There is no single device that fixes every indoor-air problem. The most reliable home strategy is to control pollution at its source, ventilate with clean outdoor air when conditions allow, and add filtration when particles are present or outdoor air is unhealthy. A portable purifier protects the room where it operates; a compatible central HVAC filter can clean air that passes through the system. During wildfire smoke or other outdoor pollution events, closing windows, filtering indoor air, and ventilating only during cleaner periods is usually safer than bringing polluted air inside.

The right choice depends on the pollutant, room size, HVAC compatibility, outdoor conditions, and how consistently equipment is operated and maintained.

What works best at home?

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency summarizes the priority order this way: “The most effective ways to improve your indoor air are to reduce or remove the sources of pollutants and to ventilate with clean outdoor air.” (EPA Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home). Filtration is a useful supplement, not a replacement for those steps.

In practice, combine measures rather than treating “air purifier” and “outdoor-air solution” as competing products:

  • Ventilate with clean air: open windows or use outdoor-air ventilation when local conditions are good enough and weather, temperature, and humidity make it practical.
  • Filter particles: use a correctly sized portable cleaner or the highest-efficiency HVAC filter the system can safely handle.
  • Adapt to outdoor pollution: when smoke or another outdoor pollutant is present, reduce outdoor-air entry, close windows and doors when safe, and operate filtration in occupied rooms.

EPA estimates that people spend about 90% of their time indoors. That is a context-setting estimate from its second-edition consumer guide, not a precise value for every person or household, but it explains why indoor decisions matter even when the pollution originates outdoors.

No air cleaner removes every pollutant. Particle filters are useful for smoke, dust, pollen, and other suspended particles; gases and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) require different media and source-control measures.

Choose by pollutant and outdoor conditions

Measure Best use What to verify Limits and trade-offs
Portable air cleaner One room or a defined area, especially where people spend time or during smoke episodes Smoke CADR matched to the room; particle-filter type; ozone emissions; noise; replacement-filter availability Does not automatically clean the entire home. Higher fan speeds and longer operation filter more air but increase noise and energy use.
Central HVAC filter Air moving through a forced-air heating or cooling system; potentially broader coverage MERV 13 or the highest rating the system can accommodate; correct fit and sealing; adequate system runtime Works only while the system fan is operating. A restrictive filter may be unsuitable for some equipment and can affect airflow or performance.
Source control and ventilation Reducing emissions and diluting indoor pollutants when outdoor air is clean Indoor activities and sources; current outdoor-air conditions; weather and humidity Opening windows can worsen indoor air during smoke or other outdoor pollution and may conflict with cooling needs.
DIY box-fan cleaner Lower-cost particle filtration when commercial units are unavailable or unaffordable Fan and filter design, construction quality, electrical safety, airflow, and maintenance CADR is often unknown, so room sizing is less certain. Performance varies substantially by design.
Air-quality report or sensor Deciding whether outdoor ventilation is sensible and tracking conditions Use local official reports and interpret sensor readings in context It informs a decision but does not clean air and is not a substitute for filtration or official health guidance.

How to size a portable air purifier

Use smoke CADR for particle protection

Clean air delivery rate (CADR) describes how quickly a cleaner removes particles from air. For wildfire smoke, EPA advises choosing a portable cleaner with a smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the room area in square feet. A 300-square-foot room therefore calls for a smoke CADR of at least 200 cubic feet per minute (cfm): 300 × 2/3 = 200.

EPA’s general consumer sizing table gives 195 cfm for a 300-square-foot room with an 8-foot ceiling. Those figures come from different guidance contexts, so they should not be treated as contradictory. If you are preparing specifically for wildfire smoke, round the two-thirds calculation upward and choose a unit with at least 200 cfm smoke CADR. The general table assumes an 8-foot ceiling; a taller room contains more air and needs more capacity.

Account for open plans and high ceilings

Measure the entire connected area that the cleaner is expected to serve, not just the section directly beside the sofa. An open kitchen, living room, and dining area may function as one air volume. A loft, vaulted ceiling, or room with open stairways also has a larger effective volume than its floor area suggests.

If one available unit cannot meet the calculated CADR, use a larger unit or multiple units. Place them in occupied rooms or in the cleaner-air room used during smoke events. A small device beside a bed can be useful for that immediate zone, but it should not be described as treating a whole floor.

Check what the rating actually measures

  • Smoke CADR: the most relevant particle rating for wildfire smoke and fine particulate matter (PM2.5).
  • Dust or pollen CADR: useful for those particle categories, but do not substitute a different rating without checking the manufacturer’s test information.
  • Gas removal: not established by CADR. A particle-focused HEPA filter can reduce particles while leaving gases and odors largely unchanged.

