AirPods 5 bring active noise cancellation (ANC) to Apple’s open-ear AirPods line, but reviewer accounts suggest their standout is the balance of more effective noise reduction and an open fit—not the isolation or sound quality of AirPods Pro 3. Apple announced the earbuds on September 9, 2026, with U.S. launch prices of $129 for the standard model and $149 for the Wireless Charging Case version. Those are launch prices, not a statement of current availability or pricing.
What’s new with AirPods 5?
Apple says both AirPods 5 configurations add ANC to its open-ear design. The company claims up to 50 percent more external-noise reduction than AirPods 4 with ANC; that is Apple’s comparison claim, not an independently verified result for every listener or environment. Retail availability was set to begin September 18, 2026.
MacRumors writer Juli Clover reported using AirPods 5 for a week and found their ANC noticeably better than AirPods 4 ANC. Tom’s Guide also described useful ANC and improved sound in its review, but its reviewer could still hear some high-frequency sounds, typing, and conversation. Those observations point to the central trade-off: ANC can reduce surrounding noise without making an open-ear earbud seal off the ear.
How good is AirPods 5 noise cancellation?
The published reviews describe a meaningful improvement over AirPods 4, but not complete quiet. In Tom’s Guide’s two-day review, the reviewer tested ANC with a 68 dB city-sounds track and said some horns and indistinct chatter remained audible. That is one reviewer’s test setup and listening impression, not a universal measurement of performance.

Compared with AirPods Pro 3, the distinction is both fit and performance. AirPods 5 have an open-ear fit; Pro 3 use a more isolating fit. MacRumors judged AirPods 5’s sound muddier than Pro 3, particularly in the low mids, while Tom’s Guide said AirPods 5 ANC did not match Pro 3 and that some surrounding sounds remained audible. These are reviewers’ comparative judgments, not controlled measurements across both products.
What impressed reviewers about AirPods 5?
More capable ANC without an in-ear seal
For listeners who prefer an open-ear fit, the appeal is the addition of ANC without switching to an ear-sealing design. MacRumors found ANC noticeably improved over AirPods 4 ANC, while Tom’s Guide found it useful despite audible sounds breaking through. The result is best understood as noise reduction, not silence.

Sound reviewers found improved over AirPods 4
Tom’s Guide’s reviewer described AirPods 5 as richer and more detailed than AirPods 4 in their listening sessions. MacRumors, by contrast, noted muddier low mids than AirPods Pro 3. These impressions use different comparisons, so they do not establish a single universal ranking: one describes a perceived improvement over AirPods 4, the other a limitation against Pro 3.
AirPods 5 vs. AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case
At U.S. launch, Apple listed the standard configuration at $129 and the Wireless Charging Case version at $149. Apple says the upgraded case works with Apple Watch chargers, Qi-compatible chargers, and USB-C, and adds swipe volume control on the earbud stem. The standard case does not have those stated wireless charging options or stem volume swipe.

The battery figures need care: Apple states up to five hours of ANC playback and up to 22 hours using the Wireless Charging Case. MacRumors reports four hours for the standard configuration and five for the upgrade. Because the sources differ on the standard model, its ANC runtime cannot be stated definitively here.
Which AirPods 5 configuration makes more sense?
- Choose the standard configuration if the lower U.S. launch price matters most and USB-C charging is sufficient.
- Choose the Wireless Charging Case version if you want Apple Watch or Qi charging, stem volume swipe, or Apple’s stated up-to-22-hour playback claim using the case.

What to know about compatibility and smart features
Apple says full feature functionality requires a compatible Apple device running current software. Live Translation and Apple Intelligence features also have device, language, software, and regional conditions, so their availability should not be assumed for every iPhone, language, or location. Reviewers’ listening observations do not establish how these features perform across all supported setups.
