Choose a microwave for fast reheating, drinks, soups, and other moist foods. Choose an air fryer when you want a browned, crisp exterior. They solve different cooking problems, so the right choice depends on what you make most often—not on a universal winner.
How do air fryers and microwaves cook?
A microwave uses microwave energy that food absorbs and converts into heat. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) explains that microwaves do not cook food “from the inside out”: in thick foods, the outer layers are heated primarily by microwaves, while heat moves into the center mainly by conduction. Foods with more water can heat or cook more quickly. FDA: Microwave oven radiation
An air fryer circulates hot air to cook food and promote browning. Whirlpool describes both air fryers and convection microwaves as circulating hot air, but says they are designed for different outcomes: air fryers for crisping, microwaves for quick cooking and reheating. That is category guidance from an appliance maker, not a controlled comparison of specific models. Whirlpool: Air fryer vs. convection oven

| Your usual task | Better category fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Reheating leftovers quickly | Microwave | Designed for quick reheating; works particularly well for moist foods. |
| Heating soup, drinks, or other liquids | Microwave | Microwave energy heats food directly, and high-water-content foods can heat quickly. |
| Making food crisp or browned | Air fryer | Circulating hot air is suited to crisping and browning the exterior. |
| Choosing for a specific recipe or portion | Check the appliance and its manual | Performance depends on the food, batch size, and model; category guidance cannot establish an exact cooking time. |
If you regularly need both fast reheating and crisping, the appliances may complement rather than replace one another. Combination appliances exist, but whether a particular one can do both jobs well depends on its features and capacity; check the product listing and manual before treating it as a substitute for two appliances.

Can an air fryer warm food like a microwave?
An air fryer can warm food, but it does not offer the same quick, moist-food reheating role as a microwave. Its hot-air cooking approach is useful when a crisp finish matters. For leftovers, choose according to the result you want: a microwave for quick heating, or an air fryer when restoring a crisp exterior is more important. The available category guidance does not establish a universal timing comparison for matched foods or models.
What else should you compare before buying?
- Your common foods: List the meals and leftovers you prepare most. Crispness points toward an air fryer; soups, drinks, and quick reheating point toward a microwave.
- Batch size and capacity: A model’s usable capacity affects how much food it can handle at once. Check the product listing and manual for the specific model.
- Counter space: Compare the listed dimensions with the space available in your kitchen.
- Cleanup and accessories: Review what parts need cleaning and which accessories are included. Do not assume cookware or accessories are compatible without checking their labels and the appliance manual.
- Controls and price: These are model-specific, so compare current listings rather than relying on category-level assumptions.
Which appliance uses less energy?
The available evidence does not establish that a microwave or air fryer always uses less energy for active cooking. Electricity use for a particular task depends on the appliance, food, portion, and cooking time, and there is no cited standardized active-cooking comparison between the two categories.

The FDA says microwave cooking can be more energy-efficient than conventional cooking because food cooks faster and energy heats the food rather than a whole oven compartment. That comparison is with conventional cooking, not with an air fryer. FDA: Microwave oven radiation
The U.S. Department of Energy’s microwave standards page describes energy-conservation rules and a test procedure for standby and off-mode energy; it does not provide a standardized active-cooking efficiency comparison with air fryers. In a 2013 estimate, DOE said a typical microwave was used for about 70 hours of food heating per year, with 8,690 remaining hours of standby electricity use. These are historical figures for microwave use, not current measurements for every model and not an air-fryer comparison. DOE also projected that microwave standards then adopted would avoid 38 million metric tons of carbon emissions and yield $3.4 billion in net present value consumer savings for microwaves purchased through 2045. Those were projections, not realized results or a comparison with air fryers. U.S. Department of Energy: 2013 microwave standards announcement
How to use a microwave safely and heat food evenly
- Follow the appliance manual and use cookware labeled microwave-safe.
- Do not use a microwave if its door is bent, warped, damaged, or does not close firmly. Stop using it if it operates with the door open.
- Do not heat water beyond the time recommended in the manual; superheated water can erupt.
- For more even microwave cooking, cover, stir, and rotate food as appropriate, then allow standing time where recommended.
- Use a food thermometer for meat, poultry, seafood, and egg products. FDA: Food safety at home
The FDA says microwave ovens that meet its standard and are used according to the manufacturer’s instructions are safe based on current knowledge about microwave radiation. FDA: Microwave oven radiation
