AirPods 5 can pair with Apple devices across the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and Apple TV families, provided they meet Apple’s current software requirements. Basic Bluetooth audio can also work with earlier Apple software and non-Apple devices, but some features require newer software—and Apple Intelligence features need a separately supported device, language and region.
Which devices can pair with AirPods 5?
Apple’s AirPods 5 specifications list these device families with the latest version of their respective operating systems:
- iPhone with the latest iOS
- iPad with the latest iPadOS
- Mac with the latest macOS
- Apple Watch with the latest watchOS
- Apple TV with the latest tvOS
Apple does not give a comprehensive list of older model cutoffs on that page, so a specific iPhone, iPad, Mac or Watch model cannot be confirmed from the family names alone. Check the device’s ability to run the current required operating system rather than relying on an assumed model-year cutoff.
Pairing is not the same as full feature support
AirPods 5 can be used as Bluetooth headphones with Apple devices running earlier software and with non-Apple devices, but Apple cautions that functionality may be limited. Apple says to use AirPods 5 with an Apple device running the latest operating system for full feature functionality.

For Apple-device setup, Apple’s AirPods pairing guide covers iPhone and iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and Apple TV. It says AirPods set up with one Apple device connect automatically to other Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account. The guide applies to iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, tvOS 27 and watchOS 27 or later.
Which AirPods 5 features need Apple Intelligence?
Apple says some hands-free intelligent features available with AirPods 5 require pairing with an Apple Intelligence-supported iPhone. This is a separate requirement from basic AirPods pairing: a device may support Bluetooth audio without qualifying for Apple Intelligence.

What else can limit Apple Intelligence features?
Device eligibility alone does not guarantee that every feature is available. Apple says Siri and the device must be set to a supported language, and that feature availability can vary by language and region. Check Apple’s current requirements and availability information for the specific feature and location.
Live Translation
Apple says Live Translation requires a compatible Apple device running the latest operating system, compatible AirPods with the latest firmware, and Apple Intelligence turned on. Availability depends on language and region. Apple’s AirPods 5 launch announcement does not provide a complete country-by-country or language-by-language AirPods 5 matrix; consult Apple’s live feature information for the current details.

Choose the right compatibility check
| What you want to do | What to check |
|---|---|
| Listen over Bluetooth | Pair with an Apple device or non-Apple device; Apple warns that functionality may be limited on earlier software and non-Apple devices. |
| Use the full AirPods 5 feature set | Use an Apple device running the latest operating system. |
| Use an Apple Intelligence-dependent feature | Check the host device against Apple’s Apple Intelligence eligibility list, then confirm the required OS, language, region and any feature-specific conditions. |
Apple’s operating-system and feature requirements can change as software is updated. For a particular older device or a feature with regional restrictions, verify the current Apple support pages rather than treating broad device-family compatibility as a guarantee.
