AirPods (3rd generation) are a better fit for listeners who want lightweight, open-fit earbuds than for anyone seeking a snug seal or noise isolation. Apple’s headline features include Adaptive EQ, Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking, an IPX4 rating and up to six hours of listening per charge—but those battery figures are estimates, and some features work best with compatible Apple devices.
What kind of earbuds are AirPods 3?
Apple introduced the third-generation AirPods in 2021. They use the H1 headphone chip and Bluetooth 5.0, and have a custom high-excursion driver and a custom high dynamic range amplifier. Unlike earbuds with silicone tips, AirPods 3 sit in the ear without sealing the ear canal.
That open fit is the central trade-off. It may suit someone who dislikes the plugged-in sensation of sealed earbuds, but it does not provide the passive isolation of an ear tip that blocks the canal. Fit is personal: the available review evidence cannot predict how securely or comfortably they will sit in every listener’s ears.
How comfortable and secure is the fit?
Apple described the launch design as “lightweight and contoured,” saying it was shaped to sit at an angle intended to improve comfort and direct audio into the ear. That is Apple’s product description, not independent proof that the fit works for everyone.

SoundGuys’ review, marked reviewed in November 2022, identified fit and isolation as notable weaknesses. Its scores—3.9 for comfort and fit and 0.6 for isolation—reflect that publication’s rating system, not universal outcomes or laboratory measurements. People whose ears do not hold the fixed shape securely may find an open-fit design less dependable than earbuds with interchangeable tips.
How do AirPods 3 sound, and what features do they offer?
Apple lists Adaptive EQ, which adjusts audio based on how the earbuds fit, and Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking. Spatial Audio depends on compatible hardware, software, content and supported apps; Apple notes that not all content is available in Dolby Atmos. These capabilities are not a guarantee that every song or app will sound spatialized.
SoundGuys rated portability 9.5 and gave the earbuds an overall 6.4/10. Its review describes the third generation as an improvement over the 2019 model in design, water resistance, case and software features, while also flagging sound quality and features limited to Apple devices among areas for improvement. Those are SoundGuys’ judgments under its own rubric, rather than a universal ranking.

How long does the battery last?
Apple’s technical specifications give maximum listening estimates, not guaranteed real-world runtimes. They vary with settings, environment, usage and other factors.

Are AirPods 3 water-resistant?
Apple rates both the earbuds and case IPX4 for sweat and water resistance. Apple describes this protection as intended for non-water sports and exercise, cautions that resistance is not permanent, and does not say the product is suitable for swimming. IPX4 should not be read as waterproofing.

They can function as Bluetooth headphones with non-Apple products, but Apple says functionality is limited. SoundGuys likewise notes that many features are limited to Apple hardware. Basic Bluetooth playback is therefore a different proposition from access to the full Apple-device experience.
Apple lists controls including a single press to play or pause and answer a call, two presses to end a call, three presses to skip back, and a press and hold for Siri. Its specifications also list “Hey Siri,” Live Listen audio, headphone levels and Headphone Accommodations, with supported Apple hardware and software required for some functions.

Are AirPods 3 worth buying?
They make the most sense if you specifically want an unsealed fit, use Apple devices and can confirm the earbuds sit securely in your ears. Their advertised strengths are a compact wireless design, Adaptive EQ, Spatial Audio support, exercise-oriented IPX4 resistance and Apple’s battery estimates. The same open design means little isolation, and the feature set is less complete outside Apple’s ecosystem.
AirPods 3 are an older generation: Apple’s comparison page, accessed October 7, 2026, lists newer generations while continuing to show third-generation Lightning and MagSafe case variants. A specification or comparison page does not confirm that a particular retailer currently has them in stock. Any buying decision should be based on a live listing that identifies the case version, seller and condition. Apple’s original US launch price was $179 on October 18, 2021; that is a historical launch price, not a current price.
