Researchers have demonstrated an air monitor that detects a SARS-CoV-2 target in sampled air and reports results at five-minute intervals. It is a proof-of-concept research system—not evidence that a general-purpose or retail air-quality monitor can identify viruses, or that a detected signal says whether a room is safe.
How an air monitor detects airborne virus particles in real time
The phrase “air monitor detects airborne virus particles in real time” refers to a sampler drawing air into a pathogen-specific sensing system. In the 2023 Nature Communications study, the pathogen Air Quality (pAQ) monitor combines a high-flow wet-wall cyclone sampler with a nanobody-based micro-immunoelectrode biosensor designed to detect SARS-CoV-2 aerosols. The paper reports five-minute time resolution: the system produces an environmental signal on that timescale, rather than waiting for a conventional laboratory result from a separately collected sample.
This is not a generic counter that recognizes any virus. The sensor is built to respond to a selected target, and its result concerns sampled air—not a person’s infection status or individual exposure dose.
What the published performance figures do—and do not—show
In laboratory experiments, the pAQ study reports 77–83% sensitivity and a limit of detection of 7–35 viral RNA copies per cubic metre of air. These are results for that research system under the study’s test conditions, not universal specifications, guarantees for every room, or evidence of a consumer-ready product. The authors describe the monitor as a proof-of-concept and discuss potential point-of-need surveillance. Read the 2023 study in Nature Communications.

A detected viral RNA target is an environmental surveillance signal. It does not by itself establish that intact infectious virus is present, quantify how much infectious material someone inhaled, or diagnose an infection. Interpretation depends on what the sensor detects and how that signal has been validated.
Direct sensing is different from collecting air for a test
Air surveillance can also mean collecting an air sample and analyzing it afterward. A June 23, 2026 medRxiv preprint describes a workflow pairing a Thermo Fisher AerosolSense air sampler with a Cepheid GeneXpert respiratory-virus assay. That is sample collection followed by molecular testing, not instantaneous direct sensing by the sampler. It is a preprint, and its workflow should not be treated as validation of the pAQ monitor. A 2022 paper also describes electrochemical sensing for continuous indoor SARS-CoV-2 monitoring and real-time alerts. Its existence is evidence of another research approach, not proof that ordinary particle monitors identify pathogens or that a general retail product is available. Read the 2022 paper in Sensors.

- CO₂ monitors measure carbon dioxide, which can help assess ventilation conditions; they do not identify viruses.
- Optical particle monitors estimate particle levels or size ranges; without a validated pathogen-specific sensing system, they cannot identify a virus.
- HEPA air cleaners filter particles from air; they do not detect pathogens or report whether a virus is present.
In a 2021 CDC simulated-room experiment, portable HEPA cleaners reduced exposure to simulated exhaled aerosols in that experimental setup. That supports a filtration finding under those conditions, not a claim that a cleaner detects viruses. See the CDC study.

Why finding viral material is not the same as finding infectious virus
Detection depends on the target and the validation method. A sensor or molecular assay may indicate viral genetic material without proving that the material can infect someone. In a separate 2020 aerosol-suspension study, researchers reported retained infectivity and virion integrity for up to 16 hours in respirable-sized aerosols. The authors said the experiment was performed once across several laboratories, so this finding should be read in that specific experimental context—not as a typical indoor-room survival time. Even a valid environmental detection does not establish who was exposed, how much they inhaled, or whether they will become ill. Those questions require information beyond a room-level signal.

Is there a consumer air monitor that directly detects airborne viruses?
The cited studies establish research systems and sample-and-test methods, not a verified retail product that performs the title’s direct, real-time pathogen-detection function. The pAQ paper does not establish retail availability, regulatory clearance, price, warranty, or suitability for deciding that a room is safe. A CO₂ monitor, particle counter, or HEPA purifier is not an equivalent substitute because each measures or does a different thing.

For practical indoor-air management, use devices according to their actual function: a CO₂ monitor can inform ventilation decisions, a particle monitor can track particle levels, and filtration can reduce airborne particles. None should be interpreted as a virus detector unless it uses a validated pathogen-specific sensing system.