EPA’s consumer guidance uses CADR as a particle measure. There is no broadly used, standardized performance-rating system for gas removal in portable cleaners, so evaluate gas claims more cautiously.

Place and operate the unit for real-world airflow

  1. Put the cleaner in the room where people spend the most time, or in the designated cleaner-air room during a smoke event.
  2. Keep the air intake and outlet clear of walls, curtains, furniture, and clutter according to the manufacturer’s spacing instructions.
  3. Run it at a higher speed when smoke or particle levels are elevated. A lower setting is quieter but moves less air.
  4. Operate it for longer periods when greater removal is needed; intermittent use leaves more time for particles to accumulate.
  5. Replace a dirty or overloaded filter as directed. A clogged filter can reduce airflow even if the fan still sounds normal.

These operating choices involve a practical trade-off: more airflow generally means more filtration, but also more noise and electricity use.

Should you use a MERV 13 HVAC filter?

Start with compatibility, not the rating number

EPA recommends MERV 13, or the highest-efficiency filter that the heating and cooling system can accommodate. Do not force a thicker filter into a slot, bend the frame to make it fit, or assume that every furnace, air handler, or heat-pump system can use MERV 13.

Check the equipment manual, the filter compartment label, or the manufacturer’s specifications. If the permitted rating is unclear, ask an HVAC technician. A filter that does not seal correctly allows air to bypass the media; one that is too restrictive can reduce airflow and affect system operation.

Understand when central filtration is active

An HVAC filter cleans only the air that passes through the system. If the fan is off, filtration is off. Running the fan more often can increase the amount of filtered air, but EPA notes that this may raise electricity use and can create humidity-control trade-offs. Continuous fan operation is not automatically the best choice in every climate or system.

Replace the filter on the schedule appropriate for its loading and the equipment instructions. Smoke, construction dust, shedding pets, and other high-particle conditions can load a filter faster than a normal household schedule.

Portable purifier or central filter: which should you choose?

Choose a portable unit when room-level control matters

A portable cleaner is usually the more direct option when you need protection in one bedroom, office, nursery, or other occupied room; when the home has no forced-air system; or when you need a dedicated smoke response. Its performance can be matched to a room using a published smoke CADR, and it can continue operating even when the central system is off.

Choose central filtration for distributed coverage

A compatible HVAC filter can reach multiple rooms over time as the system circulates air. Coverage depends on duct layout, fan runtime, return-air placement, and whether room doors remain closed. It is not equivalent to placing a correctly sized purifier in every room.

Use both when the situation warrants it

During a smoke event, a central filter can handle air circulated through the system while a portable unit provides stronger cleaning in the room where occupants shelter. The combination still requires closed windows and doors when outdoor conditions are poor, plus source control inside the home.

When outdoor air is clean, ventilation can be the better first move

Ventilation dilutes indoor pollutants by replacing indoor air with outdoor air. It is useful after cooking, cleaning, painting, or other activities that release pollutants, provided outdoor air is cleaner than indoor air and weather conditions are acceptable.

Check conditions before opening windows

Use local official air-quality reports and, if available, a properly interpreted indoor or outdoor sensor. A monitor is a decision aid, not proof that a room is safe and not a substitute for health guidance. Consider smoke, ozone, traffic pollution, dust, pollen, temperature, humidity, and whether opening windows would make the home dangerously hot or cold.

Ventilate during cleaner periods

During a changing smoke event, outdoor conditions may improve temporarily. Air out the home when conditions are better, then close windows and doors again when smoke rises. EPA’s wildfire guidance on indoor filtration is available at Indoor Air Filtration.

What to do during wildfire smoke or other outdoor pollution

Create a cleaner-air room

Select a room that can be closed off from the rest of the home, has few windows and doors, and is large enough for the household members who may use it. Run a properly sized portable cleaner there, keep doors and windows closed when safe, and avoid activities that create particles, such as frying, smoking, burning candles, or using aerosol sprays.

EPA’s instructions for setting up this space are in How to Create a Cleaner Air Room at Home. A portable cleaner treats the room or area around it; it does not guarantee that every room in the house has the same air quality.

Balance smoke protection and heat

Closing windows can make a home hot, particularly during a summer wildfire. EPA advises reducing smoke exposure while keeping the home cool. If occupants cannot stay cool indoors with windows closed and cannot tolerate the smoke, its guidance says to seek shelter elsewhere rather than treating an overheated, polluted home as safe.

Do not run a whole-house fresh-air intake or ventilation mode that deliberately brings in smoky air unless the system and current conditions have been evaluated. Ask an HVAC professional about safe settings for your equipment.

Keep doors and windows closed at the right time

EPA’s wildfire recommendations in Reduce Your Smoke Exposure and Wildfires and Indoor Air Quality emphasize limiting smoke entry. Close openings before smoke becomes heavy, run filtration continuously or at a high setting during the worst period, and ventilate only after outdoor air improves.

