AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) is the more capable model, adding ANC, Transparency, Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, wireless case charging, Apple Watch charging and a case speaker for Find My. Standard AirPods 4 costs less at launch and has the longer quoted battery life when the ANC model’s noise control is enabled.
Both earbuds use an open-ear design, so the ANC version does not isolate sound like an in-ear model with silicone tips. Choose standard AirPods 4 for quiet listening and USB-C charging; choose AirPods 4 with ANC if you will use its listening modes or want the more versatile case. The U.S. prices below are Apple’s September 2024 launch prices, not current retailer quotes.
AirPods 4 vs. AirPods 4 with ANC at a glance
The two models share the same basic earbud platform and several Apple audio features. The price difference pays for noise-control modes and a more capable charging case rather than a different fit: both remain open-ear earbuds.

Feature and battery specifications come from Apple’s AirPods 4 specifications and AirPods 4 with ANC specifications. Apple announced both on September 9, 2024, with availability beginning September 20, 2024.

What AirPods 4 with ANC adds
Active Noise Cancellation
ANC electronically reduces outside sound while you listen. It is the defining upgrade over standard AirPods 4 and the reason to consider the $50 launch-price premium. The earbuds can reduce the need to turn up music in noisy surroundings, but the open-ear fit still lets some external sound in. This is not the same level of physical isolation provided by an in-ear earbud that seals the ear canal.
Transparency mode
Transparency lets outside sound pass through so you can hear people, announcements and your surroundings without removing the earbuds. Standard AirPods 4 does not list Transparency as a listening mode.
Adaptive Audio
Adaptive Audio combines noise control with awareness of your surroundings, automatically balancing the two as conditions change. It is intended for situations such as moving between a quiet office and a busy street, where permanently blocking or permanently amplifying outside sound is inconvenient.

Conversation Awareness
Conversation Awareness detects when you begin speaking and adjusts the listening experience so a brief conversation is easier without manually removing an earbud or opening a control. It is another convenience feature exclusive to the ANC model in this comparison.
Apple lists these four additions—ANC, Transparency, Adaptive Audio and Conversation Awareness—alongside shared features such as Voice Isolation, Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking and Adaptive EQ. The standard model therefore retains Apple’s core processing features; it is not a stripped-down audio product.
The charging cases are substantially different
Standard AirPods 4 case
The standard case charges over USB-C. Apple lists Find My support for the case and earbuds, but its standard specification does not list a built-in case speaker. If you already charge devices with a USB-C cable and do not need wireless charging, this case covers the essentials.

AirPods 4 with ANC case
The ANC case also has USB-C, and adds Qi-certified wireless charging and Apple Watch charging. You can place it on a compatible Qi charger or use an Apple Watch charger instead of plugging in a cable. A built-in speaker provides an audible way to help locate the case with Find My.

The speaker and charging options are case-level upgrades: they remain useful even when you are listening in a quiet room and never switch on ANC.
Battery life depends on the mode you use
Apple’s quoted figures show exactly what the ANC trade-off is. Standard AirPods 4 are rated for up to five hours on one charge and up to 30 hours with the charging case. AirPods 4 with ANC are rated for up to four hours per charge with ANC enabled, or up to five hours with noise control off. With the case, the ANC model is rated for up to 20 hours when ANC is enabled and up to 30 hours when noise control is off.

These are estimates, not guarantees. Apple tested the ANC model with pre-production earbuds in July and August 2024, paired with pre-production iPhone 16 Pro Max units and prerelease software. The music test used 50 percent volume. Apple warns that battery life varies with settings, environment and usage; calls, high volume and frequent mode changes can produce different results. Both models have an open-ear fit
Neither version uses a silicone ear tip that seals the ear canal. That can feel more comfortable for listeners who dislike in-ear pressure and lets more environmental sound remain audible, but it also limits isolation. Adding ANC to AirPods 4 reduces noise electronically; it does not turn the earbuds into sealed in-ear monitors.

This is a fit decision as much as a feature decision: ANC AirPods 4 can be the better open-ear choice, while an in-ear model is more appropriate when blocking outside sound is the priority.

