Airfares can rise while airline stocks fall because the fare is revenue, not profit. Fuel, labor, aircraft ownership and maintenance, capacity constraints, and disruption costs can increase faster than the money carriers retain from each ticket. That is the pattern visible in 2026 data: the average U.S. domestic fare reached a record first-quarter level in the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) series, yet U.S. airlines lost money, while the global industry is forecast to earn only a thin margin.

Higher fares have not translated into strong airline profits

The clearest contrast is between what passengers paid and what carriers kept. BTS and industry figures show that expensive tickets can coexist with weak margins and volatile share prices.

Measure Latest reported result What it shows
Average U.S. domestic airfare, Q1 2026 $428, up 4.7% from Q4 2025 after inflation adjustment; the unadjusted figure was the highest first-quarter fare in the BTS series Passenger pricing increased, but this is a fare measure rather than a profit measure
U.S. airline net result, Q1 2026 $1.0 billion after-tax loss; systemwide net margin of -1.5% Revenue growth did not cover the period’s operating and financing costs
U.S. airline net result, Q2 2026 $16 million systemwide net income The sector was close to break-even even after fares remained elevated
Global industry forecast, 2026 $23.0 billion net profit on $1.165 trillion revenue, a 2.0% net margin A very large industry can still produce only a small return on sales

The $428 BTS fare includes required ticket charges and outside taxes, but excludes optional baggage, seat upgrades and assigned-seat fees. A traveler’s final checkout total can therefore exceed the headline fare, while the airline’s profit still depends on the much narrower spread between all revenue and all costs.

Fuel is absorbing more of every dollar

Jet fuel is the most immediate reason fares and airline earnings are moving in different directions. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) forecasts an average 2026 jet-fuel price of $152 per barrel, compared with $90 in 2025. It expects industry fuel costs to reach $350 billion, nearly 40% higher, and to represent 31.4% of operating expenses rather than 25.4% the year before.

Carriers can pass part of that shock through ticket prices, baggage charges and seat fees, but pricing usually adjusts with a delay and competition limits how much can be passed through. Airlines therefore absorb part of the increase in their margins. IATA Director General Willie Walsh described the effect this way: “Airlines are bearing the brunt of the fuel price shock. While air fares are rising, airlines are still absorbing part of the hike in their bottom lines. Net profit per passenger is expected to fall to $4.50, half of what it was last year.”

What fuel hedging changes

Fuel sensitivity differs by carrier. A company that has hedged a portion of its consumption may be temporarily protected from a spot-price jump, while an unhedged carrier feels the increase faster. Hedging can also work in reverse if prices fall: protection purchased at a higher price can leave a carrier paying more than the market for part of its fuel. Investors therefore need each airline’s latest filing for hedge coverage, contract terms and expected fuel prices rather than assuming that all carriers face the same exposure.

Aircraft shortages keep capacity and ownership costs high

Aircraft deliveries remain below pre-pandemic peaks, according to IATA. Fewer new aircraft means airlines cannot expand schedules as freely, and older aircraft stay in service longer. That combination raises lease rates, maintenance expense and the risk that a mechanical issue removes an aircraft from the schedule.

Limited capacity can support higher fares, but it does not automatically create a healthy stock market. A carrier may be unable to add profitable flights, may pay more for scarce aircraft and parts, or may cancel and reaccommodate passengers when equipment is unavailable. Those disruption costs consume revenue that appears positive at the ticket counter.

Southwest illustrates the operational response

Southwest reported a Q2 2026 fuel cost of $3.92 per gallon and an $889 million year-over-year increase in fuel expense. It also reduced expected 2026 capacity growth to about 1.5%, down from 2%. Slower growth can protect schedules and limit exposure to expensive fuel, but it also caps the number of seats a carrier can sell. The decision shows why a fare increase does not necessarily signal that management can grow earnings quickly.

Revenue is shifting toward fees, but fees are not pure profit

BTS reported that fares made up 73.9% of U.S. airline operating revenue in Q2 2026, while baggage fees contributed 2.8%. Globally, IATA expects passenger ticket revenue of $839 billion in 2026, up 9.2%, and ancillary revenue—including services such as baggage and seat selection—of $165 billion, up 12.6%.

Ancillary revenue is growing faster because airlines are unbundling services and charging for choices that were once included. Those charges can improve revenue per passenger, but they still require payment processing, airport handling, customer service and compliance with consumer rules. They also cannot fully offset a fuel or maintenance shock on their own.

Passenger demand is growing more slowly than ticket revenue

IATA expects passenger demand to increase 2.1% in 2026 while passenger ticket revenue grows 9.2%. The gap indicates that higher yields and pricing, rather than an equivalent increase in passenger volume, are driving much of the revenue growth. That helps explain the sticker shock at booking screens, but it also creates a limit: if prices rise faster than household budgets, discretionary trips can be postponed and corporate travel can be scrutinized more closely.

Why airline stocks react faster than fares

Share prices reflect expected future cash flow, not just the fare paid on a flight that has already departed. Investors mark down stocks when they expect costs, capacity decisions or guidance to weaken future earnings, even if current fares remain high.

Comparison factor Questions to check in the latest filing Why it matters for volatility
Fuel exposure and hedging How much fuel is hedged, at what prices and for which periods? Determines how quickly an oil-price move reaches expenses
Labor-cost trajectory Are wage rates, staffing levels or overtime costs rising? Labor is a large, relatively fixed cost that fares may not immediately cover
Domestic versus international mix Which markets supply revenue, and how exposed are they to currency, geopolitical or seasonal changes? Different networks experience different demand and pricing cycles
Capacity growth Is management adding seats, holding capacity flat or cutting schedules? More seats can dilute fares; fewer seats can protect pricing but restrict growth
Load factor and yield Are planes fuller, and is revenue per passenger rising because of price or volume? Separates genuine demand strength from temporary fare increases
Ancillary-revenue strategy How much comes from bags, seat selection and other optional services? Shows pricing power, but also the cost and customer response to unbundling
Aircraft deliveries and maintenance Are delayed deliveries, engine inspections or parts shortages changing the schedule? Fleet interruptions can create cancellations and expensive substitutions
Liquidity and guidance How much cash is available, and has management changed its forecast? Balance-sheet strength determines how long a carrier can absorb weak margins

Because quarterly results and guidance are volatile, these comparisons should be made from the most recent company filings. They describe risk and operating exposure, not a buy-or-sell conclusion.

Read the BTS airfare number correctly

BTS changed its ticket sample to 40% (OD40) beginning July 1, 2025. Fares before the third quarter of 2025 used the previous 10% sample. The agency’s airline financial data come from carrier filings and can be revised. Long-term charts that cross the sampling change need caution, and the reported fare should not be treated as an all-in trip price because optional services are excluded.

What the 2026 data mean for travelers and investors

For travelers, a higher advertised fare is a warning to compare the complete itinerary cost, including bags and seat selection, rather than assuming the base ticket tells the whole story. For investors, the central question is whether a carrier can retain enough of each additional dollar of revenue after fuel, labor, fleet and disruption costs. In 2026, the evidence points to higher pricing but exceptionally thin profitability: expensive tickets are real, yet they do not guarantee healthy airline earnings or stable airline stocks.
