There is no single monitor here that measures every pollutant both indoors and outdoors. These five options include paired indoor/outdoor systems, indoor monitors that compare readings with outdoor data, and a dedicated outdoor particle monitor. Choose according to what you want to measure and where you need a sensor—not by the number of features alone.

How to choose an indoor and outdoor air quality monitor

First decide which readings matter to you. PM2.5 is fine particulate matter; CO2, radon, and VOC readings refer to different gases or sensor outputs, while temperature and humidity describe environmental conditions. A device measures only what its sensors are designed to detect. A consumer monitor is not a complete measure of air safety or a substitute for regulatory monitoring.

“Indoor/outdoor” can describe two very different setups: physical sensors placed in both locations, or an indoor device whose app displays outdoor data from another source. Check which one a product provides before buying. Also confirm that any outdoor unit is designed for exposure to weather; indoor monitors should not be installed outside.

The EPA cautions that “The cost of a monitor does not necessarily indicate how well it will perform.” It also notes limited information about some low-cost monitors’ performance indoors and a lack of widely accepted indoor performance criteria for most of them. The specifications below are manufacturer claims, not results from independent head-to-head testing. EPA guidance on air sensor performance explains why readings can vary with placement, temperature, humidity, time in use, data processing, and contaminant mixtures.

Five monitors and systems, matched to different needs

This is a use-case guide, not a measured performance ranking. The order distinguishes the kind of indoor/outdoor coverage each option offers.

1. IQAir AirVisual Indoor & Outdoor Monitor Bundle: a paired comparison system

IQAir describes this bundle as two sensors that report simultaneously to the AirVisual app, allowing indoor and outdoor comparison. Its outdoor sensor is described as weatherproof. This is the clearest fit among these options if you want physical sensors in both locations rather than an indoor reading paired with app-supplied outdoor information.

The bundle page does not establish current bundle composition or exact product naming in enough detail to treat either as settled. Confirm what is included and how the sensors connect on the live product page before purchasing. IQAir AirVisual Indoor & Outdoor Monitor Bundle.

2. AirGradient ONE + Open Air: separate indoor and weatherproof outdoor monitors

AirGradient describes ONE as an indoor monitor for PM2.5, CO2, TVOCs, NOx, temperature, and humidity. Open Air is a separate outdoor monitor in a weatherproof enclosure; it can be mounted on a wall or pole and is described as covering the same categories. AirGradient recommends pairing indoor monitoring with an outdoor monitor and describes dashboard comparisons.

These are two devices, not one monitor or a stated bundle with a combined price. Check the installation and connection requirements for each unit. AirGradient ONE and AirGradient Open Air.

3. PurpleAir Classic Plus: outdoor PM2.5 monitoring

PurpleAir describes the Classic Plus as an outdoor monitor for PM2.5. It sends Wi-Fi data to the PurpleAir real-time map. It is a focused option for outdoor particle readings, not a multi-pollutant indoor monitor or a paired indoor/outdoor system.

Airthings’ View-series specifications, dated April 13, 2026, state a CO2 range of 400–5,000 ppm and a PM2.5 range of 0–200 μg/m³, with stated error varying by range. These are manufacturer specifications, not an independent comparison of accuracy. Airthings View Plus and Airthings View-series technical specifications.

5. IQAir AirVisual Pro: indoor readings with app-based outdoor comparison

AirVisual Pro is an indoor monitor for PM2.5, CO2, temperature, TVOC, and humidity, with an on-device display and an app. IQAir describes outdoor comparisons in the app, but the monitor itself is not a physical outdoor sensor. IQAir lists its weatherproofing as “No,” so it should remain indoors.

What the readings can—and cannot—tell you

Do not treat a monitor’s display or alert as an emergency warning, a diagnosis, or a regulatory measurement. The EPA says low-cost monitors detect only the pollutants or environmental factors they are designed for, and their data are not equivalent to data from the EPA’s outdoor regulatory monitoring network. A low reading for one pollutant does not establish that all other pollutants are absent.

Read the product specifications for the sensor types, ranges, and stated limitations relevant to your needs. In particular, a VOC index or reading should not be mistaken for a direct measurement of every volatile compound. Indoor accuracy and precision can be uncertain, and conditions such as humidity, temperature, placement, and mixtures of contaminants can affect readings. See the EPA’s consumer guidance on low-cost monitors.

Place and set up the monitor carefully

For indoor placement, EPA guidance recommends a location near typical breathing-zone height—about 3–6 feet—with airflow around the device. Keep it away from pollutant sources or sinks such as toasters and air cleaners, and avoid corners, obstructed spots, and locations immediately beside windows, doors, or HVAC ducts. Follow the specific product manual if its placement instructions differ.

  • Check whether the unit is intended for indoor use, outdoor use, or both before choosing a location.
  • Keep a device intended for indoors out of the weather. AirVisual Pro is not weatherproof, and Airthings says View Plus should never be placed outdoors; AirGradient describes Open Air as weatherproof.
  • For a two-location comparison, use the product’s specified app or dashboard workflow and make sure the indoor and outdoor sensors are reporting as intended.

EPA’s air sensor placement guidance gives additional advice on location and airflow.

Which option fits your situation?

  • You need physical readings from both locations: consider the IQAir bundle or AirGradient ONE with the separate Open Air unit, and confirm the live product details and setup requirements.
  • You want outdoor PM2.5 data: PurpleAir Classic Plus is the outdoor-focused choice described here.
  • You want indoor readings that include radon: Airthings View Plus lists radon alongside PM2.5, CO2, VOCs, humidity, temperature, and pressure.
  • You want an indoor display and app-based outdoor comparison: AirVisual Pro offers that comparison, but it does not physically measure outdoor air.