Particle pollution versus gases and VOCs

What particle filters can do

HEPA-style and other high-efficiency particle filters can remove suspended particles, including much of the fine particulate matter in smoke, when enough air passes through the filter. CADR helps compare that particle-cleaning rate for a room.

Why gas removal needs different media

Smoke and household products can also contain gases and VOCs. A particle filter alone does not establish removal of those pollutants. EPA advises looking for activated carbon or another absorbent medium designed for gas removal, while noting that gas-focused performance ratings are not widely standardized.

Source control is often more dependable for gases: stop using the emitting product, store chemicals outside living areas when appropriate, and ventilate with clean outdoor air after the activity. Avoid assuming that a thin carbon layer will provide unlimited capacity; gas media can become saturated, and published test conditions may not represent your room.

Are ozone-generating cleaners safe?

Do not select a device merely because it produces ozone or advertises ozone as a cleaning mechanism. EPA’s wildfire guidance says to use air cleaners certified by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) because they produce little or no ozone. EPA does not certify or endorse individual purifier brands or models.

Check the actual ozone-emissions information for the model and avoid operating an intentional ozone generator in an occupied home. Ozone is itself an air pollutant and is not a substitute for particle filtration or source control.

Can a DIY box-fan cleaner work?

EPA considers a well-built DIY air cleaner a possible effective, lower-cost option when commercial portable cleaners are unavailable or unaffordable. In one EPA summary of a study led by May, a DIY cleaner reduced PM2.5 by about 56% after 90 minutes in a larger room and about 99% within 60 minutes in a smaller room during one wildfire smoke event. Those are results from particular rooms and one event, not a universal performance promise.

Design determines performance. Filter area, fan strength, sealing, airflow resistance, and the way the filter is attached all matter. Commercial units with a known CADR are generally easier to size and compare.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Safety checks for a DIY unit

  • Use a sound fan with an intact power cord and stable base.
  • Attach filters so air cannot simply flow around their edges.
  • Keep the intake and exhaust unobstructed.
  • Inspect for dust loading and replace filters when airflow falls or the media is visibly dirty.
  • Keep the assembly away from water, heaters, curtains, and walkways where it could tip.

Because CADR may be unknown, use a DIY unit as a supplemental cleaner or in a clearly defined room rather than claiming whole-home coverage.

Maintenance and troubleshooting

The purifier is running but the room still smells smoky

  • Confirm that the unit has a smoke CADR appropriate for the room, not merely a small “desktop” rating.
  • Increase fan speed and run time.
  • Check that windows, exterior doors, and fresh-air intakes are not bringing in smoke.
  • Inspect the filter for loading and verify that it is installed in the correct orientation.
  • Remember that a particle filter may reduce PM2.5 without removing gas odors; activated carbon or source control may be needed for the smell itself.

The HVAC system is noisy or airflow is weak after a filter change

Turn off the system if operation appears abnormal and verify the filter size, orientation, and fit. Consult the equipment documentation or a qualified technician before using a higher-MERV filter. Do not operate with a filter that is too thick or visibly collapsing.

Indoor air worsens when windows are open

Close the openings and check outdoor conditions. Smoke, ozone, traffic pollution, dust, and pollen can make outdoor air less suitable for ventilation. Reopen windows only when official reports or reliable local information indicate that outdoor air is cleaner than the indoor air you are trying to dilute.

Filters need replacement unusually often

Frequent loading can be expected during wildfire smoke, renovation, heavy dust, or other high-particle periods. Follow the equipment instructions, inspect filters rather than relying only on a calendar reminder, and address the source if one activity is generating persistent dust or fumes.

A practical decision guide

  1. Identify the pollutant. Is the concern particles such as smoke and dust, gases and VOCs, biological growth, or a mixture? Choose controls that match it.
  2. Check outdoor air. If outdoor air is cleaner, ventilate. If it is smoky or otherwise polluted, limit outdoor-air entry and use filtration.
  3. Control indoor sources. Stop smoking, contain dust, use exhaust ventilation appropriately, and remove or isolate emitting products.
  4. Calculate the space. Measure the room or connected open area, account for high ceilings, and select a portable unit by smoke CADR. For wildfire smoke, target at least two-thirds of the floor area in cfm.
  5. Evaluate HVAC compatibility. Use MERV 13 only if the system can accommodate it; otherwise choose the highest compatible rating.
  6. Set up the equipment. Place portable units near occupants, keep airflow clear, and run them longer or faster when particle levels rise.
  7. Maintain and reassess. Replace loaded filters, watch for changes in outdoor conditions, and adjust ventilation and fan operation accordingly.
