Neither AI nor human writers are best at every kind of writing. The evidence points to a task-by-task answer: ChatGPT essays scored well on one student-essay rubric, readers felt less immersed in one experiment’s AI stories, and human-written business refusals were rated highest overall in an exploratory study. Those findings measure different things, so they do not add up to a universal ranking.

What the studies found, task by task

Writing task Evidence and result What the result does—and does not—show
Argumentative essays In a 2023 study, teachers scored essays by German high-school students from an online forum and essays generated by ChatGPT versions available at the time. The AI essays scored higher across the study’s content and language rubric. ChatGPT-4 also outscored the earlier version on measures including logical structure, language complexity, vocabulary richness and text linking. AI performed better on this sampled student-essay task and rubric. It is not a comparison with professional writers or every kind of essay. (Herbold et al., Scientific Reports, 30 October 2023.)
Short fiction In a 2025 experiment, 100 students and ChatGPT each produced 100 stories from similar prompts; 380 participants read stories from the resulting pool. Readers reported no difference in novelty or entertainment, but reported less narrative transportation—the feeling of being drawn into the story world—for AI-generated stories. The outcome is about short stories, prompts, writers and readers in this experiment, not fiction writing in general. (Appel et al., Humanities and Social Sciences Communications, 2025.)
Business refusal texts A 2025 exploratory comparison of ChatGPT, Gemini and human-written refusal texts found human writing rated highest overall. Gemini’s scores were not significantly different from human scores in that sample; ChatGPT scored lower. The researchers characterized AI texts in this genre as more formulaic and less nuanced. A non-significant difference does not establish that Gemini and human writing are equivalent. The study addresses refusal texts, not all business communication. (Wilson and Rose, Business and Professional Communication Quarterly, first published online 12 March 2025.)
AI-assisted creative work A 2024 experiment found that generative AI assistance enhanced individual creativity while reducing the collective diversity of novel content. One person’s result and the range of ideas across a group are different outcomes. The experiment used non-professional writers and GPT-4, so its measured effect should not be assumed for every workplace or current system. (Science Advances, 2024.)

Why “better writing” depends on what you measure

A rubric score, a reader’s emotional response and the variety of ideas produced by a group are not interchangeable measures. An essay can score highly for organization and language while a story can be judged by whether it draws a reader into an imagined world. A refusal message has a further job: it must deliver unwelcome news while managing tone and a relationship.

That is why the essay result does not cancel out the fiction or business findings. Each study used a different genre, prompt, group of writers or readers, and evaluation method. None supplies a common score that can rank AI and human writing across all genres.

What the evidence suggests about human and AI strengths

AI can produce rubric-friendly structure

The essay comparison shows that a tested ChatGPT version could produce argumentative essays that teachers scored above the sampled student-forum essays on the study’s criteria. This is meaningful evidence for that assignment type, but it does not establish that the model can replace expert reporting, subject-matter judgment or professional writing in other contexts.

Human nuance matters when a message affects a relationship

The refusal-text study points to a challenge beyond grammatical polish: choosing language and tone that fit the circumstances and preserve a working relationship. Its assessors considered tone, relationship, language, content and structure. That makes a refusal or other sensitive message a case where a writer’s knowledge of the recipient and situation can matter as much as a cleanly formed draft.

Reader response is not the same as textual novelty

In the story experiment, participants found AI- and student-written stories similarly novel and entertaining, yet reported a difference in transportation. A reader may enjoy or regard a story as new without feeling deeply absorbed by it. The study’s linguistic analysis also found fewer personal pronouns and fewer relativity descriptions, and more positive emotion language, in ChatGPT stories; these are observed features of that sample, not rules for every generated story.

Can readers tell AI writing from human writing?

In Wilson and Rose’s refusal-text study, human assessors identified AI-generated texts with 68.1% accuracy and human-written texts with 86% accuracy, according to the abstract. Those figures describe assessors’ performance on that study’s texts; they are not a general test for detecting AI writing. They also should not be read as a quality score: recognizing who wrote a text and judging whether it is good are separate tasks.

When to use AI, a human writer, or both

  • For a structured assignment: AI may help generate an outline or draft, but check the work against the actual rubric and verify its claims. The essay study supports a narrow conclusion about sampled student argumentative essays, not a blanket conclusion about accuracy or expertise.
  • For fiction: Treat AI as a possible source of ideas or draft material, then judge the work by the reader experience you want—not only by novelty or entertainment. The available experiment found a difference in immersion for its AI stories.
  • For sensitive business communication: A person who understands the recipient and the stakes should make the final decisions about tone, context and wording. The refusal-text findings suggest that formulaic phrasing can be a weakness in this genre.
  • For a collection of creative work: Consider both the quality of an individual contribution and the range across the whole set. The creativity experiment found those outcomes could move in opposite directions with AI assistance.

None of these studies establishes that AI writers are generally faster, that human writing is always more accurate, or how every AI writing tool available in October 2026 performs. They are evidence about particular systems and conditions, not a forecast for every writer, model or assignment.
