Airlines are upgrading in-flight Wi-Fi, but they are not all choosing Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite service. American Airlines, Lufthansa Group and Singapore Airlines have announced Starlink plans; other airline systems use Viasat, Intelsat or the European Aviation Network, and Panasonic Avionics and Intellian have announced an aviation terminal for Eutelsat’s OneWeb network.

The important distinction is that a provider announcement does not mean every aircraft is already equipped. The airline, aircraft type, rollout date and rules for free access all matter when you want to know whether your particular flight will have Wi-Fi.

Which airlines have announced Starlink Wi-Fi?

Three major airline groups in the announcements covered here have outlined Starlink rollouts. Each plan has its own timetable and aircraft scope, so an announced deployment should not be taken as confirmation that Starlink is installed on every flight.

American Airlines

In October 2026, American said it would expand its earlier Starlink plan for more than 500 Airbus aircraft to its entire mainline fleet of more than 1,000 Airbus and Boeing aircraft. Its fleet breakdown listed more than 500 Airbus narrowbodies, more than 400 Boeing narrowbodies and 130-plus Boeing widebodies. Installations are planned to begin in early 2027. American cited terminal capability of up to 1 Gbps per antenna; that is a system specification, not a promised speed for an individual passenger. American’s October 2026 announcement describes the expanded plan.

Lufthansa Group

Lufthansa Group announced plans on February 9, 2026, to equip around 850 aircraft. It expected the first Starlink-equipped flights in the second half of 2026 and set 2029 as the target for completing the rollout. The group said access would be free for status customers and Travel ID users, in all travel classes. Those dates and eligibility terms are the company’s stated plan, not confirmation that every aircraft is already equipped. Read Lufthansa Group’s announcement.

Singapore Airlines

Singapore Airlines announced on May 4, 2026, that a progressive Starlink rollout would start in the first quarter of 2027 and was expected to finish by the end of 2029. The named aircraft are A350-900 long-haul, A350-900 ultra-long-range and A380 models. The airline said eligible passengers would continue to receive its unlimited complimentary Wi-Fi on Starlink-equipped aircraft. See Singapore Airlines’ rollout announcement.

Is Starlink replacing every airline Wi-Fi provider?

No. Airline connectivity remains a mix of providers and networks. An airline can also use more than one system across its fleet, or have an existing Wi-Fi service while planning a separate retrofit program.

Viasat said Vueling began complimentary Wi-Fi in October 2025 on more than 80 connected A320 aircraft. Viasat describes the European Aviation Network as combining its S-band satellite with a complementary ground network operated by Deutsche Telekom. In an April 15, 2026 announcement, Viasat reported more than one million sessions and a 13-percentage-point increase in customer satisfaction related to in-flight Wi-Fi. These are figures reported by the provider, not an independent comparison with other airline systems. Read Viasat’s Vueling update.

OneWeb-connected aviation equipment

Panasonic Avionics and Intellian announced a LEO-only aviation terminal designed to connect to Eutelsat’s OneWeb network. Will your flight have free Wi-Fi?

Not necessarily. Free access depends on the airline’s policy and, in some cases, the account or loyalty status you use. It can also depend on whether the aircraft operating your flight has the relevant equipment. A fleet-wide target or rollout announcement does not tell you which system is installed on a specific trip.

  • American: Its 2025 announcement tied complimentary Viasat/Intelsat Wi-Fi to AAdvantage membership. The separate 2026 Starlink announcement did not state access terms.
  • Lufthansa Group: The announced Starlink plan provides free access to status customers and Travel ID users, in all travel classes.
  • Singapore Airlines: The airline said eligible passengers would continue to receive unlimited complimentary Wi-Fi on Starlink-equipped aircraft; the announcement does not define eligibility in the rollout statement.
  • Vueling: Viasat reported complimentary Wi-Fi on more than 80 connected A320 aircraft; the cited announcement does not specify additional access conditions.

Before travel, check the airline’s current Wi-Fi information and any account requirements, then consider the aircraft type and whether the service is available on your particular flight. A carrier’s announcement is useful for understanding its plan, but it cannot guarantee equipment on an individual departure.

Do the published speed figures show which service is fastest?

No. The figures announced by providers and airlines describe different things and are not a like-for-like comparison of what passengers experience. American cited up to 1 Gbps per Starlink antenna, while Panasonic cited up to 195 Mbps and latency below 100 milliseconds for its OneWeb-connected aviation terminal. Those are system capability figures, not guaranteed per-passenger speeds, and the announcements do not provide a consistent independent test across providers.

Real onboard performance can depend on the aircraft installation, how many passengers are online, network conditions and the activity being used. The figures are useful as descriptions of announced equipment, but they do not establish which service will be faster on a particular flight.

Why are airlines investing in Wi-Fi?

Connectivity has become part of the travel experience airlines use to attract and retain customers. In a 2024 survey announcement, Viasat said it surveyed more than 11,000 people worldwide who had flown in the previous 12 months: 75% said quality in-flight Wi-Fi would make them more likely to select or rebook with an airline, and 22% said they would not consider a long-haul route without connectivity. These are survey responses reported by Viasat, not a universal measure of passenger behavior. See Viasat’s 2024 survey announcement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Viasat’s separate survey findings also point to varied expectations: 87% of respondents said they would watch advertisements to gain free in-flight Wi-Fi, 71% were interested in access to their own streaming platforms, and 36% counted free or low-cost access among important Wi-Fi considerations. These figures reflect respondent answers in Viasat’s 2024 research announcement, not observed behavior on all flights. Viasat’s published survey findings.

Can you buy equipment to get a specific airline’s Wi-Fi?

No passenger device purchase is identified as a way to enable access to a particular airline’s onboard Wi-Fi. The Starlink and OneWeb-connected systems discussed here involve equipment installed on aircraft. Airline Wi-Fi availability and access are determined by the carrier’s onboard system and eligibility rules, not by bringing a consumer router or satellite dish.
