger cannot make it charge wirelessly; use USB-C instead. If it is A3530, continue with the placement checks below.

2. Place the Wireless Charging Case correctly

Qi-certified mat or MagSafe charger

  1. Disconnect the case from anything else and remove objects that could keep it from sitting flat.
  2. Put the Wireless Charging Case flat on the center of the Qi-certified charging mat or MagSafe charger.
  3. Keep the lid closed and turn the case so the status light faces upward.
  4. Watch the status light when you first set the case down. Apple says it can show the current charge level for about eight seconds, then turn off while charging continues.
  5. If no light appears, lift the case and reposition it at the center. Test again with the charger connected to a known-working power source.

The light going dark after the initial indication is not, by itself, evidence that power stopped. Confirm charging by checking the case battery on a paired Apple device or by comparing the battery level after the case has remained on the pad for a while.

Apple Watch charger

For an Apple Watch charger, Apple’s placement instruction is more specific: center the AirPods 5 Wireless Charging Case flat on the charger, with the lid closed and the status light facing up. Re-seat it if the initial status indication does not appear. A charger designed for Apple Watch use is not a reason to place the case on its edge or leave the lid open.

Apple describes the compatible charging methods and placement behavior on its Charge your AirPods page. The wireless case must be the A3530 variant; changing position cannot add wireless capability to the A3529 case.

3. Test USB-C charging to isolate the fault

USB-C charging is available on both AirPods 5 case variants, so it is the most useful cross-check when wireless charging appears unreliable.

  1. Plug a compatible USB-C cable firmly into the case.
  2. Connect the other end to a USB power source that you know works, such as a charger or powered USB port.
  3. Check that the connector is fully inserted at both ends and that the power source is switched on.
  4. Leave the AirPods and case connected for at least 15 minutes. Apple’s no-charge guidance uses this minimum period before checking again.
  5. After the 15-minute interval, check the status light and the case battery level on a paired Apple device.

Do not assume the cable is defective simply because the light is not constantly illuminated. The light reports status briefly in some charging situations. If the case responds to USB-C but not to a wireless pad, troubleshoot the pad, alignment and case compatibility first. If neither method produces a battery increase after the basic checks, the available evidence does not identify a particular failed component; proceed to cleaning, reset and service steps rather than guessing which part to replace.

USB-C result What it establishes Next action
Case charges by USB-C, but not on the pad The case can accept wired power; the wireless path, charger support or placement remains the main area to check. Reconfirm model A3530, use a supported charger, center the case and test another known-working power source.
Neither USB-C nor wireless charging works Basic checks have not restored charging, but they do not prove which internal part is at fault. Clean according to Apple’s instructions, reset only after earlier checks and contact Apple support if the problem remains.
USB-C works only when the cable is held at an angle The connection is not reliably seated. Stop relying on that position; inspect the port and cable, clean safely and seek service if a firm connection still cannot be made.

4. Interpret the status light correctly

Color and timing matter. Apple’s charging guidance states that green means fully charged and amber means less than one full charge remains. These colors indicate the reported charge state; they are not, by themselves, a diagnosis of a damaged wireless coil, battery or charger.

Light behavior Apple’s meaning or condition How to use it while troubleshooting
Green The case or AirPods being reported are fully charged. Wireless charging may already have completed. Check which item is being reported by noting whether the AirPods are inside the case.
Amber Less than one full charge remains. Leave the case on the supported charger or connect USB-C and check again after the charging interval.
Brief indication, then no light The light can turn off after showing status; Apple specifies about eight seconds on a Qi-certified mat or MagSafe charger. Do not remove the case solely because the light went dark. Verify battery level instead.
Pulsing amber On the latest firmware, Apple describes this when the AirPods or case are below 95% charge. Treat it as a firmware-dependent charging-status indication, not a universal fault code.
Flashing amber On the latest firmware, Apple describes this when the AirPods are below 95% and the case is below 25%. Charge the case and AirPods, then reassess. The percentages describe the light behavior, not a confirmed hardware failure.
No light Apple notes that no light can mean the AirPods need charging before use. Try USB-C for at least 15 minutes, then check the battery level on the paired device.

The pulsing and flashing descriptions are tied to Apple’s latest-firmware guidance and can change with firmware behavior. Do not use the 95% or 25% figures as a claim that the case is defective or as a replacement threshold.

What the lid and earbuds change

When AirPods are inside and the lid is opened, the case light reports the AirPods’ charge. With the AirPods removed, it reports the case’s charge. This distinction prevents a common misread: a green or amber light may describe the earbuds rather than the case you are trying to replenish. Check the battery reading with the intended item in or out of the case before deciding that the case ignored the charger.

