AirPods 5’s biggest changes over AirPods 4 are stronger Apple-rated noise cancellation, an improved resistance rating, and—on the Wireless Charging Case version—wireless charging, a Find My case speaker, volume swipe controls, and longer Apple-estimated ANC battery life. Those case-specific features are not included with every AirPods 5 configuration. If you are comparing noise-cancelling models, the key choice is AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case versus AirPods 4 with ANC.
Which AirPods configurations are being compared?
Apple sells AirPods 5 in two configurations: with a standard USB-C charging case or with a Wireless Charging Case. AirPods 4 also comes in a standard version and an ANC version. The comparison below focuses on AirPods 4 with ANC where noise cancellation is relevant; its battery figures should not be applied to standard AirPods 4.

Battery numbers are Apple’s “up to” estimates, not guaranteed day-to-day results. Apple says battery life varies with settings, environment, usage, and other factors. Its AirPods 4 ANC test used pre-production hardware, an iPhone 16 Pro Max, prerelease software, 50% volume, and specified audio and noise settings. How much better is AirPods 5 noise cancellation?
Apple says AirPods 5 provides up to 1.5 times more Active Noise Cancellation than AirPods 4 with ANC, measured in accordance with IEC 60268-24. That is a manufacturer test claim, not an independent listening comparison. It applies to the ANC-equipped models, not to a comparison with standard AirPods 4.

Both generations use Apple’s H2 chip, so the chip itself is not a new-generation upgrade. The distinction supported by Apple’s comparison is its stated ANC performance, rather than a new chip generation.
Does AirPods 5 last longer on a charge?
Only the AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case has a longer published ANC listening estimate than AirPods 4 with ANC: up to five hours per charge and up to 22 hours with its case, compared with up to four and 20 hours, respectively. AirPods 5 with the standard USB-C case is also rated for up to four hours with ANC and 20 hours with the case, matching the AirPods 4 ANC figures.

A speaker to help find the case
The Wireless Charging Case has a speaker for Find My, which can help you locate the case. This feature belongs to that case configuration; it is not included with the standard AirPods 5 case.
Volume control by swiping
AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case adds volume adjustment by swiping up or down on the stem. Apple describes this as a first for its open-ear form factor. It is not listed for the standard-case AirPods 5 configuration.

What does IP57 versus IP54 mean?
Apple lists AirPods 5 as IP57 and AirPods 4 as IP54. The numbers indicate different levels of resistance to dust and water exposure; they do not mean either product is waterproof. Treat the ratings as resistance classifications, not permission to submerge or deliberately expose the earbuds to water.

Should you upgrade or choose AirPods 5?
Choose AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case if…
- You want Apple’s stronger ANC claim compared with AirPods 4 with ANC.
- You want wireless charging, the case speaker for Find My, or stem volume swipe.
- You value the longer published ANC battery estimates: up to five hours per charge and 22 hours with the case.
- The IP57 rating is relevant to how you use your earbuds.
Keep AirPods 4 with ANC if…
- Your current fit, battery life, and noise control work well for you.
- The AirPods 5 case-specific additions do not solve a problem you have.
- You are considering an upgrade solely because the newer generation exists; the available evidence does not establish an independent sound-quality or fit advantage.
