AirPods 5 brings Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) to both of its configurations, while AirPods 4 offered ANC only in its higher-tier version. The key choice is whether you want the standard AirPods 5 charging case or the wireless-charging case’s added convenience and longer listed battery life. Apple’s noise-cancellation and battery figures are manufacturer claims, not independent comparative test results.
What changed from AirPods 4 to AirPods 5?
The biggest change is ANC availability: both AirPods 5 configurations include ANC. With AirPods 4, you had to choose AirPods 4 with ANC to get it; the standard AirPods 4 does not have ANC. Apple says AirPods 5 removes up to 50% more external noise than AirPods 4 with ANC. On its comparison page, Apple describes the result as up to 1.5 times more ANC when tested under IEC 60268-24. These are Apple’s claims, not independently verified measurements. Apple’s announcement and comparison page describe a new multiport acoustic architecture and improved computational audio as contributors.
Apple also lists Adaptive Audio, which adjusts between ANC and Transparency, and Conversation Awareness, which lowers media volume when you start speaking. It describes Transparency as more natural. For sound, Apple cites a new acoustic architecture and next-generation Adaptive EQ, and claims richer, more detailed audio across a wider range of ear geometries, along with more immersive Personalized Spatial Audio. Those are product claims; the available evidence does not establish independent comparative listening results.
AirPods 5 configurations: what does the higher-priced version add?
At launch in the US, AirPods 5 cost $129 and AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case cost $149. That $20 launch-price difference is not a statement of current pricing. Both versions include ANC, but the case and controls differ.

| US launch price | $129 | $149 |
Battery figures are Apple’s “up to” estimates, not guaranteed runtimes. Apple says battery life varies with settings, environment, and use, and its comparison includes testing notes for preproduction products. The case-total figures include listening time replenished by the case; they are not single-charge runtimes. USB-C charging requires a compatible charger. For wireless charging, Apple specifies a Qi-certified charger; the case also works with Apple Watch chargers. Apple’s comparison page provides the feature and battery details.
How do AirPods 5 compare with the right AirPods 4 model?
It matters which AirPods 4 you have or are considering. Comparing AirPods 5 with the standard AirPods 4 is not an ANC-to-ANC comparison: only AirPods 5 has ANC in that pairing. For a like-for-like ANC comparison, use AirPods 4 with ANC.

| Comparison | AirPods 4 | AirPods 4 with ANC |
|---|---|---|
| ANC | No | Yes |
| ANC listening on one charge | Not applicable | Up to 4 hours |
| ANC listening with case | Not applicable | Up to 20 hours |
Apple’s comparison lists the AirPods 4 with ANC at up to four hours of ANC listening on one charge and up to 20 hours with its case. Apple’s claim of up to 50% more external noise removed, or up to 1.5 times more ANC under IEC 60268-24, specifically uses AirPods 4 with ANC as its baseline. It does not establish the same measured comparison against standard AirPods 4.

There is no universal upgrade answer: the value depends on what you own, how much you want ANC, and the current price difference. AirPods 5 may be the more relevant option if you want ANC but own standard AirPods 4, or if the wireless case’s charging options, stem volume control, or additional listed battery time matter to you.

Apple announced AirPods 5 on September 9, 2026, with availability beginning September 18. Its announced US prices were launch prices, not a current-price check. MacRumors reported on September 14, 2026, that Apple had stopped selling both AirPods 4 versions directly while third-party listings remained available at that time. Retail availability and prices can change, so compare listings at the time you buy. MacRumors’ September 2026 buyer’s guide covers that contemporaneous retail context.
If you are upgrading from AirPods 4 with ANC, the clearest stated reasons to move to AirPods 5 are Apple’s claimed ANC improvement and, for the higher-priced configuration, its case features. The evidence here does not establish an independent performance or fit advantage that would make the upgrade worthwhile for every listener.