5. Check the battery on a paired Apple device

Use the battery status view available for your paired AirPods on an Apple device. Check it before placing the case on the charger and again after the USB-C or wireless charging test. A rising percentage confirms that power is reaching the case even if the front light is no longer illuminated. A percentage that remains unchanged after a properly connected 15-minute wired test warrants the next troubleshooting steps.

Not compatible with metal cases, cases with metal plates or credit cards, or non-Mag cases

If the device cannot show a current reading, keep the case connected by USB-C and use the light as a secondary indicator. Do not infer a zero charge solely from a dark light: Apple’s guidance allows the light to turn off after its brief status display.

6. Check the charger, cable and connections

Wireless setup checks

  • Confirm that the charger is Qi-certified, or use a compatible MagSafe charger or Apple Watch charger as appropriate for the A3530 case.
  • Make sure the charging pad itself has power. Test its power connection with another device if available, without treating that test as proof that every wireless charger supports AirPods.
  • Keep the case flat and centered, lid closed, status light facing up.
  • Remove the case from the pad and place it again if the initial status light does not appear.

USB-C setup checks

  • Use a compatible USB-C cable and a USB charger or port that works with another device.
  • Seat both cable ends firmly. A loose connection can prevent charging even when the cable looks undamaged.
  • Try a different known-working USB power source before concluding that the case itself is at fault.
  • Allow the full 15-minute charging period recommended by Apple before evaluating the result.

These checks are deliberately separate from a reset. They preserve your custom settings and reveal whether the problem follows the case, the wireless charger or the cable/power source.

7. Clean the charging path safely

Debris in the case’s charging port can prevent a USB-C plug from seating correctly. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance includes cleaning the case when charging fails. Follow Apple’s cleaning instructions rather than improvising tools or liquids.

  • Do not insert metal objects into the USB-C port.
  • Do not pour or inject liquid into the port or charging case.
  • After cleaning as Apple directs, reconnect the cable firmly and repeat the 15-minute test.

Cleaning the port addresses a connection obstruction; it does not turn the standard A3529 case into a wireless model and does not establish that an internal battery or charging circuit has failed.

8. Reset only after charging and cleaning checks

Apple recommends resetting AirPods when charging problems continue after the basic checks. Resetting removes custom settings, so you will need to configure those settings again afterward. Use the reset procedure in Apple’s If your AirPods won’t charge guidance rather than applying an unverified button sequence.

  1. First confirm the case model, charger placement, USB-C connection and 15-minute charging interval.
  2. Clean the port according to Apple’s instructions.
  3. Reset the AirPods using Apple’s current procedure.
  4. Pair them again if required, then repeat one wired and one supported wireless charging test.

A reset can clear a configuration problem, but it cannot add wireless hardware to A3529 or prove that a physical component is healthy. If the same symptom returns by both charging methods, stop repeating resets and arrange service.

9. Use the symptom to choose the next test

Symptom Most useful interpretation Action
The case never responds on a wireless pad It may be the standard A3529 case, off-center, on an unsupported charger or not receiving power from the pad. Verify the model number, charger support and power, then re-seat the A3530 case flat with the light up and lid closed.
The light appears for about eight seconds and turns off This can be normal status-light behavior while charging continues. Check the battery level on the paired device instead of using the dark light as the only test.
The case charges wirelessly but not by USB-C The wireless path works, so inspect the USB-C cable, power source, connector seating and port debris. Try a known-working cable and source, clean safely and retest for at least 15 minutes.
The case charges by USB-C but not wirelessly The case can receive wired power; compatibility, pad support or alignment is the priority. Confirm A3530, use Qi-certified/MagSafe or the specified Apple Watch placement and test another powered charger.
Both methods fail after the basic checks The cause is not established by home tests. Clean, reset once using Apple’s guidance and contact Apple support or service if charging still does not resume.
Only the earbuds’ charge changes, not the case’s The light or battery view may be reporting the earbuds rather than the case. Remove the earbuds and check the case status separately, then repeat the charging test.

10. When to contact Apple support

Contact Apple support or arrange service when the verified Wireless Charging Case still will not charge wirelessly after correct placement and a known-working supported charger, or when neither wireless nor USB-C charging produces a battery increase after the 15-minute test, safe cleaning and a reset.

When you request help, provide the case model number (A3529 or A3530), whether the earbuds were inside or removed, the charger type, the light behavior, the result of USB-C charging and the battery reading before and after testing. This information distinguishes a compatibility or setup issue from a problem that requires inspection without claiming a specific failed part.

Apple’s official charging and identification references are Charge your AirPods, If your AirPods won’t charge and Identify your AirPods. They contain the current model, charging, cleaning and reset guidance; firmware updates can also affect the exact status-light behavior.