Audio and smart features both models share
Buying the standard model does not remove Apple’s main computational audio features. Apple lists the following for both AirPods 4 versions:
- Voice Isolation: processing intended to make your voice clearer during supported calls.
- Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking: compatible content can maintain a spatial sound field as you move your head.
- Adaptive EQ: sound is adjusted to the fit and listening conditions the system detects.
The ANC model’s advantage is control over outside sound, not a separate set of core Apple audio features. If your listening is mostly podcasts, music and calls in quiet places, the standard model delivers the same listed shared features without paying for modes you may rarely activate.
Durability: IP54 is resistance, not waterproofing
Apple gives both AirPods 4 versions an IP54 rating. Apple describes this as dust, sweat and water resistance under controlled laboratory conditions for non-water sports and exercise. The rating does not make either model waterproof, and resistance can decline with normal wear.
- Use the rating as protection against sweat and incidental splashes during ordinary exercise.
- Do not submerge the earbuds or case, use them for swimming, or treat heavy rain as a supported condition.
- Keep charging contacts dry before placing the earbuds in the case.
The IP54 rating is the same for both models, so durability does not justify choosing the ANC version.
Price and value: understand what the launch premium bought
Apple’s September 9, 2024 U.S. announcement listed AirPods 4 at $129 and AirPods 4 with ANC at $179. Those are historical launch prices, not a current retailer-price comparison. Availability began September 20, 2024. Current prices, discounts and regional taxes can differ, so check the price in your market before buying.

The premium is easiest to justify when you will use ANC or the upgraded case repeatedly. If your routine is USB-C charging at a desk and listening in quiet rooms, standard AirPods 4 avoids paying for unused capabilities.

Which model fits common daily situations?
Commuting, cafés and open offices
Choose AirPods 4 with ANC if reducing surrounding noise is a regular need. Transparency and Adaptive Audio are useful when you must switch between listening and awareness. Remember that the open fit will not isolate as strongly as a sealed in-ear model, particularly in very loud environments.
Home listening and quiet workplaces
Standard AirPods 4 is usually sufficient when external noise is already low. You still receive Voice Isolation, Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking and Adaptive EQ, and you get Apple’s five-hour single-charge estimate without enabling a noise-control mode.
Frequent wireless charging
The ANC model is the clear choice if your charging routine uses a Qi pad or Apple Watch charger. Standard AirPods 4 requires USB-C according to Apple’s specification.
Finding a misplaced case
Both specifications list Find My support, but the ANC case adds a speaker that can play a sound for locating. Apple requires iOS 18 or later for Find My functionality. If your case often disappears in a bag, car or room, this can matter independently of audio quality.
Long listening sessions
Compare the battery condition you will actually use. With noise control off, both models are rated for up to five hours per charge and 30 hours with the case. With ANC enabled, the ANC model’s estimates fall to four hours per charge and 20 hours including the case.
Exercise and sweat
Both have the same IP54 resistance rating under Apple’s controlled laboratory conditions. Choose based on noise-control and charging needs rather than expecting one to withstand more water.

A practical buying checklist
- Decide whether you need active noise control. If ANC, Transparency, Adaptive Audio or Conversation Awareness will be used regularly, select AirPods 4 with ANC. If not, continue evaluating the standard model.
- Check your preferred charging method. USB-C works on both. Qi-certified wireless charging and Apple Watch charging are available only with the ANC case.
- Consider locating the case. Both support Find My, while the ANC case adds a speaker. Confirm that your iPhone or other Apple device meets the iOS 18 requirement for Find My functionality.
- Set a realistic battery expectation. Use the ANC model’s four-hour and 20-hour figures when ANC will stay on. Use the five-hour and 30-hour figures when noise control is off.
- Evaluate the fit before expecting isolation. Both are open-ear. If you need a sealed fit or the strongest reduction of outside sound, compare an in-ear option instead.
- Verify the current local price. The $129 and $179 figures are U.S. launch prices from 2024, not a guarantee of what a retailer charges today.
Common buying mistakes
Assuming ANC makes the earbuds fully isolating
ANC is an electronic noise-control feature, while fit determines how much sound is physically blocked. Because AirPods 4 remain open-ear, choosing the ANC model does not provide the sealed isolation associated with silicone-tip in-ear earbuds.
Comparing battery numbers without the mode
“Up to five hours” applies to the ANC model with noise control off. When ANC is enabled, Apple’s estimate is up to four hours per charge and 20 hours with the case. Always attach the operating condition to the number.
Treating launch pricing as a current deal
The $50 difference is useful for understanding the original positioning, but it is not a live price comparison. Retail pricing and regional taxes change after launch.

Calling IP54 waterproof
IP54 describes laboratory-tested resistance, not permission to submerge the earbuds or use them while swimming. Apple also notes that resistance decreases with wear.
Bottom-line decision
Buy AirPods 4 when you want the lower launch-priced model, listen mainly in quiet surroundings, prefer the quoted five-hour/30-hour battery figures with no noise control, and are happy charging by USB-C.
Buy AirPods 4 with ANC when ANC, Transparency, Adaptive Audio or Conversation Awareness will improve your routine, or when Qi/Apple Watch charging and a locating speaker are worth the premium. It is the more versatile case and feature set, but its ANC battery estimates are shorter and its open-ear fit cannot match the isolation of a sealed in-ear design.
